Thank you, Kevin and Dr. Mitchell for sharing this information! I had parathyroid surgery this past year at the Norman Hospital for Endocrine Surgery in Tampa, Florida. This is the place to go to have this surgery performed. People come from all over the world to this hospital, because it is the best and is so convenient to get there. As discussed, If your calcium level is high, you more than likely have hyperparathyroidism, even if your TSH is within normal limits and nothing shows up on a scan. This is what happened to me. I had high calcium for 20 years and the surgeon removed 2 benign tumors that were 1.5 inches long. None or the many doctors that I saw throughout this journey recommended further evaluation....despite a strong family history of the disease.
Please continue sharing this vital information to this community and the medical profession!

Had Gastric sleeve surgery and 4 years later diagnosed with Secondary Hyperparathyroidism ( 4 hyperplasia glands / 3 surgically removed )..... Always know your PTH and Calcium lab work results especially if you have had any type of Bariatric surgery.

The timing of this podcast was perfect. My doctor discovered that I have overactive parathyroid, and I have had an ultrasound, which discovered nodules. Today I just had biopsies done on them, so I’m anxious to hear the results.

Thank you Kevin for educating the community on this horrible disease that is so many times misdiagnosed, as in my case. It was so awesome to see Dr. Jamie Mitchell on your podcast. I had my surgery done on 04/04/2024 with Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Watkins at The Hospital for Endocrine Surgery Tampa Fl. The doctors and the complete medical staff were all outstanding. I'm so glad I contacted them for a second opinion.

I have to wonder if some of those tumors could be caused by parasites

I was an overenthusiastic vegetarian for years. My breakfast and lunch consisted of green smoothies containing a lot of spinach and other high oxalate greens.
I developed a huge (2+ cm) kidney stone in right kidney. Urologist told me it was too large to ever pass and not to worry about it(though MRI was taken because of lower right back pain). No one told me not to eat spinach or the many high oxalate veggies I ate daily.
Fast forward to a rogue parathyroid (first clue was a high blood calcium level 3 years running + osteopenia). My PC doctor did want me to have further tests right away, but I actually put it off, moved, changed doctors, and finally had those further tests, concluding that I had hyperparathyroidism.
Surgery a year ago, and blood levels are good now. At 68, I'm hoping to improve my bone strength!
