    First minute of the video, the guy was like "Yeah we are running out of fish because of over-fishing due to an increase of population", and the reporter is like "Thats why climate change affects these people." Climate change is a way people sum up problems and blame it on other people instead of doing the things that actually solve or manage a problem.
    Here are some potential problems that probably are the real f'n reasons.
    Overfishing=Not enough management of resources
    Not enough management of resources=Corrupt government pilfering away taxes meant to be used for things like resource management
    Corrupt government officials
    Yeah that sums it up.

      Well no there's already underlying issues in many of these poor nations from the good ol time of exploration where the West fucked over most em. Now there's climate change - something also driven by the richest countries, which exacerbates all of the issues which no one solved.
      The point here being yeah overfishing is a problem, its also a problem when the lake you fish in doesnt exist anymore.
      So now the dream of escaping poverty doesnt even exist for some of these places. Since they cant even produce the economic surplus to invest in the infrastructure required to reduce poverty.

    • @milesinnz
      @milesinnz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SarcasticDespot “from the good ol time”. Too many people on here have no idea of the longer term social and economic history and the movement of humans. They all assume that their history began a few hundred years ago at best. There have been more than 200 empires and most of those were before European countries had their own empires, and yes, some of those empires were in Africa. Do you even know that there were camel train of more than 10,000 crossing the Sahara with slaves to sell in North Africa when Britain's were running around in animal skins. Have you ever considered the spread of Islam across Africa ? Or even a place like India - how do you think it was formed ? Peacefully ? Did you know that the first slaves were White, so does this mean I can demand a home in Africa and be looked after for the rest of my life ? Did you know that there are Russian actively on the ground in African counties right now ? I think one is the Central African Republic ? So why no screams about this ? Because it does not fit the propaganda line which you have swallowed completely. There is half I book I could write - but those putting out the cheap propaganda can only manage a few lines, any more then it descends into obvious nonsense. The biggest problem in Africa right now is RELIGION, and that was imported so if African’s want to blame something, then they should blame this. “Allah will decide how many children you will have” and the Catholics are not any better.

    it's sad that people have to live this way, but more sad that the fishing industry over-fishes and steals from other areas, forcing locals to go broke, and hungry.

    • @Jason-sp5yc
      @Jason-sp5yc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I have a slightly different take - this is a classic example of "tragedy of the commons", and this type of phenomena is rampant everywhere that certain costs can be externalized and borne by someone else (climate change is another example). It's in every fishers best interest to get as many fish as possible, and hence there is no economic incentive to fish sustainably. I'm not so certain we don't end up the same place without a powerful fishing industry, seems like even at the small scale we could end up in the same place.

    • @Flawtistic
      @Flawtistic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Jason-sp5yc I like your nuance, but the concept they titled "tragedy of the commons" is really just double speak for the inherent flaw of current economics. A sound economic policy shouldn't rely on people acting a certain way no matter if it's greed or altruism. The only tragedy for these people is the failure of their government to support them. Nobody should have to sell their body, possibly getting pregnant in the process no less, for $8 per week. It's maddening.

    People used to catch large fish in this lake. In the recent past, this lake had some of the most diverse fish species in the world but many species are now extinct. The fish in this lake have been chronically over harvested leaving smaller and smaller breeding groups to repopulate. Like the fishermen said 30 seconds into the video, the ever growing population is why there are hardly any fish left. This has been an issue since before the recent effects of climate change exacerbated the problem.
    The title should say- humans are making it harder to escape poverty. I hope the abundance of fishermen at lake malawi seek a new source of income, you cant pump water out of a dry well.

      People started having an average of 1.5 children per family after they got educated and wealthy. It's an effect not a cause. Experts have found that the single best predictor of family size is woman's education.
      Many poor families have lots of children because children can help with household and farm tasks. Many children often die in infancy so having many is somewhat of an insurance policy. Lastly, access to contraceptive and reproductive health options is often fairly limited in poorer nations.

    • @UninstallingWindows
      @UninstallingWindows 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kellylinstra1135 It goes hand in hand. Fewer children is both the cause and effect. Having fewer children means/no children when you are a teen means that you can get an education yourself. Once you are stuck with 3 children at the age of 16....your education is done. Especially if you are alone with the children. This is true even in developed countries. Once you are a single mom with 3 kids...you are almost always set for a life close to the poverty line.
      Its basic logic really. If you can produce resources for 1 person and then add 3 extra people, then...you will have to divide that 1 resource between more people, meaning that everybody will get less than what you started with. Take the children of the women in this video. Are they gonna have an easier life and more opportunities compared to their mother( before she had children? ). Having children also means that it becomes much more difficult to move and find a new place to live.

When fish are your only option to feed yourself and your family, you're gonna keep fishing. What these people really need are more job opportunities, relying on a single lake is their downfall. If they had other options then the lake wouldn't be so depleted. When you are poor, facing hardship, having 5 to 6 kids is something humans instinctively do to make sure at least 2 to 3 live to be healthy adults. It's deep human nature. Having only 2 to 3 kids is a luxury reserved for people with wealth or in wealthy parts of the world who deep down expect all of their children to live to be healthy adults. Some species always have a lot of offspring as their evolutionary survival trait while humans are adaptive and tend to have a lot of kids when it's unlikely all of them will survive to be adults healthy enough to bare another generation. This is basic human instinct and the reason our species has managed to avoid extinction, historically thrive in any environment, and spread to all corners of the earth.

      It's not the cause, dude literally we've sold that idea to china and its actually making problem for men there to find partners, because the man to woman ratio now is super high every 10 men theres only 1 women there. And another example is India where having more children actually better for them because they are still agriculture based too, more hand more labor to farm with too. I'm highly recommend u and another 7 ppl that liked your comment to search it, its something actually unicef highly supported and backfired badly (india forced sterilization, one child policy)

    • @RazorSkinned86
      @RazorSkinned86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheDexsword yup. especially since based on per-capita numbers it's the humans living in the so-called developed world (US, western Europeans) that produce a vast majority of the worlds pollution and atmospheric carbon. The whole "the global south, ie brown, yellow, black people, are having too many kids and overpopulating" is a myth spread by wealthy Americans from Rockefeller to Bill Gates and deeply rooted in white-supremacist eugenics pseudoscience. So if you don't live in one of those 1st world nations that are by-far the per-capita biggest polluters and consumers, don't feel guilty about having kids because your lifestyle is actually sustainable even with double the population but if you live in one of those developed western nations where over-consumption and wastefully exploiting the environment treated like a virtue, then think about not having kids or having less kids at least until your western cultures learn to live sustainable lifestyles like the rest of the world.

    Industry means more jobs, cheaper product, cleaner water, more warmth, more productivity with less labour. Fossil fuels must be used for these things.

      Why don’t you help do something then? This is because of the pair trawlers owned by big shots.... Vice didn’t give the full story. Don’t sit in Malawi and complain ....do something

    « Climate change » .... Couldn’t it be the result of over-fishing the same areas by thousands of people for all these years...?

    Climate change does have a part of provety. But the blame is squarely on the governments who won't help poor people better their lives!

    The problem is most likely in overfishing unfortunately. Climate change is a lesser problem in this case :( They are going to find some new income revenue soon, when the lake has no fish at all

    This is why NO MATTER THE COST climate change must be stopped. The GDP future impact will be massive, and we can fund at least US green energy with just a fraction of the military budget.

    They have to move. There is no other option. There’s no financial resources coming to give debt financing to a dying fishing business. The mother should move further inland, pursue a different business. Otherwise, what prospects does she have?
    Even the woman selling beer, that’s not so bad, but she’s clearly barely treading water. The fishing industry is a dying one. Especially coastal fishing and droughts ravage so many parts of the African coasts.
