I'm rather old (70+). We had very little money growing up. We were fine, but sometimes mom had to be creative at the end of the month to provide sack lunches for five kids. One of the things she fell back on if we were out of the usual choices for sandwiches was brown sugar sandwiches: just butter (usually margarine) and brown sugar pressed together between bread slices. She did it because she didn't have much in the larder, we thought of it as a treat. Not very healthy, but yummy. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I was just about t o write a very similar comment growing up in the 70s after my dad died there wasnt a lot of money about, plain sugar sandwiches worked to keep us kids happy and quiet for not a lot of money.
I was born in 1991 and we also grew up fairly poor. My mom was a single parent and she would also resort to sugar sandwiches if there was nothing else for me and my sister for our school lunches. I still make it from time to time to pay homage to my mom and her will to make sure we had food everyday. May she Rest In Peace
I had sugar butties when I was young. Once the gas meter was emptied, Nan would buy jam. I don't know how she managed to feed me but she was the most amazing cook. The only thing I wasn't allowed to try was tripe and onions that she made for her partner as a treat.
With the toast, that is done all the time as I grew up. However, it's with butter that melts slightly, regular sugar, and cinnamon. This is how I've had it all my life.
The salami grape reminds me of a party food my sister makes, bacon-wrapped dates. You wrap a pitted date with raw bacon, pinning it in place with a toothpick, and then bake it in the oven until the bacon is cooked. It's so delicious.
@@eurogael Completely off-topic but I'd love to visit New England. Mainly because of being a big Stephen King fan in my youth but also for the seafood and fish.
So funny in the bottom left corner, Boston looking up tongue hanging out (as usual) as Barry tucks into gerkin plus oreo, and the gerkin yoghurt and honey combo 😂
I can't be the first dutchie to say, white bread , butter and sugar, YES!!! Try it on beschuit ( sort of toast) as well! It's great! My mom used to tell me about when she grew up they sometimes would have some bread with butter and sugar on Sunday. (1940's/1950's)

The Caviar and White Chocolate dish was on Hells Kitchen as one of the dishes done by a contestant. Gordon Ramsay basically had the same reaction as you
Not really a fan of white chocolate (since it's just cocoa butter, so pretty much the opposite of the dark chocolate I like) so I'm probably not going to try it, but I'm wondering if Barry overdid it on the caviar.
@@rolfs2165 Considering Gordon Ramsay had the same reaction as Barry even down to spitting it out. I'm pretty sure Caviar and Choclate of any kind isn't a good combo
@@rolfs2165 given the size of the pot of caviar, I suspect it is not very good caviar either. Really nice caviar is hugely expensive and comes in a tiny tin. The glass jar stuff is not very nice even on its own.
First time commenter my name is Bill Griffey I live in Iowa in the U.S.A. My Snack is Cinnamon and sugar toast, toast your bread. Butter it and add sugar and cinnamon. I have a shaker that has the sugar and cinnamon mixed in equal parts. Tank you for all the entertaining ways you have shown me how to get back in the kitchen.

Another fun video as always. Not a food combo as such, but I had a bar a few years ago of white chocolate with lemon zest and cracked black pepper. It works surprisingly well.
3:35 I think toasting the bread so the butter melts and the sugar glazes on the bread would make that even better. I have a "hack" where I have toast with those little mini powdered donuts, and I set the donuts on top of the toast so that the powdered sugar glazes the toast, while also giving the donuts a nice buttery flavor as well.
Kudos to you for being brave for trying these. The sugar on buttered bread is sort of like what we have here. What we do here in the USA is have a mixture of ground cinnamon and sugar and have it on toast. You know as a treat. I can't believe that I going to say this, but out of the strange ones I'd probably like is the chocolate covered bacon. ugh I was about to lose my lunch just watching you.
I missed out on the form but for funs sake, a cube of good strong cheddar with a glace cherry (you know those cheapie bright red bagged ones) is delish! I had some at a 70s party because it was a finger food back then. Oddly delish!
The sugar sandwich brought back memories for my Dad. 😊 He says they used to fry the sandwich so that the sugar was caramelised. Another variation was condensed milk. 😊
@malcolmhenderson3866 fairy bread is (though there may be some variations of course) generaly a white sandwich bread covered in margarine or butter and then covered in sprinkles (or hundreds and thousands if you are nor american) they eat it as a birthday treat for small children in Australia mostly and I believe some Nordic countries do this also if I am not mistaken. Fluffernutter is a very common sandwich here in the US. It's peanut butter and mashmallow fluff. I also like to add bananas to it, so instead of the mayo you've got in the sandwich you've got around 8 minutes in, you've got marshmallow fluff. It's rich but quite tasty.
At the start of the video you mentioned a form for us to put our fav combo into. I thought to myself "I wonder if I will see my fav childhood sandwich" and you kinda showed it. When I was a kid I told people I loved Peanut Butter and Mayo sandwiches. As I got a little older (still a kid) I was at a friends house and we made some but it tasted nothing like what I made at home. I went home and talked to my mom and realized that we almost always had "Miracle Whip" and that I may have been confusing that w/ mayo. So I made it and that day learned the difference between Miracle Whip and Mayo. We used to put bananas on them too so try it again but w/ Miracle Whip. The sweet tangy Miracle Whip and PB is AMAZING!!!!!! I still love it to this day and I'm now in my 40's
I'm from New York. My wife, who's from Minnesota, told me about peanut butter & mayo sandwiches, which I thought sounded disgusting as well. However, she also puts raisins in it sometimes. I was surprised to like the PB & mayo, but they're even better with the raisins. Maybe try that.
I’m not sure how common it is but one of my all time favorite combos that I eat nearly every day… peas and noodles! Just cooked through and normal, pasta and green peas with butter!
try dipping apples and soy sauce! the sweetness + saltiness make a good combo! don’t knock it till you try it! soy sauce with vanilla ice cream also supposedly tastes like caramel, would love to see you try these!!
I do the peanut butter, banana and mayo all the time. Take it to the next level by adding iceberg lettuce. Sounds strange, but it doesn't add much to the flavors, but gives a bit of crunch that cuts down on the "mushiness" that the rest of the ingredients have.
@@mrbarrylewisit was lol. Certainly better than the chicken gujouns version lol. Fun times. Rarely ever get the fountain out these days. I live in my own bungalow flat now but not far from her house. Here is one for you to try. A soft boiled egg and yoke only cover it on your teaspoon with either sugar puffs or frosties. I don't eat egg whites. But this is best if the yoke is runny.
Chocolate covered bacon is one of the biggest cravings I had when pregnant with my second child. I still love it. Salty/sweet is my favorite combo. Now I want some but have no bacon.
I had something similar to that mayo and penut butter sandwhich .. but with lettuce instead of the banana. I had it when I was younger and was bizarrely nice. People used to rave about it online.
Tomato Sauce on buttered toast is for winners. As kids we used to enjoy, Weetabix buttered somtimes with a sauce of taste. My mum who's 88 enjoys Banana and sugar sandwhiches.
I thought of this in the last video when you ate grated cheese with chocolate. In Japan there is a brand called Crunky and they did a lovely baked cheese white chocolate. It was seriously amazing. Had no right to be, it tasted of chocolate and it tasted of cheese but it was magnificent. I had it in one of those Japanese snack subscription boxes.
Salt and vinegar are flavor enhancers which are both in mayonnaise, as long as it’s combined thoroughly in the right ratios you don’t taste either of them but they lift up everything else.
When I was a kid my grandad used to eat Golden Syrup sandwiches which in a way is similar to the bread and sugar as syrup is effectively just sugar. However, my grandad every now and then to change things up would put various different fruits in such as slices of apple or banana etc. I used to love the Golden syrup sandwiches... just never with the fruit in lol
Not sure if you put this in a video, but I once saw a video of someone putting Dorito's on their peanut butter and jam sandwich... I tried it since I had both in my kitchen and I actually liked it!
Years ago a Australian Chef Adrian Richardson did a Candied Bacon with chocolate recipe. Using streaky bacon, brown sugar and grilled it then drizzled chocolate over it. As soon as you said mentioned it I thought of his recipe lol
Here in sweden it's very common with ketchup on rice when eating dishes like korv stroganoff (sausage stroganoff) which is actually an tomato based dish with "falukorv", onion, tomato puree/ketchup, cream, spices etc and it's eaten with rice and a lot, me included does add some ketchup onto it :)
when i worked in a cafe, i used to have a sandwich of tikka masala paste, mayo and chicken, it was jum, i cant do spice so the mayo tasted good and cooled it down, also there was the sausage, nutella and marmite sandwich , that was yum
I like making a pile of shredded iceburg lettuce then split a banana from top to bottom and lay it on the lettuce. Spread mayo on top of the banana then sprinkle chopped peacans on top of the banana. yum
For the sugar and butter one toast the bread so it's nice and hot buttered real quick and then sprinkle the sugar on it tastes better that way add a touch of cinnamon
The rice & ketchup reminds me of a favourite of mine, mashed potato and ketchup. Okay that sounds normal enough, but I mix it all up so it's a consistent pinkish colour. Absolutely delicious.
I grew up eating banana, peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches. I think the tang in the miracle whip makes a huge difference compared to the mayonnaise. You should try the miracle whip combo and see if it makes a difference to your palate.
Try oranges, peeled, and cut into chunks, and topped with shredded coconut and a sprinkle of sugar. You could add other fruit like grapes if you wanted. We had this as a dessert when we had excess oranges growing up.
So, I kind of want to submit it, but I'm certain you've heard of it before; in certain states in the US, they love having apple pie.... with a slice of cheddar cheese. (Mostly Vermont, from what I recall? But I think a few neighboring states have adopted it) To be fair, you put a slice on top of it while the pie is still hot from the oven so it melts on it, and apparently it's really nice. I've never tried it so I can't comment, but some people swear by it. I have a feeling if Barry tried it, he probably wouldn't love it, to say the least. Y'know, since ice cream exists.. and frozen yogurt.. and custard.. I dunno, some people love their cheese. Anyway, good video, Barry; how long until you put Stuart through one of these? I mean.. he did have you try Surströmming with him. Mwahahaha~

try dipping apples and soy sauce! the sweetness + saltiness make a good combo! don’t knock it till you try it!
soy sauce with vanilla ice cream also supposedly tastes like caramel, would love to see you try these!!
I do the peanut butter, banana and mayo all the time. Take it to the next level by adding iceberg lettuce. Sounds strange, but it doesn't add much to the flavors, but gives a bit of crunch that cuts down on the "mushiness" that the rest of the ingredients have.
Cheese on toast with chocolate spread is nice
Melted?
My mum and i loved eating melted diary milk chocolate with party cocktail sausages lol xx
See that, that I already know will be good!!
@@mrbarrylewisit was lol. Certainly better than the chicken gujouns version lol. Fun times. Rarely ever get the fountain out these days. I live in my own bungalow flat now but not far from her house.
Any tips on where to get cooking trays for a 9L Quest mini oven?. (Only have a flat tray and a cooling rack that came with it). Also would be fun to see a video testing one out. Interested on your opinion. Thanks mate. Oh and found some brill gloves that makes you not burn yourself when carry or pulling stuff out the oven. They are also good for the BBQ aswell. Let me know and i'll send you the link to test them. I love them. My older sister uses them aswell.
Hope you, family & the doggos have a fab weekend. 🙂👍🇬🇧 . Leon. xx
I always love seeing Boston and his tongue in the background/corner of the cam
Here is one for you to try. A soft boiled egg and yoke only cover it on your teaspoon with either sugar puffs or frosties. I don't eat egg whites. But this is best if the yoke is runny.
I love Birdseye potato waffles with golden syrup. Reminds me of childhood days.
My favorite thing ever is Mint Chip ice cream and Root beer floats. They're amazing.
My go to snack in the US is frying or air frying tortilla chips, toss them with cinnamon sugar, add honey, toss again. So yummy
Apple crumble with melted cheese on top yum
The peanut butter, banana, mayo sandwich is exactly from my childhood. 😊
I'm kinda curious where you grew up, this is something my dad used to eat all thw time. Eastern NC here.
@@jessiep2471 mid east coast of Florida.
@@jessiep2471my dad did too (ne Kansas)
Same here minus the peanut butter
The sugar bread reminded me of when I was a kid (1980's). Sometimes for breakfast we would have a piece of toast with butter, sugar and cinnamon.
I like to mix my Peter Pan peanut butter with maple syrup in a bowl and eat it and I also like nacho cheese Doritos with cream cheese as like a dip
Salt and vinegar are flavor enhancers which are both in mayonnaise, as long as it’s combined thoroughly in the right ratios you don’t taste either of them but they lift up everything else.
I make a lentil chilli bake and put crushed cornflakes and cheddar cheese on the top.
Add bacon to the pb and nana sarnie. Yum.
Substitute the salami for parma ham, also add a tiny bit of brie and a sun dried tomato. Game changer!!
Twix dipping in cream cheese! And ice-cream rapped in a iceberg lettuce! 😮
I've had a bacon cream doughnut, but this is all after-pub kebab shop was closed food.
I love a glass of buttermilk with cornbread in it, eat it with a spoon 😊
I like making a pile of shredded iceburg lettuce then split a banana from top to bottom and lay it on the lettuce. Spread mayo on top of the banana then sprinkle chopped peacans on top of the banana. yum
For the sugar and butter one toast the bread so it's nice and hot buttered real quick and then sprinkle the sugar on it tastes better that way add a touch of cinnamon
Marmite drizzle before grilling cheese on toast.....or mint jelly on a cheese sandwich
10.12 I loved seeing Boston's little face watching as you reviewed the pickles :'D
The rice & ketchup reminds me of a favourite of mine, mashed potato and ketchup. Okay that sounds normal enough, but I mix it all up so it's a consistent pinkish colour. Absolutely delicious.
15:02 that face you make when you eat something your kid has prepared
I grew up eating banana, peanut butter and miracle whip sandwiches. I think the tang in the miracle whip makes a huge difference compared to the mayonnaise. You should try the miracle whip combo and see if it makes a difference to your palate.
Grew up on Bread ,Butter and sugar sandwiches as a kid in the late 60's and 70's .
Try oranges, peeled, and cut into chunks, and topped with shredded coconut and a sprinkle of sugar. You could add other fruit like grapes if you wanted. We had this as a dessert when we had excess oranges growing up.
Bread sugar and butter was my childhood at my nana's house for breakfast loved it
So, I kind of want to submit it, but I'm certain you've heard of it before; in certain states in the US, they love having apple pie.... with a slice of cheddar cheese.
Mwahahaha~
You might want to try Kraft Mac and cheese with cold applesauce on top. Good stuff!!!
Your poor stomach!!!! I feel for you
