Hi emmymadeinjapan , Thanks for eating my package and in the process, eating Singapore!!! I'm so so pumped seeing your different reactions to the food- I held my breath for a moment there though when you popped the whole sweet prune into your mouth!!! O.o Actually this year marks Singapore's 50th year of independence and it has also been a watershed year for us with the passing of our founding prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Am seriously moved that you got to try Singapore not once, but twice, for the first time this year. Thank you so much for the video! And for those contesting whether the food is Singaporean or Malaysian, please take a chill pill. We were one country after all till our separation in 1965, so obviously our cultures and foods have similar if not identical origins. Just wanted Emmy to try the childhood foods of Singaporeans- let's not start a sociopolitical war of to which country the food belongs to, sit back and enjoy the video!
Personally I find for the dried prune and haw flakes, it is much better to suck on it than to bite directly. Biting will make the intense flavours explode in ur mouth directly which isnt such a good idea.
Hayley Ralph That might have something to do with the fact that many years ago,Singapore was once a British colony before it became an independent country ^^
I love Kaya and always bring home a couple of jars when I visit Singapore. I also actually love that salty plum thingy. I grew up in Hawaii and they were a staple at candy stores. Great episode Emmy!
Refreshing Lime and Sour Plum Drink (Limau Asam Boi or Kat chai suen mui in Chinese)..You can basically find it in most asian hawker stalls (I'm from Malaysia) > dried preserved plum / asam boi x 1 > lime/lemon wedge x 2 - 3 > honey x 1 tbsp > water x 1 cup > ice x few cubes
Oh you poor girl, I feel so bad for you eating the salted prune, but the look on your face...... LOL I laughed so hard, I was tearing up, had to stop video, I laughed so hard.... LOL oh, that was priceless
Also, in the UK we have those 'Fancy Gems' too, except here they're called 'Iced Gems'. :) They're a pretty popular lunch box snacks for kids. When I was little I always used to bite the icing off the top and throw away the biscuit!
Josephine Riani Ah, saving the best part till last? :P I just had no interest in the biscuit as a kid, it was all about the sugar! No wonder my parents were reluctant to give me them...
Hunny8ee As a Singaporean living in the UK I approve this message! :D And I did the exact same thing when I was a kid! I think the Iced/Fancy Gems were brought over with the colonial Brits so I guess we've got you guys to thank for that, at least ;)
Haw is short for Hawthorne, a kind of fruit and used sometimes in Traditional Chinese Medicine since it has some cooling and detoxifying properties. I've never seen the fresh fruit but the dried slices can be used for brewing a delicious drink if you add some sugar, otherwise it's face-scrunching-ly tart. I think majority of it is from China. The Chinese name is shan zha.
I'd love those lemon puffs! Ever since I was a kid I liked lemon frosting on saltines. Also I agree on the salted butter :) As far as toast toppings, I gotta just stick with plain salted butter OR salted butter with a light dusting of sugar and cinnamon.
Kaya: It is basically Coconut, Eggs and Sugar. The Pandan gives it the color. Some uses Corn Syrup or Molasses or around the region use Gula Melaka (Palm Sugar) to give it a darker look. In Singapore, you would have it on toast with Kaya spread and a chunk of cold butter. Personally I like my butter that way and you let the heat of the toast melt the butter. As for salted or un-salted, I would prefer un-salted. Reason being, I get a choice to either add salt or sugar. Fancy Gems: One of my go to snacks when I was younger. It was always a treat.
Seeing fancy gems have just brought back so many memories of when I was little and my mum would take me to this shop where they sold all little biscuits like that. Btw you eating the dried fruit was the best thing ever.
We do eat Kaya on toast with butter. The little coockie with hard sugar topping also a chilehood favorite. Another version of it where the sugar topping is between 2 coockies like a sandwich. Rabina is a source of vitamin c for kids.
I actually grew up with both unsalted and salted butter in my house. my family are bakers and you never back with salted butter. so we only used the unsalted for baking or cooking but used the salted to put on toast or something.
JReeces they're not that tiny. 3.bp.blogspot.com/-PnhNhLA6o60/UPf_Ib5TNxI/AAAAAAAAAgM/YwjvyC7HWgg/s1600/A+Skewer+of+Candied+Hawthorn+Berries.png ^^^Common street/night market food in Taiwan- Tanghulu (fruits-commonly hawthorn berries- with a hard sugar glaze).
DrBrennan hahaha i love those ...glazed with sugar and super sour berries on the inside. Analogous to a candy apple but simpler, less sweet and really really nostalgic
Emmy! You should do a kitchen tour! I'm curious where and what you keep in all your cubbies and fridge hahah you must have lots of amazing foods stored from all over !
I remember eating haw flakes as a kid. Like you, it was like a candy substitute for me! It was definitely one of my favorite sweet treats! My favorite topping on is yogurt with bananas!
Hello from Singapore! So happy when i see 'Singaporean treats' on my sub list. & CEL YOU ARE AWESOME, these are defo real Singaporean treats! Fancy gems, little mantous, hawflakes... all my favorite when i was a kid, brings back a whole lot of memories. Emmy you should try the kaya toast with salted butter, or peanut butter!
Haha. Whenever u eat something from Singapore , u basically eat things that Malaysian kids always eat too xD ive ate most of the snacks in my childhood :3 oh well, we are neighbors so its not suprising at all if we ate the same snacks or food ~ :333
I love black currant! In Sweden it is super popular flavour both in taffies and lemonades. It's like more common that you own a black currant bush if you own a yard then if you don't own one. Fun to know that Asia likes it as well!
Those Ribena look really good. On my toast, I like to put straight up fruit jam on it. For darker toast, I like blackberry jam; for lighter toast, I like strawberry jam. If I'm feeling really fancy, I butter the toast before I put jam on it.
I was thinking about those sandwiches that you make using the patterns from Japan. You said something about needing really thick bread. Well I went to Panara a couple of days ago and they slice bread really thick like that if you ask. This way you can get whole grain or something healthier than Texas Toast. I though I should share.
I grew up in Hong Kong and drank so much Ribena when there. And those pastilles? Some of my favourites! I could pretty much taste them in my mind as soon as you shared them on the video. YUM!
with the kaya, the butter should be a cold slice about maybe a 2-3mm and sandwiched by the kaya and the toast, not incredibly thick but the sensation of the cold butter and the warm toast and spread has always been one of the joys of kaya toast for me.
my go to toast topping is nutella sprinkled with a mixture of chia and flax seed and vanilla almond granola. its not overly sweet and super yummy and filling.
I'm from Spain and I LOVE black currant anything :D It's my absolute favourite. Drinks, sweets (candy), pies etc, it's scrumptious. Americans are really missing out!
My favourite toast is just decent bread and lots of butter. But sometimes I'll add hotsauce to make buffalo toast, and if I want a more substantial snack I'll make pizza toast; this can vary in levels of fanciness but the essence is toast, some form of tomato layer (tomato sauce, red pesto, tomato puree, tomato soup) put it back under the grill to dry out a bit so it's not too soggy (1-2 min) then top with cheese. You can add herbs and veggies and whatever else if you want to make a proper mini pizza, it's super fast 5-10 mins in total depending on how fancy you go, some toppings will require a bit more cooking. (Be careful to bring the tomato layer out to the very edges or they'll burn)
I learned a valuable lesson about Li Hing Muy when I was a teenager and a friend brought a bag back from 3 Doors Down in Hawaii. Never open the bag when you are really really hungry. The results will be quite "explosive"! :) It was a bag of just the skins by the way.
is it only me or other malaysian/singaporean/indonesian or anyone who can feel the sourness before she puts the prunes in her mouth? Like i wanted to eat that sour things too. Especially mango... A sour mango can make me drool * saliva generated more and stores up in mouth*
Those Fancy Gems are a lot similar to what we have here in the UK called Ice Gems. Exact look alike.. Little cookies with a star of different coloured icing on top.. but the ones here in the UK are a little bit smaller and less well presented in their packaging.
We have that fancy gems aswell in Indonesia, they are always sold per gram though, from the place that sell snacks inside glass-display. I always eat the biscuit first and save the icing for last, im sure im not alone in this
I love salty butter too! That lemon puff is my favorite biscuits. Omg, mamee monster is like my childhood snacks. Almost all of that stuff you can get from Malaysia:D
Hmm... my go-to toast as a kid was like dessert! Loaded on the butter and then sprinkled it with a dash of both sugar and cinnamon. Divinity. My definite favorite now is a drizzle of olive oil or coconut butter, avocado and cracked pepper. Yum. :) When I do make the dessert toast these days (not all too often) I swap the butter with coconut butter. But that's because I'm vegan!
haw is a fruit made for helping digestion i think... we use it in tea too... floral tea i guess. kaya is to be spread on a plain toast and butter on the other. this is a typical breakfast in singapore. we pair it with 2 half boiled eggs (eggs u put into hot water in a container and wait for ard 7-8 minute, not boiling them in stove) and hot beverage. Glad that u like them :P
Emmy I just want to thank you for eating my country food and i hope you will continue reviewing food.I hope many youtubers such as yourself would review our little red dots food
ahh those preserved plums! they were my one of my childhood favourites, but they aren't for everyone, especially those who are new to them. haw flakes are another childhood favourite of mine. i used to eat them all the time. also, those gemmed biscuits are also available in the uk :D i haven't had them in years, but i used to bite the gems off first before eating the biscuits.
A strange combo, but i really like toast with peanut butter, and orange juice to drink with it. I'll take a bite of toast and a sip of orange juice. The flavors, for me, really go well together. I love it
Where can you buy Kaya spread in Ontario, Canada? same with Fancy Gems, I would guess Asian food stores. And I got haw flakes, got them from my friend. From what I read about them you have haw flakes with tea
Omg haw flakes hahah i remember playing with those flakes whe we where young where one of my cousins would pretend to be a priest and then we would line up for "communion" 😅😅
favorite toast topping would have to be peanut butter...it gets all melty and yum. Second favorite would have to be butter and either grape or strawberry jam/jelly :)
Hi Emmy !! The brown sauce goes particularly well with boiled or scrambled eggs on toast. Try it and tell me what you think.
there was an english biscuit exactly like lemon puff whose name I have forgotten. Iced gems are also a UK/ireland thing. Some of these treats must be holdovers from the british days.
Pretty sure Haw is Hawthorne. I had some Hawthorne maltose sweets from a local Chinese supermarket the other week, it wasn't particularly good. But blackcurrant is excellent, nice and sharp. :)
We have fancy gems in my country too I don't remember whats its called though and haw flakes I love those my aunt gave us some of those and my cousins and I really love them😊😊😊😍😍😍
