Bummer. Everything works except the DreamPi... the software doesn't like my network so I'm a bit lost on what to do. I'll keep searching. 5-year later edit: I used a different SD card.
@@JiltedValkyrie From my experience, it's been finnicky. I had to mess with stuff down to messing with regular linux config files over SSH just to get it to work. I believe I had to disable IPv6 and force a static address on wlan0 on Raspberry itself. Also, try a 2.4GHz network. I had the least luck with 5GHz networks on my Pi 3. Once you can ping Google, you're good to go. If worst comes to worst, just reflash the DreamPi OS and try again. Just make sure to build a voltage inducer lol Took me forever to figure out why my Dreamcast kept saying "No dial tone" lol

I’ve been thinking about bringing my Dreamcast online to download the skins for the Sonic Adventure games. I was planning on buying an expensive Broadband adapter, but this video may have very well saved me a whole bunch of money. I hope to get a Raspberry Pi and SD card soon.

I would love to do this with my Dreamcast sometime except DreamPi still has too much steps and requirements. As time goes on I am noticing that connecting your Dreamcast to online gaming is becoming less complicated, less expensive, and working better than before. Hopefully sometime in the future when DreamPi updates more, getting your Dreamcast to online gaming will have less steps, less requirements, less expensive, and have more players. I look forward to more updates how to connect your Dreamcast to DreamPi because I really want to start playing some online gaming on my favorite game console

I doubt that, the secondary market for games can be rough but i can get a console for 40$ and actually have a second for high availability :) I reached out this week to order a DreamPi and cant wait to join a community of people who game and who are smart enough to go through the modest number of steps to get their games online. I'll be glad to help you figure it out once I get it working for myself Benjamin, but for the cost of a season pass for cod or some other cash grabbing soulless EA product you could join a whole console generation online, to me its an easy sell.
Actually the number of usable dreamcasts is going up with products such as the GDEMU becoming affordable. And i agree with the recent comment. Its hard to sell me on new cash grab games but will i pay $140 for a copy of puyo puyo fever? Hell yes i would! And have! The game looks like candy and i wanna eat it!
Additionally it is absolutly possible to play via an emulator, i have met plenty of people playing on the PSO sylverant server from their PC or android.

One nitpick though, because I'm that much of a dork, I don't think the Pi should be referred to as a "minicomputer." Minicomputers actually predate microcomputers, which is what most of us have in our homes, and I believe have more in common with mainframes. I think the Pi should be referred to as either a micro or possibly nano-computer, but I'm not 100% sure. Here's what Google says: "Nanocomputer refers to a computer smaller than the microcomputer, which is smaller than the minicomputer." Thoughts?
We call regular desktop computers "computers". It makes sense to call the Pi a mini computer in today's terminology... it's literally just a small-sized computer. Mainframes and actual minicomputers from back in the day are no longer around for regular users.
Is there a diagram or schematic of assembling the all-in-one modem? I have only seem diagrams of the line voltage inducer using a battery or voltage transducer and usb power. I prefer this design using less cables.
None of the usb modems in the video even exist anymore. But there are many others with different model numbers. Can you go into detail on what will work these days?

I’m online!! It all worked! Get the all in one modem from Dreamcast Live. I used a Pi3 MB and followed the steps. My Internet settings were a little different than the one from the video, and I needed to use Web Browser 2.0 or newer. The 1.0 disc was not working for me.

Just wondering if i can burn the relevant files to my sd card that ive also installed my raspberry pi basic operating system files on,because the pi is connected to a 7" screen and i would like to see the operating pi screen running too.is that an option? Is there an equivalent method using the Dreamcast broadband adaptor? Furthermore, do the recommendations and standards presented here apply to PAL DC's with UK electrical standards?
The broadband adapter is a completely different connection method. It's only supported by 4 out the 14 games that are currently online so it's not really worth the hefty price. The line voltage inducer required is different for NTSC-U/J and PAL Dreamcasts but everything else is the same otherwise.
Hello! Great tutorial! I have already bought a dial-up modem has indicated in the kazade webpage, it's just like yours. Altough, even though I have configured the Dreampi distro and built my own line voltage simulator, the second led on the modem doesn't turn up. Do you have any idea of what it could possibly be?
I'd say the modem isn't compatible. Someone else had the same issue and said they bought the one linked to from Kazade's website. Unfortunately the seller probably doesn't even send out the same one every time. They look exactly the same on the outside but the internals can be different. This is why I always recommend going with the Dell NW147 as it will always work.
the steps for connecting your dreampi to the tv/monitor is not necessary assuming you have access to the router (which you probably want due to the DMZ settings later in the video). your router should be able to list all connected devices and their IPs. simply try and connect your DreamPi on/off and see which IP appears/disappears and you'll know which one is correct.
having sn issue with raspberry pi4, saying my firmware is out of date afer installing card with dreampi image on it. i've used so many different cards, brand new, and different programs to flash. still says start 4elf not supported
I know this video is 2 years old, however I just came across this as I have been slowly getting back into retro gaming. I finally restored my PS1 and got PSIO in it as well as a bit of a hack job of using a 2nd PSIO unit on a bit of a hack job with a PSOne. Now that I got my PS1’s sorted I saw the DC community alive and well with a lot of great things. I’m trying to build an ‘ultimate Dreamcast’ of sorts with a GDEMU clone (wish I didn’t have to wait months and months for the legit version) - i already have a DCHDMI pre-ordered so waiting for that to be shipped. One of the very last things I’m looking at is getting it to go online again. Would DreamPi still work with my Dreamcast using the BBA?

I'm at a loss here. I have tried for so long to get the SD card to boot on my Raspberry Pi, but I always just end up with the rainbow colored screen. I honestly don't know what more I can try. In this video everything is so seamless, but it doesn't seem to be working that way. I have a Pi4 and am downloading the Pi4 (though I've tried literally anything) and have mounted the image file with win32 and several other programs, and no matter what I do, it will not boot. I cannot explain the frustration, and there seems to be no help online. Basically, the issues keep saying recovery4.elf not found (6) recovery.elf not found (6)
Will this work with other things aside from a Dreamcast? For example could I use this as a dial-up isp for one of my vintage Macintosh’s without an ethernet card?
Maybe possible, but the DreamPI is the ISP (for example) that provides internet to the Dreamcast Modem, so everything that Dreamcast ouput the DreamPI will route to the internet. So... I THINK!!!!!!! if you manage to make the DreamPI as a linux router (which is possible), DreamPI would manage your Dreamcast output but not with the USB Modem, should be tutorials over the internet, but well... I have the modem.
Hi, James from UK. I want to buy Raspberry Pi 3 but do I really need dual fans and an on off switch, or is it overkill if I just want to use raspian or dreampi?
Fans are completely unnecessary for something like this. If you were using it for emulators or something more demanding like that then maybe. A power switch is nice to have though. Saves wear on the power port from pulling the cable in and out all the time.
what is the speed like with this compared to the broadband adapter? if i got this to play quake 3 would someone who has the broadband adapter have an advantage with significantly lower ping? very interested in this product either way.
Yes, Quake is really the only game where the broadband adapter gives an advantage. In fact, it's the one game I use my broadband adapter with. Hehe. I did play with DreamPi once and it wasn't terrible. But yeah, it's a slight advantage using the BBA.
This looks cool and I want to try it, but is it really a good idea to have a Pi on your network thru DMZ? Especially since we know how easy they are to exploit SMB with.

I can’t connect to the Starlancer server (gamespy I think). Is it something I am missing ? I set the dmz in my router with the Dreamcast ip but still can’t connect with that game
i asked because i couldnt connect to the quake 3 master server after the dc-talk dns changed. I set it to the new dc-talk dns and it is connecting to master server fine now

Hi ! I just used my PAL dreamcast and the pi 3B+ with dreampi 1.7 and quake III arena online. You need that cable of the Dreamcast Live Shop called "PAL USB Line Voltage Inducer" + a DELL NW147 (which is a 56 K USB Modem). Works fine here... then simply follow this instruction. About 1 min till you connect online ;-) My dreamcast has a modchip so I can play the NTSC Version of Quake III Arena - Maybe this helps you a little bit.
I click on the Mac OS lnk, and it has GENERAL information about preparing a Raspberry Pi image on a Mac. The instruciotns were confusing, and diddn’t deal specifically with DreamPi. A few thinks happend since you posted the video. There are 2 free programs that deal with Macintosh/Pi relations. One is Called Etcher of Mac, the Other is Apple PI Baker. i treid all 3 methods, and all 3 ways, the HDMI output to a monitor is pure black, and the Modem can’t deterct a Dial tone. I even founda secodn Dreamcast DIalUp modem, in case it suddenly stopped working. The second Modem didnd’t work after the 1.6-> 1.7 update. I would like you to make a Video on Flashing the DreamPi Image using Mcintosh and Linux. I don’t understand the first thing about Pi and Just want to learn enough to flash any updates on just DreamPi.

I just updated my DreamPi and now i cannot get online anymore. I keep getting a "Not running dhcpcd because /etc/network/interfaces" along with "Failed to start dhcpcd on all interfaces". When I tried to do the manual fix, i cannot because its blank and it says /dreampi not found.
The dreamcast now website keeps saying I am offline after a few minutes of entering my dreampi ip address. This is a problem as nobody will know I am online unless they were there in the first few minutes of me pressing detect. Any ideas?
Hi there, I've followed the instructions up until turning the Pi on, when I do I get a solid red light and a green light that flashes 8 times. I flashed the SD card with raspbian, and that booted successfully, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. Do you have any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks.
AH ok. Well that definitely means DreamPi isn't booting. I'm honestly not sure what to try. I mean, you say you flashed Raspbian fine (which is what DreamPi is based on). Try searching Google for "Raspberry Pi Rainbow Screen". You might find a solution from others who have had that issue.
Hi again. I fixed the issue, I thought I'd let you know how to fix it in case others have the same problem. I was getting 8 flashes from the ACT light (4 slow flashes followed by 4 quick flashes,) indicating that the SDRAM was not recognised. It turned out the firmware contained within the dreampi image was not compatible with my Pi, (it is a later hardware revision of the Raspberry Pi 2 B) I had to replace the bootcode.bin and start.elf files in the dreampi image with the ones from the newest raspbian release. It worked perfectly after that.
I've hooked up my Raspberry Pi to my monitor just to test it before using it on my Dreamcast. I have it plugged into an HDMI monitor, ethernet cable plugged into its port to ensure an internet connection and when I plug the power supply, it gives me the rainbow splash screen. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and followed your directions on imaging the DreamPi file with the Win32 disk imager and followed the instructions that came with my Raspberry Pi, don't see any sign of life to it (Doesn’t show me the booting prompt). One thing I don’t have is the USB modem, I will buy it if I at least see the prompt and everything works. Any troubleshooting suggestions?
I don't believe the current DreamPi version works with the 3 B+. I've heard of others having the same issue. The rainbow screen means there's a problem with the image (incompatibility in your case most likely).

What's the issue? the port forwarding? the dmz? if your just playing pso then you dont need to dmz or anything
You need a hardmodem, a softmodem won't work but looks just like the modem used in this video, buy the Dell NW147 on ebay -- should help!

I know this video is 2 years old, however I just came across this as I have been slowly getting back into retro gaming. I finally restored my PS1 and got PSIO in it as well as a bit of a hack job of using a 2nd PSIO unit on a bit of a hack job with a PSOne.
Now that I got my PS1’s sorted I saw the DC community alive and well with a lot of great things. I’m trying to build an ‘ultimate Dreamcast’ of sorts with a GDEMU clone (wish I didn’t have to wait months and months for the legit version) - i already have a DCHDMI pre-ordered so waiting for that to be shipped. One of the very last things I’m looking at is getting it to go online again.
Would DreamPi still work with my Dreamcast using the BBA?
Does this image work for other SBCs like tinker board ? If not is it open source it can recompile for other SBCs
Can this be configured to work with the GDEMU, from an SD card?

i commit the mistake of buying 2 of those which only 1 light is turned on when it should be both lights, i also did a line voltage inducer but had the same results.
how can one tell which are lenovo/ dell nw147 equivalents when all others do look alike? :(

I'm at a loss here. I have tried for so long to get the SD card to boot on my Raspberry Pi, but I always just end up with the rainbow colored screen. I honestly don't know what more I can try. In this video everything is so seamless, but it doesn't seem to be working that way. I have a Pi4 and am downloading the Pi4 (though I've tried literally anything) and have mounted the image file with win32 and several other programs, and no matter what I do, it will not boot. I cannot explain the frustration, and there seems to be no help online. Basically, the issues keep saying

Which web browser should I use with a PAL DC?
So my ip address isn't showing up when I boot up the pi. Its just a random set of letters and numbers separated by colons. Need some help.

Why there is no need to set-up DNS on Web Browser?
DreamPi automatically directs you to the correct DNS server. It doesn't really matter what you put in on the Dreamcast as it will be ignored.

Maybe possible, but the DreamPI is the ISP (for example) that provides internet to the Dreamcast Modem, so everything that Dreamcast ouput the DreamPI will route to the internet. So... I THINK!!!!!!! if you manage to make the DreamPI as a linux router (which is possible), DreamPI would manage your Dreamcast output but not with the USB Modem, should be tutorials over the internet, but well... I have the modem.
Hi, James from UK. I want to buy Raspberry Pi 3 but do I really need dual fans and an on off switch, or is it overkill if I just want to use raspian or dreampi?
Fans are completely unnecessary for something like this. If you were using it for emulators or something more demanding like that then maybe. A power switch is nice to have though. Saves wear on the power port from pulling the cable in and out all the time.
what is the speed like with this compared to the broadband adapter? if i got this to play quake 3 would someone who has the broadband adapter have an advantage with significantly lower ping? very interested in this product either way.
Yes, Quake is really the only game where the broadband adapter gives an advantage. In fact, it's the one game I use my broadband adapter with. Hehe. I did play with DreamPi once and it wasn't terrible. But yeah, it's a slight advantage using the BBA.
twerkdaddy69 with good qos settings i find my dreampi works nearly as well as bba :) At least in my experiences
This looks cool and I want to try it, but is it really a good idea to have a Pi on your network thru DMZ? Especially since we know how easy they are to exploit SMB with.
You're DMZing the Dreamcast's IP. No one is going to hack into your Dreamcast. :-P
My bad, I was thinking you DMZ the Pi's IP, not the Dreamcast. I'd still run it on separate VLAN to be safer, just in case of any bot port scanners.

You need to enable the on-screen keyboard in the settings.

Got everything up and running! only problem is Dreamcast now won't detect my ip address taken from inet Raspberry Pi, can't change my name or photo, any ideas? Besides that games work online.

Is the Dreamcast's IP address always the .98 address? So this is different than the DreamPi's IP address?
Yes it is always .98
If you are using netgear shield go to wan setup and enable Default DMZ and change the Last digits on bottom to .98 and click apply
I can’t connect to the Starlancer server (gamespy I think). Is it something I am missing ? I set the dmz in my router with the Dreamcast ip but still can’t connect with that game
Nothing special is required to connect to the server. Not sure why you wouldn't be able to connect to it.
hi. did the dns change for dc talk? do i need to change my dreampi dns settjngs or just keep at all zeros?
Dreampi takes care of the DNS server so you don't need to change anything.
i asked because i couldnt connect to the quake 3 master server after the dc-talk dns changed. I set it to the new dc-talk dns and it is connecting to master server fine now
Yeah, that's because the DreamPi DNS server needs to be updated with DC-Talk's new IP. It should be updated soon.

No, not yet anyway. You can play the games listed here under "Online": www.dreamcastlive.net/games.html. No one has been able to get any of the Japanese games back online as of yet. Maybe in the future.

Hi ! I just used my PAL dreamcast and the pi 3B+ with dreampi 1.7 and quake III arena online. You need that cable of the Dreamcast Live Shop called "PAL USB Line Voltage Inducer" + a DELL NW147 (which is a 56 K USB Modem). Works fine here... then simply follow this instruction. About 1 min till you connect online ;-) My dreamcast has a modchip so I can play the NTSC Version of Quake III Arena - Maybe this helps you a little bit.

I click on the Mac OS lnk, and it has GENERAL information about preparing a Raspberry Pi image on a Mac. The instruciotns were confusing, and diddn’t deal specifically with DreamPi.
A few thinks happend since you posted the video. There are 2 free programs that deal with Macintosh/Pi relations. One is Called Etcher of Mac, the Other is Apple PI Baker. i treid all 3 methods, and all 3 ways, the HDMI output to a monitor is pure black, and the Modem can’t deterct a Dial tone. I even founda secodn Dreamcast DIalUp modem, in case it suddenly stopped working. The second Modem didnd’t work after the 1.6-> 1.7 update.
I would like you to make a Video on Flashing the DreamPi Image using Mcintosh and Linux. I don’t understand the first thing about Pi and Just want to learn enough to flash any updates on just DreamPi.

I just updated my DreamPi and now i cannot get online anymore. I keep getting a "Not running dhcpcd because /etc/network/interfaces" along with "Failed to start dhcpcd on all interfaces". When I tried to do the manual fix, i cannot because its blank and it says /dreampi not found.
Did you ever get it up and running? just tried myself with an NTSC dc and Pi 3b+ and getting same error

The dreamcast now website keeps saying I am offline after a few minutes of entering my dreampi ip address.
This is a problem as nobody will know I am online unless they were there in the first few minutes of me pressing detect.
Any ideas?

Hi there, I've followed the instructions up until turning the Pi on, when I do I get a solid red light and a green light that flashes 8 times. I flashed the SD card with raspbian, and that booted successfully, so I don't think it's a hardware problem. Do you have any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks.
That's what you would normally see on the Pi. What's the problem? lol
I get a rainbow screen when plugged into a monitor :P even though i'm pretty sure I loaded the dreampi software onto the sd card correctly.
AH ok. Well that definitely means DreamPi isn't booting. I'm honestly not sure what to try. I mean, you say you flashed Raspbian fine (which is what DreamPi is based on). Try searching Google for "Raspberry Pi Rainbow Screen". You might find a solution from others who have had that issue.

Hi again. I fixed the issue, I thought I'd let you know how to fix it in case others have the same problem. I was getting 8 flashes from the ACT light (4 slow flashes followed by 4 quick flashes,) indicating that the SDRAM was not recognised. It turned out the firmware contained within the dreampi image was not compatible with my Pi, (it is a later hardware revision of the Raspberry Pi 2 B) I had to replace the bootcode.bin and start.elf files in the dreampi image with the ones from the newest raspbian release. It worked perfectly after that.
I've hooked up my Raspberry Pi to my monitor just to test it before using it on my Dreamcast. I have it plugged into an HDMI monitor, ethernet cable plugged into its port to ensure an internet connection and when I plug the power supply, it gives me the rainbow splash screen. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and followed your directions on imaging the DreamPi file with the Win32 disk imager and followed the instructions that came with my Raspberry Pi, don't see any sign of life to it (Doesn’t show me the booting prompt). One thing I don’t have is the USB modem, I will buy it if I at least see the prompt and everything works. Any troubleshooting suggestions?
I don't believe the current DreamPi version works with the 3 B+. I've heard of others having the same issue. The rainbow screen means there's a problem with the image (incompatibility in your case most likely).

If you're upgrading, yes, just overwrite the SD card.
In the site, the USB modem only says "NTSC-U" and "NTSC-J".
What about PAL Dreamcasts?
PAL Dreamcasts need the line voltage inducer cable in addition to a compatible USB modem like the Dell NW147.
So the USB modem on the store, only works for NA and J regions? That sucks xD
