Dana 35 in a TJ is a timebomb. You can beat on them but they will eventually fail if you trail ride. In the YJ it has better survival due to the spring perches being farther out from the carrier and under the axle. Trussing a 35 helps but the 8.8 is just a better more cost effective option.
True I did the same when I went up to 37-13.50 pitbulls. But with the giant pumpkin on them I can feel the loss in ground clearance which ultimately decides what you can go threw or over. I find myself wishing I kept the 35 and upgraded it every since I switched
I thought when in 4wd front tires would turn same as rear. There are times in this video when 2nd jeep looks like rear are spinning and front not rotating at all???
Tom Nelson That's because the differential is an "open" differential. Although it is in 4wd, the power shifts over to the side with least traction. So you'll see the tire not spinning, but on the other side it is. This is why standard 4wd is not enough and lockers are required to ensure that all 4 tires spin.
domeslacker that's true but I have drove my Jeep to Hard Rock 4x4 Park in the hills are nuts I never had a problem with 4 wheel drive at all without lockers give me a break it's not sure if it's the driver that's the problem
It always shocks me watching people spin out on big solid rocks. You would think that even with the tires at standard PSI they would still get better traction than on loose dirt etc.
Thomas Halley We're still not sure how his dana35 stood up to that. Likely was the fact that the tires are narrow and lighter than the standard 33x12.5. And luck. I say luck because I've had friends blow dana35s on the street running larger tires.
I ran my Wrangler with 33x12.50 cougaria m/t's and I never had a problem till the trans started grinding even with a fresh clutch and flushing clutch hydro system. Short of bouncing a locker in a stock 35 they probably won't give any issues. Now if I had run a 35 I'd probably have blown it out.
Nice wheeling! I have a 90' YJ, ax5 2.5 d35 ect... I live near and on very nice trail riding areas but I have no jeep crew lol, solo for now, also fr ny, ithaca to be precise, keep keepin my friends!
i have a wrangler yj laredo 4.0L high output that is 100% stock and has a rear LSD do you know if all yj come with a rear lsd because the one on the video doesn't look like it has one ??
On the TJ just curious, what gear ratio are you running and what do you have up front? I am sitting on a rear Dana 35 (3.73:1) and Dana 30 in the front and have a Ford 8.8 (4.10:1) sitting on a workbench trying to decide it's fate. '04 TJ here. Thx!
Silver TJ has 4.10s on his 35s w/ high pinion dana 30 front and 8.8 rear. It's a 4.0 with a 3spd auto. He's got an Aussie locker up front and a spartan rear, now a grizzly locker front and rear. White TJ has a 4cyl with 3spd auto. High pinion Dana 30 and 8.8 rear. 4.56 gears on 33s. Eaton locker up front and now an ARB out back.
i have a 1990 jeep yj on 33's tires with the dana 35 and 30 spline axle shaft never break one but there is some people out there that really like to break their jeeps
I drive a 2002 Wrangler X with 31" tires out here in Arizona. My wife and I along with our fellow Jeepers have hit some of the worst trails and terrain that the Arizona Desert has to offer...and I have NEVER damaged my Jeep or snapped the D35 or D30 up front. You need to know what you can do and CAN'T do with a TJ...pure and simple. Might I suggest that these off roaders invest in a good winch...so when you are stuck...you winch your ass out and SAVE your Axles...and LEARN how to OFF-ROAD. Just my humble opinion...
The skinny pedal will never make up for tires and lockers. Let half the air out of those tires, engage both lockers, and crawl in the lowest gear you've got. This is just sad.
Casey Panter wrong!! I have Dana 35 with 33" with a lunchbox locker in the front .and a Lincoln locker in the back .on a tj. I've never exploded a rear end..I have stripped the splines on the axle before ..
I'm undecided. But I think this kind of stuff may actually be even more boring than rock climbing. And I didn't think anything could be that boring and uninteresting.
Jessica Smith ppl are underestimating how steep the grade and failing to realize the Jeep has open differentials. Any open diff Jeep is going to have just as much trouble going up as this YJ.
for sale, slightly used never offroad lol
1:25 I can hear some serious engine detonation
Sheesh
Yj driver had a very interesting technique
Locking differential helps...getting pissed off breaks things. I can't believe how easy it went down that next hill...good job.

Excellent video with some great trail footage.
Scott
he has more of a chance doing it , crawling and letting the tires do the work
Jesus.. those tires look like balloons.. air down
air down those tires to 15 psi guarantee you will not have this problem at all
Carson Smith my thoughts exactly.....and a little momentum....
Thanks brother
Throw in some lockers maybe lol.
LMFAO yes off road common sense...
Of you look the TJ has either a locker or limited slip in at least the rear end. The YJ has open diffs. This isn't a fair comparison.
Tom Cooper def no comparing the 2. TJ is locked front and rear while YJ is open front and rear
@@domeslacker only the rubicoj model is locked
Damon Richter the TJ in the video is locked front and rear.
Air the tires down next time. Free traction. The skinny pedal is not always the answer
Thank you for that reply! Great video and and looks like a fun day. Gives me a cpl ideas on mine.
Check out my video
"Jeep Wrangler Gauntlet Rausch Creek Trailfest 2014"
Just had the front locker working that day
5:50!!! What's wheelin with buddies is all about!

Damn open diffs!!!!😂
I see you guys had Connecticut and New York plates. I live closer to NYC and drive a xj. Where did you guys go?

It's the damn leaf springs!
Wow fast doesn't get you up. I bet he sold it when he got back home.
🤣

yj needed track bar and tie rods detached i think. and Tires
I see NY plates, and other one which was blue, is this in NY? ( upstate)
the stock axles are fine unless you jump or from my understanding run locked 35's with 35's but in stock form probably won't break.

@@thomashalley7258 or just do a super 35
Camera man calls him WEAK.
Yeah, you go and do it yourself, Hero!
I like that orange red yj. very clean

Haha I'm solo too...no friends lmao
Just get a winch...Will become your new off road bff lol.
So the silver TJ has a Ford 8.8 in the rear and a Dana 30 up front?
yes, it's an HP Dana 30 from an XJ. He now has a wagoneer dana44 up front and is on 38" tires on a 2" lift with long travel shocks.
i have a wrangler yj laredo 4.0L high output that is 100% stock and has a rear LSD do you know if all yj come with a rear lsd because the one on the video doesn't look like it has one ??
12Achilleas his def didnt have LSD.
+12Achilleas My 89 yj has front axle lsd....
hi guys whats the benefit of the up side down shocks??
nothing
Some people just do not understand
good spirit, love it!
lotta weight in that yj

Had the same set up with a 350 sbc Dana 35 open diff and never had issues. Have upgraded to 8.8 since, to utilize a locker.
Go team Jeep! haters gonna hate, don't mind them ;)
Everything they tell you about a Dana 35 is true. Difference is, locked vs open carrier. They don’t cope well being locked.
Nice
Open diffs = 2 wheel drive. Add 50psi in tires. Fail.
Brad Hough he made it though, right?
Sum1 needs lockers or at least posi
where is this?
Look at the YJ left front leaf shackle :)
What's the specs on white tj?
Andrew Mcdonald at the time it was on 33s, selectable forward locker, Ford 8.8 rear and Dana 30 front. 2.5” suspension
open diffs thats why intact

2 jeeps (not shown in this video) were there that day and both equipped with winches.
One of them had a warn Jeep on video..but I agree..speed isn't a substitute for a locker
All you need is one jeep with a winch and you are good. Now a winch that mounts to a tow hitch is a real deal.
The skinny pedal will never make up for tires and lockers. Let half the air out of those tires, engage both lockers, and crawl in the lowest gear you've got. This is just sad.
YJ wranglers didn’t come with lockers
True statement. But there is a very good reason most of us add them. :)
He made it cause I prayed for the jeep not to break
My 95 jeep would even struggle at all and it's a manual! These guys are a joke
nicholas Bontkowski if only you could have been there to tutor us in your 4x4 wisdom!
These guys are having fun and not staying home ragging on others on you tube.
Cool vid
Yj guy good job!!!!
very nice buddy
Lmao. I pooped a little. Lmao
AMATEUR DRIVING, WRONG TIRES CAN MESS A GREAT JEEP OFF ROAD!
Adebowale Adesida BFG KM2s are used by many. Tires weren't the issue, lack of locker was
A fine combination, a kids ego / stupidity and daddy's money.
ego sure, stupidity-debatable. Dad's money? You're way off the mark. That dude makes his own cash, builds his own rigs.
If he just had a locker...

jesus I hate seeing this. I am sure that D35 needs work after that
It was painful to watch. That little YJ took a beating.
The video doesn't do that hill justice
It certainly is steeper in person
lol this guy is a good cameraman but a horrible spotter
this is what they really mean when they say highway miles.....garage kept....lol...lmao
That's what jeeps are made for. Not the highway.
"Is there a problem" yeah the stock Yj can't make it 🤣
No es el jeep es el piloto
It was a cool.vid
Air down
That is all driver do not blame that jeep it's not his fault he don't know how to drive
Jessica Smith ppl are underestimating how steep the grade and failing to realize the Jeep has open differentials. Any open diff Jeep is going to have just as much trouble going up as this YJ.
Jeepin*
Get off-road driving lessons that jeep should make it like nothing
Esteban Gallego If it had a locker it would have made it "like nothing". But it had open differentials and therefore it struggled on the hill climb
Lol love it ehhh all the way
