On Emmy Made she said most of the onion recipes include Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper and that is the seasoning for a Maryland crab boil, (which it is, I've made them) hence the name Onion Boil.
videos like these really are a testament to how far you have come from somone who had never cooked before to somone whos a respected name in the foodie community
That "healthy Coke" is no different from the previous "healthy Coke" pranks that would go around on things like 5 minute crafts where they used Worcestershire sauce instead of balsamic vinegar.
@mrbarrylewis I think you need traditional balsamic vinegar. You get different categories for it, and the tradizionale stuff is super exclusive and costs an arm and a leg, but it tastes fruity and woody instead of just sour 😅
I am from Philadelphia and I knew that was Pat Butcher from Eastenders. I used to watch it in the 80’s and 90’s on PBS. I loved that show 🫶 I know it is still on TV, but I can’t get it anymore.
Thanks Alex, they are mostly ones i'm sent in, I have a long old list on my phone along with a host of video ideas, probably about 200+ ideas on the list at the moment
Emmy's guess on the "onion boil" was that her recipe was mainly "Old Bay" seasoning which is used in a crab boil. So crab boil - onion boil? Don't really know otherwise.
Ah yep ok, that makes sense, I skipped that in my go at it! My best guess was that the butter was boiling it and sort of steamed the onion in the foil packet perhaps
@@mrbarrylewisThe only thing I could think of was a boil as in the medical ailment. If you use your imagination a bit, you have a skin of onion around the pus of the buttery herby (gone bananas, clearly) mix
10:35 That pretty much how California Pizza Kitchen makes it sandwich bread(for focaccia just add red onions, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and salt on top before baking.)
We do something similar on the grill with the onion. Have been for years, never called it an onion boil. Lol just grilled onions. However we also slice up some zucchini and squash to cook with it. Sometimes even jalapeños. So good
Watching the latest Barry video is a lil tradition of mine and my partners. I’ve been watching for years but I recently introduced my partner into your videos and safe to say you’ve got him hooked 🤣 keep it up Barry! ❤️
There’s a restaurant in Brighton called 64°. We were very regular customers until we became parents. Back in 2013/14 they used to give you a “rum Haribo” before dessert. These were fizzy gummy bears that had been melted, mixed with rum, and reconstituted in little bear moulds. For our tenth anniversary in 2014 they presented us with a giant Rum Haribo. It turned out to be an epic undertaking and required two litres of rum to make it work. We ate what we could and took it home, froze it, and it took about six months, and several parties, to finally finish.
Barry! Hope you are doing well! I stumbled on your page after years and see you have grown so much! I used to watch when you’d test the kitchen gadgets😂
you might as well have done whole roasted onions. when I do it, I pop them into the steamer first - easier to take the middles out - they usually pop out. then I smother with oil, deposit into the oven and ignore until brown. then I add a filling and pop them back in for a few minutes until the filling is piping hot. serve atop couscous (the perfect ultimate lazy food) and devour. oh - and I get those absolutely huge onions - not the bog-standard supermarket ones.
I imagine with the balsamic vinegar seltzer, it probably works better with the super expensive balsamic vinegar which I've heard has a sweeter flavor and is commonly used in both sweet and savory applications.
Onion boil reference is from a seafood boil, where you boil a bunch of seafood, potatoes eggs, onions in seasoned water and then dress heavily with a seasoned butter sauce.
The word "boil" has various roots but I've seen it refer to "seethe" in European medieval setting - to soak or saturate in a liquid. And indeed, the bake in butter and seasoning does a bit of delicious seething 🙂.
Sweet onion, butter, salt, pepper -oven bake until soft. So freaking good. In America there is something called Vidalia Onions that come from Georgia and they are a very good sweet onion and make the best version.
The second one legit reminds me (though it tastes so much better) of something I do with orange squash and sparkling water, it’s a much healthier and less sugary alternative to Fanta/Tango and tricks you into thinking it’s the real thing
Barry i wonder how hamburger would be in the onions? I just watched Emmy from emmymade and she did a the same onion bomb. I love a good sweet onion I grow sweet green onions and eat them right out of the garden. Or as an onion sandwich two pieces white bread butter and some salt! Also radish sandwiches are good!
That is the standard filling in my country. Alongside red peppers, potatoes, eggplant and cabbage stuffed with meat. Basically, any veg they can stuff meat into in any way.
@sarahrosen4985 we do a stuffed pepper with rice hamburger tomato and we either do it Italian style or Spanish depending on how we feel maybe top them with cheese. We also do a great cabbage roll! I am in Arizona USA. I grew up with German, Italian, Spanish and a little tex-mex cooking styles and as I grew up I enjoy cooking lots of different styles!
We have a shop that sells flavored olive oil and balsamic vinegar. My two favorite balsamic flavors are lemon and blueberry. I mix them with seltzer, and they are delicious. You're right that the plain balsamic isn't that great. I really want to try the boiled onion.
Oh noooooo Barry that's far too much balsamic. Just a little bit makes a refreshing drink in the summer. A nice raspberry flavored one works really well!
I tried the Onion Boil and thought that the amount of spices was way too much. It was like eating sand at times! It is essentially a baked onion with a ton of butter. What’s not to love about that.just tone down the spices.
The Tasting History channel did a video on the ancient Roman version of Gatorade. It was basically water, vinegar, salt and something else that I can’t remember. That balsamic vinegar drink reminded me of that video. You should watch it and “improve” the TikTok recipe.
The baked onion looks amazing. Although, I don;'t think it really needs all of the seasoning. Btw, can confirm, from some experiments I did in my 20s, that gummy bears also plump up when soaked in vodka.
Since you mentioned that the sprite became sweeter, that means it came out of the gummies. I wonder if you can keep the gummies sweeter if you dissolved sugar into the sprite first. maybe even cook sprite with the sugar, because only so much sugar wants to dissolve into a cold beverage.
The only thinng I infuse my gummibears with is wodka 😁. But I'm definitely gonna try freezing them ! And seriously? Balsamic vinager cola? You sure you think it's gonna work? fun video once again Barry! ( and yes, seriously jealous of your pizzaoven!)
Barry: The gummies are better with vodka, but they don't really change the flavour all so much, just the texture. You should take suggestions from the community for what alcohol to try and make a video to find the best alcohol+ gummy bear combo
I think you're supposed to do onion boil with a sweet onion like a vidalia or a sweet yellow or a sweet white so maybe it would taste better if it wasn't purple?
I'm guessing that you made this vid about the same time Emmy was doing her take on the "onion boil", and her video reminded me that during WWII here in the UK, onions were in short supply commercially so to get a boiled onion (actually boiled, like, take an onion, boil 'til soft, then serve!) was considered a treat, these non-boiled onion boils are decadent by comparison with their generous seasoning and buttering... :P
That pizza sandwich is just the same thing as taking any flatbread such as a nan, putting sandwich fillings on it and folding it over. I don't see the difference.
i feel like that pizza dough sandwich thing wasnt meant to be cooked in a super high heat pizza oven, bc the outside will get cooked and burn long before any of the heat penetrates the center, should've done it in the normal oven instead
I got jelly babies at a British shop. They were great. Ordered the same brand from Amazon, tasted like gummy bears. Looked at ingredients. The word bovine was missing.
Interesting that this has become a trend. We used to do this back in the 90s when I was a kid in Germany... it's not my taste personally, but I know many people who absolutely love it. What I like, also often done here at the end of the 2000s, is to soak the gummy bears in vodka overnight. Vodka and sugary gummy bears can be a dangerous combination. What we also liked to do as a gift for celebrations: Ferrero Rocher finely crushed, cream and vodka mixed as a liqueur... or Rafaello, coconut milk, cream and vodka mixed as a liqueur... bring the mixture to a boil and fill it in a swing-top bottle, let it cool and put it in the fridge overnight... oh dear, you'd think we didn't have any other hobbies in our youth here in very rural north-western Germany... sorry, I drifted off topic. lol.
Sprite isn't the only liquid you can soak gummy bears in. When I was in high school, gummy bears were banned from campus for a very short time because a handful of students got caught with vodka infused gummies. True story.

I might have to give that onion one a go! Love your videos and can't wait to see the new kitchen up and running.
Ann Reardon debunked the "Coca Cola" tik tok a while back. Her taste reaction was very similar to yours.
Ah that's good to know! I was thinking it was just me as I really like balsamic vinegar too!
There are very old and sweet balsamic vinegars from italy, but yours looked fairly cheap and sour 😂
It needs to be berry flavored sparkling water or it doesn’t work
@mrbarrylewis I think you need traditional balsamic vinegar. You get different categories for it, and the tradizionale stuff is super exclusive and costs an arm and a leg, but it tastes fruity and woody instead of just sour 😅
@@koolkayn You can also include fruit or fruit juice and turn it into a shrub.

Oh my goodness I was going to ask about how your kitchen was coming along and you show it. Looking awesome it's nice

"sparkling gravy" Quote of the day. Definitely something to keep in hand mate
And I just watched Big Clive put American whiskey through his carbonating gizmo.
Next up, gravy in the sodastream?
I think whomever invented that onion recipe would have their mind blown by a stuffed bell pepper.
aha yes! I kind of want to put rice in the onion now! I still don't get the boil reference though!

You can drink balsamic vinegar with water all right. But only take a little bit like a teaspoon or two! Its very refreshing in summer.
Mmmmm, I love baked onions. My dad used to do the in the fire when we would go camping. That was over 40 years ago.
3:17 she used La Croix in her video. Strawberry flavour quite possibly. This definitely wouldn't work with unflavoured sparkling water.
lol watery vinegar, you've discovered TAB!

The pizza sandwich reminded me of Piadina. There used to be an Italian restaurant in my city that specialized in making those & it was delicious.
Onion boil reference is from a seafood boil, where you boil a bunch of seafood, potatoes eggs, onions in seasoned water and then dress heavily with a seasoned butter sauce.
Fun fact: chips are called "potetgull" here in norway. Which means "potato gold" 😅
I call then baked onions, put butter and a beef bullion cube in the center, bake until tender. Awesome!
