I'm one of those people that thinks Gestalt/Replicant's soundtrack is superior to Automata's but that's comparing masterpieces to masterpieces.

I'll often think I prefer Replicant's OST. Then I'll listen to Automata's OST again and find it better. Then I'll listen to Replicant's OST again and find it better... There's just so much incredible stuff in both that I can only agree with you. I love both, they each have their particularities that make them unique, but I can't manage to make a playlist out of pieces from only one of the two games, kind of like what Jesse said.

I think individual tracks of Nier 1's ost are better but Automata is great with how the tracks change. Don't hugely remember much of the rest of the game, or the tracks, but the carnival and how it layers depending on where you are within it is one thing that has stuck with me so far along the line.

I personally think automatas music is, as a general rule of thumb, better on a technical level, while the preference for "how it sounds" is still of course very devisive and personal.
Automatas music is structured to play dynamically and therefore is more layered and loosely structured so that the songs can break apart and be built back up at a moments notice during the game.
I think the best way I can phrase the games objective differences in "how good they sound", is automata has better instrumentals due to how well integrated and recorded they HAVE to be in order for the music to work as well as it does dynamically.
However since replicant isn't dynamic, i think the songs are structured to be more individual and more standout. More catchy I should say. They gotta have a jingle to them to make up for being more basic.
Best examples I can possibly give
Automatas desert music vs replicants desert music
And automatas factory music vs replicants factory music.
Automatas don't stick in your head as much do they? They lack a jingle or tune to get stuck in your skull. Replicants are catchier to you aren't they right?
But, automatas music is clearly "better" when comparing these songs. More impressive might be the better word.
Memories of dust just destroys lost forest as a song in terms of instrumentation, vocals, pacing, story telling, atmosphere, orchestration.
Same for wretched weaponry vs wretched automatons.
Replicant doesn't have the same level of sheer music quality and orchestration, but it has catchy tunes and jingles because it has to be much simpler. It of course has some complex music too, but it simply didn't have the budget to be as grand and great as automatas. So it had to become catchy to stick in the players head.
Automata sounds "better", replicant sounds "catchier", but thr preference of course remains subjective.
I'd describe automatas music as being a feast for the ears and brain while listening, and replicants as being something your brain and ears won't be able to easily let go of once they've caught the sound of the songs.
Personally I like automatas music more. But I have no trouble seeing other people's preference for replicants music, especially if they played it first before automata.
Because let's be real here, music preference between these 2 games usually comes down to which one you played first.

This is absolutely one of my favorite tracks of this OST. I remember when I first entered the area where this music plays, and heard the mechanical clanging. I thought it was just atmospheric noise, but as more sounds started layering over I quickly realized it was actually a percussion. I stopped dead in my tracks and just marveled as the song kept building upon itself. I will never forget that.

It is probably my favourite OST in NieR as a whole. It's so unique, so good, even after grinding dozens of hours for the platinum, I still love both versions of this song, even tho this one is better imo

The track that first got me into NieR, the track that convinced me that this game was going to be something special, and one of my most favorite tracks in all of video games. If someone didn't already beat me to it, I would have requested this myself. The way the metallic percussion and Emi's singing plays off each other just brings me into another realm entirely.

Both soundtracks are incredible, but I feel like Automata has a bigger emphasis on big sounds, whether through Chorus or general feel of a piece, while Replicant tends to feel more intimate, with solos and less "processed" music.

I'm one of those people who prefer Nier's music to Automata's. Not just the music, I prefer the characters and the story more.
Don't get me wrong. Nier:Automata is one of my favorite games, but Nier is something else.
Nier was a game that took a lot of risks in its music, story, and characters. It was a game that couldn't be pigeonholed into a specific genre. A search for identity as a game. A game where no one is right and no one is wrong. It held nothing back and paid the price of being unique. It was heavily criticized when it first came out, so many people missed out on playing it and enjoying its music.
Thanks to Automata, the Nier series is starting to get the recognition and respect it deserves. Automata had excellent reviews and promotion, for the first time people were allowed to speak highly of a game by Yoko Taro and his team.
I think both Nier and Automata are great games with a story and soundtrack that will stay with you forever.
I can only hope that the Drakengard series starts getting some love too.

I want them to remake the Drakengard games, but also it frightens me. I don't want them to change the story or characters to make them more acceptable. These characters are not good boys and girls, they are very fu.... .. people. I want better graphics, combat system and gameplay in general but with the same story and characters arc. They could also add a few of the short stories that were left out.

So the thing about Nier Automata and Replicant OST difference is....Automata has a higher quality..."Spectrum" while Replicant has a more unique sound by itself, also YEAH, the gameplay. PLS play the Remake of Nier, I'll miss Papa Nier from the OG, but the gameplay is HEAVILY improved.

    • @trevorveillette8415
      @trevorveillette8415 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thinking about it now, I think replicants music stands by itself more because there's more character themes and more repetitive music.
Kaine, emil, shadowlord, song of the ancients, yonah.
There's no songs in automata named after the characters except pascal. It's all so much less personal and so much more grand and larger than life (which I like)
And replicant has lower quality orchestration so it's rhythm and instruments are more repetitive, so this makes then get stuck in your head easier.
Like, automatas desert theme is so astounding it sounds straight out of a movie. Best desert song I've ever heard and one of the most atmospheric songs I've ever heard.
Replicants is repetitive as fuck. But it's catchy, and because of that it's easier to remember than automatas desert theme.

NieR Automata's soundtrack is grand and great, but I really love the more experimental sounds of Replicant. Every area brings a different atmosphere yet everything sounds cohesive and unique.
Also this is song could be called a "prequel" to Wretched Weaponry from Automata, using the same eletronic and metallic sounds but with different approaches.
(Personal recommendation: The Lost Forest, original AND ver 1.22. Both are great but their progression are different. The acoustic guitar is impeccable. )

I prefer automata's soundtrack to replicant's (automata's is my favorite ost I've ever heard so I prefer it to any other soundtrack, not just replicant's). But I don't object to anyone preferring replicant, because there are some fabulous songs.
I do think automata objectively implemented its soundtrack better. There are more versions of each song so they can make a song become ambient background, mood-setting music at times and become more dynamic or add vocals when they want to ramp things up. I found that it mostly kept the songs fresh. In replicant, I found myself getting tired of some songs (like this one especially or hills of radiant wind) even though I initially loved them.

I GREATLY prefer Replicant’s soundtrack over Automata’s, and also as a game even if it’s clunky and weird. Actually, it is because of those same reasons. I must admit I came into NieR completely blind years before Automata was even announced so the impact it had on me is impossible to put into words. I may be very biased, but I really did not like the remake, the soundtrack even less so.
