  • "Don’t identify as an artist, be the art." - Kevin Smith
When your heart’s left anterior descending artery becomes 100% blocked, the result is a massive heart attack known as The Widowmaker. Few survive its fatal clutch.
This week’s guest beat the odds. But this should come as no surprise for those well versed in the Kevin Smith canon. Because Kevin has always been an outlier - a fiercely independent voice who has been successfully cutting against the grain for as long as he can remember.
Today the charismatic master storyteller, filmmaker, author, comic book writer & podcast maven shares his most amazing tale to date - the story of Kevin Smith.
Note - this is AUDIO ONLY (we didn't film this podcast)
    Enjoy!

There is no bias in the science. I am Midwest born and bred and spent my life raising meat. I am a plant based whole food eater only. It has nothing to do with the political or moral stand points. I have cancer that was supposed to kill me by now and I am still alive and just finished 2nd place in a 5k this morning. I did not get here today by remaining on the SAD (standard american diet) diet. I got here by eating what the science shows. If you are new to this then do your own homework and suit yourselves. I am 5 years alive, eating plants with knowledge that I have already surpassed everything I was supposed to be. Peace

I just turned fifty last month. I remember hearing about Rich Roll many years ago on CNN. I looked him up and followed his blog and bought the first e-book with a bunch of vegan recipes. I still remember the first thing I made..It was a kale leaf wrap made with sea vegetables (had no idea what that was) and other fresh veggies. I actually enjoyed and the journey began. I wrote Rich an email not long after that thanking him and his wife for such awesome information. I told him my family history with heart disease and high blood pressure and Rich told me to seek out Dr. Esselstyn's book Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease." Rich said it would "rock my world"...and it did. I've been plant-based (mostly vegan since with zero regrets about missing animal products from a meal). I feel if I didn't find Rich and his message, I might have wound up like Kevin and many other guys who didn't know the facts. Today, I swim, bike, run and lead a pretty active lifestyle. Thanks so much, Rich. I appreciate everything you and your family have shared to make the world a better, more compassionate and inspired community. Best, Bill Ward

On May 1 my wife Renee and I will celebrate 4 years of being vegan - "Hey no fronts"!
I don't know if we get here without Rich and Julie's book, The Plant Powered Way.
In their seminal book we found recipes that were tasty. Julie said something about food that I'll never forget, that food creates a connection to the earth. She was right on.
It's been a great ride - so far. The food we eat is delish. We have a connection to the earth, people everywhere, through the food we eat.
We're grateful to live nearby Paonia, CO, ground zero for organic farming here. We know some of the people who make our food - "know farmers, know food".
The ride hasn't been easy. It's taken time for my taste buds to prefer fruit over candy. To see pizza and processed foods as poison, corporate control, and causing people to die an early death. To look at meat and see violence and war. To feel veggies making me stronger.
Finding recipes we love takes patience. Living this way takes time - Renee spends most of the day on Sunday cooking. And it's not inexpensive - at least not in the interim.
But in the long run it's an investment. We're investing in ourselves, our neighbors, people we'll never meet, and the world. We're helping to lower health insurance costs. We're moving our feet.
It's not all rosy. The organic label is under attack - see this great piece by Elizabeth Henderson:
    www.populist.com/25.07.henderson.html
The great Daniel Berrigan, noted American Jesuit priest, anti-war activist, Christian pacifist, playwright, poet, and author once said, "Know where you stand and stand there".
I wish Rich would follow Berrigan's words and use his powerful platform to draw attention to what's happening with our food, farming, and the organic label. Encourage his audience to organize, as part of an all-hands-on-deck effort to block the folks who wear white socks from taking over our food supply. Prompt them to save and grow America's farming communities.
Henderson writes the truth about hydroponics. From her piece:
"Hydroponic operations grow fruits and vegetables indoors, in greenhouses or hoop houses, or even large warehouses where all the light is artificial and the roots of the plant sit in a neutral medium with nutrients provided through the irrigation system. The acreage of hydroponic tomatoes and berries increases steadily, underselling produce from smaller farms and hoodwinking shoppers who have no way of knowing what they are buying."
If we're not vigilant, if we don't get that we need to get off our addiction to cheap and convenient, our food supply will be appropriated by operations such as those that Henderson writes about. Who, through clever packaging and labeling, trick us into believing their products are organic, and grown by small businesses.
If people don't wake up, our food supply will be taken over by private equity and Amazon - all in the name of cheap and convenient. When you buy hydroponically grown fruit, or buy from Amazon Grocery, you are choking our economy, your neighbors, and farmers. You are handing over our food supply to a few, who's only loyalty is to the dollar.
So thanks in advance, Rich. We sincerely mean that. But please. Start taking one for the team. Please start talking about the problems. Your audience will reward you, I promise.

I laughed hard - not at Kevin but with him - listening to the ER scenario with the public/pubic shaving. I had the same tube inserted in my groin five years ago to the day, but wasn't shaved... everything was happening too fast in a 30 minute helicopter trip to the other best French heart hospital not in Paris. I was unconscious for the first 52 hours so no real anecdotes to relate except the awkwedness of attached tubes became interesting when being showered daily by nurses who tried not to raise my pulse rate! However, life threatening events call for life changing solutions... and since becoming plant-based I've dumped the meds and have never felt better.

Interesting listening to him talk about his particular heart attack as I had one myself and had a stent put in my artery to my heart December 27th. I had been dealing with something like a poking in my chest and it was just a poking but I knew it wasn't right so I went to Urgent Care and they didn't do a damn thing and so I decided to go to the emergency room and I think I took a left and sure enough they said you've had a heart attack cuz there's a chemical that's produced when you have one it's called troponin and they admitted me right then and I had the procedure done that evening. Apparently I had three occlusions one had been stented in the other two apparently were growing new arteries isn't it amazing that the body really wants to survive thank God I didn't have to have more stents because I already had two from about 5 years ago but I didn't have a heart attack what I had was a heart arrhythmia and I felt very weak I couldn't walk my dog across the street so I said something's not right checked with the heart doctor that I had seen for the arrhythmia and guess what we're putting stents in your heart this weekend and they did and they put me on statins and blood thinners. Blood thinners will make you bleed under your skin a lot if you even just touch yourself too hard and stand for me make me a bit demented like dementia not like crazy and I feel it gives me more body pain cuz they put me on statins the first time that it does and I had those symptoms and so I stopped taking it because they deal with chronic pain anyway and it's like where's the quality of life do I just like have so much pain I can't function but anyway to make a long story short this time around the cardiologist that saw me this last time said I have to take the status this is family takes steps and I have to take them if I want to survive. So I'm taking them and sometimes I can't remember names or my language is sometimes some stammering and it's just a freaking hate it and of course when I have more pain on top of the pain I'm used to it's just a nightmare I hope you're not suffering with that kind of stuff cuz it really sucks.
So women have different kind of symptoms when they have a heart attack but I guess it would vary from person to person seriously I didn't know that I had a heart attack I knew something was wrong though.
I'm doing my best to follow whole food plant-based diet can't do it 100%, I just can't I'm dealing with being quite isolated cuz my kids are in the west coast and start my best friends and I'm here in Charlotte North Carolina pretty much on my own with my dog and I'm a senior citizen living on some change on top of that although I'm blessed to have a home and food in my fridge but still times are very difficult. Why did I bring that up because I become a child when I'm feeling so alone and isolated and I revert to wanting to eat sugar as it is a form of love that I used to get from my dad when he took me to the soda shop and buy me a Sunday take me to the deli and buy me an eclair so sweets have become a huge pacifier to soothe the soul and feel my best to kick it. Right now eating a huge salad and have plenty of vegetables and fruit but like I said I'm not 100% but I'm doing my best to do my best and very happy for Kevin that he survived and that he's doing all these good things for himself. Rich I enjoy your programs. Take care and stay safe it's crazy times 😗
I'm still listening to this video and I just want to say I had the stents put in through my wrist both times. I'm so grateful that they didn't go through the groin. Being a female I've had all other kinds of surgeries I'm not going to go into but yeah I've had about eight major surgeries so I was just grateful they went through the wrist. If you think about it the whole thing is pretty fascinating that they can get a stent into one of your arteries in your heart through your groin or through your wrist how the heck does that happen. Damn Kevin you had quite a day. I heard that you dropped a ton away I think I saw one of your other videos but I can't recall all the conversation that I had to do with plant-based foods. Keep on doing what you're doing cuz apparently you're doing a lot better.

    de·ism
    /ˈdēˌizəm,ˈdāˌizəm/
    noun
A belief in the existence of a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the universe. The term is used chiefly of an intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries that accepted the existence of a creator on the basis of reason but rejected belief in a supernatural deity who interacts with humankind.

The weird thing is that long term meat eaters say the same thing. How much better they feel, how their blood work is amazing, how much weight they've lost, how much energy they have, how fit they are. So there has to be more than just diet to this whole thing. Seems to me either people are lying or there are other factors like stress, exercise, environmental issues, smoking or weed, mental problems etc. Being either vegan or carnivore seems to have similar outcomes of good health overall. Obviously getting rid of the junk food and drink is a biggie in both cases, but really I hear the same from both groups.
