    Excellent instructional video for these 5hp B&S's fuel system. I've got three (yeah, they common as dirt) I have to maintain, and you hit all the "sore spots". The pick-up tube repair/replacement trick is ingenious -- gotta try that one.
    If folks don't want to invest in a set of torch tip cleaners (me), I've found that a section of wound acoustic guitar string works just as well. The winds abrade any crud away fairly well and you can get different gauges but I find the medium gauge "G" string usually fills the bill. (No "G" string jokes, please. LOL. )
    Love your stuff, T.D. You da man. Keep 'em comin'.

    Taryl I just picked up a chipper with the same 5hp B&S but the pull cord or flywheel were frozen. When i drained the oil and gas tank it looked like it had been sitting at at the bottom of a lake for a while. Surprisingly I hit the the thang with some WD and fresh oil overnight and wouldnt you know it started! I have to rebuild the carb and clean the tank out real good tho since it only starts with starter fluid.

    Merry Christmas! /great videos.I have a carburetor like the one you are rebuilding, however my problem is that someone didn't close the choke valve when taking the air cleaner assembly off and couple of screws fell into the throat chamber and jammed
    the throttle valve butterfly valve. I took the valve apart (it's a flat sheet metal disc with some scratch markings on it and two small holes with screw hole in the middle. I can't recall how it was positioned on the pivot shaft because it was really deep in the bore and hard to see when I removed the center screw. Can you tell me how I need to position it on the pivot shaft?

    thanks taryl. just got my old log splitter going thats got one of them old 5hp briggs. no rust in gas tank but it got bunch of water in it sometime during that big storm we had. I syphoned tank of gassed water but water was probably still in that float bowl. got it popping with starter fluid and after a dozen times of it starting and dying it finally started running again on the no ethanol gas we got here at farmers coop. I sure do appreciate the clear explanation you do on how it all works and goes together and how to fix it properly not like the fools that got a high quality shade tree shop that dont know what the heck they talking about

    Great video! I have one of these carbs on a 5 HP B&S powering an old Roto-Hoe shredder. It's a new carb. The problem is that the pump doesn't fill the "float bowl". I can pull the carb and fill the bowl with gas and the engine will run until the bowl is empty, and then die. I used epoxy to seal the connection between the metal part of the tube and the plastic part to make sure it is airtight, but that didn't help. All the passages in the carb that fill the bowl are clear. I'm thinking maybe a new pump diaphragm might fix it. I can't think of what else it could be. The float bowl doesn't leak.

  • @Hardcorediver44
    @Hardcorediver44 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Taryl, this video showed me how to fix my Pulsa Jet Carb on my Mclane mower. Also the rubber elbow and pipe connection at the engine that pulses the carb had cracks in it which made it hard starting. New rubber parts and now it starts first pull.

    • @rickjames6948
      @rickjames6948 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EXACTLY. The pumping action is caused by the crankcase breather hose connected TO the carb. There are 2 rubber hoses, one 45 degree and the other 90 degree. The 45 down on the breather and the 90 at the carb.

    I've had to do a similar thing to the inlet manifold on a Nissan RB25 inlet manifold, the coolant inlet spigot was rusted out so I went to the radiator shop & they gave me a 1 3/8 inch brass spigot off a radiator, I ground it down so it would be a nice press fit,applied some non hardening gasket cement onto the spigot then tapped it into the manifold with a block of wood & a hammer,it served its purpose well.
    The car had been sitting around for 4 years with fuel in it,somehow water got into the fuel tank & rusted the inside of the tank.
    In the future,I'm going to descale the fuel tank with diluted hydrochloric acid which I have a bottle of then perhaps seal the inside of the tank.

    Taryl,
    I've been messing with small engines for the last 63 years. Never in all those years have I ever heard of a split fuel pickup tube. But I am working on a Briggs 5 hp right now that would not run after I cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor. So I watched your video and then took the tank back off and sure enough the dang brass tube was split all the way down the side.
    Why would they design these like this? Have you figured out what makes them split? Is it metal fatigue from the vibration or what?
    After watching your solution which I liked just fine I tried something else. I soldered up the split which took a while but I finally got a good solder joint. I put it back together using superglue to make sure it would stay like you suggested. Engine runs like a dream now.
    Thank you very much. I never in a million years would have thought to look for a split in the tube. You are the man.

    I replaced my carb with a cheap eBay one. Briggs stopped making the OEM, so I had to do a little retrofitting to make it work. Now when I throw the choke to run the machines rpms want to sky rocket more than I want. I immediately choke it back down but then the machines performance gets sluggish. Any recommendations for fixing this? I see that you said the screw at the base is a slow speed adjustment, is there a high anywhere or an choke adjustment? Also is there supposed to be a spring in that low speed adjustment?

    Great vid Mr Tarly!! I have same carb setup on a Western Auto tiller. After engine is shut off (air cleaner removed), I can see fuel filling the carburetor throat. The gas tank is venting through the cart. Any ideas on what causes that? The gas cap on the tiller is non-vented, so I assume the tank is designed to vent through the cart. But instead of venting fumes, liquid fuel is being pushed up from tank and flooding carb. Thank you.

    Hello Taryl, hope you can help, I have a 5hp BnS engine, bought a new pulsa carb for it, and I found that it is not pumping gas into the bowl. I can put gas in the bowl and run the engine, so the main intake is working, but once the bowl is empty the engine stops. I can cover the main air intake on the carb and then it seems like the pump will pull some gas and the engine will try to start. If I uncover the hole I get absolutely nothing as far as the engine firing. Another piece of info, the gas tank is old, it has rust inside and has those plastic compartments to keep the gas from sloshing around. Don't know if that would lend to the issue. With those compartments I don't see how any of the recommended cleaning strategies would work. I've scraped off what I can reach, shaken it up with gas, and drained. Did that a few times. Seems like air being sucked in somewhere and that is not allowing enough suction for the gas to be pulled up but I can't find where that can be. Your thoughts on what I can check. Thx.

    Hey buddy.. I had a few weeds growing inside a large sandbox. I didn't feel like plucking them by hand so i went ahead and fired up my 21" briggs mower to mow the weeds down. I had the air filter and the air filter housing off because i figured id let the carb get a breath of fresh air with a wide open throttle and choke... Besides, with all that sand and dust flying everywhere i didn't want to get my new air filter dirty. Before i fired her up i checked the oil.. It was a little bit shy on oil and i couldn't find any oil around so just went on ahead and filled the crank case up with some sawdust and the gas tasted a bit bland so i went ahead and added some sugar and sweet n low to sweeten it up a little. Anyhow... After i got done mowing the sandbox i decided to go on and mow a couple of rock beds while i was at it. So a couple days later i fired her up to mow a cactus garden and it started stalling out. Think it could be the carb needs cleaning?

    Question for y`all. I cleaned the carb and replaced the diaphragm, seemed to run great. The next day I tried to start it and it ran for about 15 - 20 seconds. I noticed the carb was flooding out, so I took the gas cap off and it drained out. Is it the gas cap, a gasket leak issue, a fuel setting, or maybe all of the above? Thanx in advance.

    Had three of these that were slightly popping thru the exhaust on idle. When i choke it a little that would go away.
    Do i need to drill out the main jet one size? Tried rebuilt and new carbs both ran about the same. Valves were sealed i pulled the heads off to check.

      Sounds like you're running slightly rich and that popping is the unburned fuel burning off through the exhaust. Literally "after-fire", not back-fire.

      @@Hjerte_Verke If I choke it to give it more fuel and the issue goes away how can it be too rich?

      There's clean and there's CLEAN. Carb is stil dirty or the gaskets failed or the pickup tube is cracked. All just like in the video.

      Use them if you want to ENLARGE the jet size and wonder why the plug is BLACK from it. Dummy squad......
