    So I did this myself with black permatex silicone. Came out perfect no more leaks in a bad rain storm last night!

      Glad to hear it! As always appreciate your time and keep commenting! If I did it again, I'd use black not "clear" myself.

    The inner tube patch looks pretty good overall. Most people probably wouldn't notice.

    Owner of a 1997 BMW Z3 1.9L in dark blue here. This is extremely useful. I was so frustrated by the leaking top that I drilled holes in to the floor to let the water drain. Despite not having gaps in my rubber trim, it leaks. I’m thinking it needs to be thicker to seal tightly.
    Thank you for this videos Mark. Owning a 24 year old German car isn’t easy, but the Z3 is one of the best handling car’s ever made. I always think if i win the lotto about swapping it for a brand new hardtop Miata, but honestly if that ever happened I’ll still keep the little German troublemaker.
    wish me luck, tomorrow I’m replacing the whole drive shaft (bad u-joints), drive shaft bearing, flex disc, motor mounts, tranny mounts, engine oil, oil filter, brake/clutch fluid, differential fluid, fuel filter, and aft exhaust hangar. I’m at 151XXX miles, let’s see if this 24 year old M44B19 can go up to 234,000 miles (the record for my last Honda Civic).

      Wow! Good luck with all of that! Those are all on my to do list; makes sense to hit them all at once. Harder for me as it is my daily. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      You got this mine is on 286,000 getting close to the 300k and the only light on my dash is the check engine because someone stole my catalytic converter
      I'm 16 and my mom and dad passed it down to me I loved learning how to drive in it and work on it.

    Solution for clear glob of silicon sealant --- when dry take a black permanent marker and color it black ... easy fix

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny I've done that for many things over the years and it never occurred to me! Thanks!

  • @MossGrisman

    This might not be the most water tight solution, but I used air conditioner exhaust hose insulation tape (basically black foam with adhesive backing). This is potentially just a temp fix before I can get a silicone based sealer. At least it looks clean. I think it will work 😅.

    Mine leaks there and middle of the side wonder where it bends. BMW replaced my weather stripping until it was out of warranty then told me it's the nature of the beast. For the last 18+ years I have just garage kept it and sun day drive it.

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine has a gap there too. There is a lot of "nature of the beast" things about the Z3. You should be able to use the same technique where two weather stripping pieces come together (permatex plus inner tube).

    • @HorsepowerHouse
      @HorsepowerHouse ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally incorrect. Fix it, and it won't leak. Period.

    Why not just use black sealant in the first place

    • @MomentofZed
      @MomentofZed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I'm a dummy! Seriously, I felt like a dummy after it was "not so clear". Hence the extra video. With that said, I think the patch is still a cleaner look. Thanks for watching!
