for those buying cheap analog replacements on ebay like me, keep the old sensors and swap it with the new analog. its the gray/black things attached to the sides with 3 prongs. pinch the sides and it comes right off.
Be thankful your stick came off so easily. I've been having an issue with mine and need to remove it, but the damn thing is desoldered as much as I can manage using the same tools you have. I'll have to use flux to get the solder that's flowed down the pegs; at least I hope it'll work.
Thanks for the video - I didn't even know you could get replacement thumbsticks to begin with. My controllers work great now. The parts are real cheap and if your going to go through all the trouble to tear down the controller and setup a solder station to fix it you might as well do both sticks and do all the bad controllers at the same time. And order an extra part or 2 just in case you get a bad one. Test before you cleanup
great tutorial man. thanks! i did the LB/RB repair in one controller, but in another controller, i tried to do it and i got a lifted pad. do you know if i can make a jumper and at which point?
Seems easy enough! Good tutorial man! Only one question though. I'm new to soldering so I'm not exactly sure how to clean the iron. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks.
also another alternative is getting a "solder sucker" which is a little plastic tube with a pump trigger that when you push the button it will suck up the solder those go for around $2 - $5, best way is to have your soldering iron heat it up with 1 hand and immediatly use the other hand to suck it up at the same time
Awesome man! I have had most of my controllers go to drifting... Not cool when you're sneaking or anything. I'll try fixing this way. I second lionel jones, where did you get desoldering part??
Helped me out a lot im going to re do my halo 3 limited edition controller. Do the bumpers come with the case and everything or do you have to order the bumpers by their own. Just like the joystick replacement.
Goods looks on the video, bruh. I just got the analog sensors I ordered off ebay a few moments ago, and got it installed in under 1hr without any issues following this video.
When desoldering the thumb sticks, sometimes the old solder doesn't allow the TS motors to slide out easily. I like to use a little flux to help the old solder pool onto the solder points...which then makes it easier for the TS motors to slide out. Just becareful not to apply to much heat to the BOARD or you can damage/suck off the solder pads (making your controller garbage)
I was about to throw out my controller before I found this video. I'm now gonna order a 'solder sucker' & a spare RB button, I'm a bit of an amateur with a soldering iron but I should be able to manage it! I think my RB button got damaged when a can of cider (Hard cider?) leaked in my backpack, resulting in me having to clean the entire circuit board haha. It worked for awhile after that but I think it must have gotten in to areas I couldn't easily clean and being acidic and all it's finally finished it off. Good video, hopefully it'll save me a bit of cash. Thanks!
Hi, Would changing the analog part with a bad deadzone for 1 that I know works perfectly fine fix the issue on the bad controller? Not sure if it's the hardware at fault or the way the controller reads the signals from it cause it doesn't seem loose/stuck or anything. Thanks and double thanks for the video!
This is much better than to throw it away and buy a new, it would be a wast also spares the environment. anyway is there a more smooth analog replacement part, so it feels more the ps3 controller ones... or better ones than the original ?
thanks for the video! i tried to fix my controller and as a first time virgin i had no idea what i was getting my self into. i guess i need a solder kit. thanks.
had that same issue, ended up beingi the housing, if that doesnt work the back pins bend them outwards so they can make a better contact with the battery pack, also clean the battery pack with q-tips and rubbing alcohol, if its really dirty scrub it with a sharp object .
Hey man thanks fro the comment!, Not really i just like anything with electronics i do alot of repairs for people around my area The controller in this video was my friends he just didnt want it so i offered him something for it, but when they ask me how much I just usually charge $10 for the part they need to replace, or $12 for any 2 parts lol, its not much compared to most people but its something lol! but I will think about it thanks appreciate the support!!
Nice vid man. This has taught me 2 things. Firstly that soldering iron with the built in sucker. Never seen one of these before, what is the correct name because i need something like this so bad. Secondly, it's taught me that the trigger can't be removed without de-soldering the pot, so thanks very much for the vid, very helpful indeed.
radioshack, i got it for around $20 very handy but its more for heavy duty type soldering or for those who solder alot, the pump ones are Decent if your only doing quick jobs something like this a tube pump works fine good luck!
indie game on xbox marketplace called "controller doctor" it is awesome i just bought it for 240 micro points - it analyzes the calibration of the controller and shows the speed and strength of bumpers and triggers and shows when buttons are engaged- i just got the t8 security torx from advanced auto parts it comes like a swiss army knife set without knives just a bunch of security torx screwdrivers for $7.99-controller doctor shows where triggers speed doesn't always engage u cant tell normally
I use a hakko 936 solder station and solder at 700 degrees....anything over that will damage the board or cause you to rip off the solder pads. You can get a HAKKO solder station for like 95 bucks (new digital ones, real nice)
how much do all all of these things cost in total including the de soldering tool and what kind of line do you use to solder plus parts for xbox controller where did you buy all these parts from?
thanks to your video now i can get my controller and get it fix myself that way i dont have to be buying new controler for some little thing. i can make my controller like new again. thanks!
Noob Saibot Yes I know but where do you recommend? There are many electronic parts from China that are of poor quality and not worth the time of installing. II'd rather buy a new controller than deal with them. I'm looking for a tested and true company or name brand.
+Noob Saibot Do you have any extra boards with the analog stick repaired? Maybe I'll just buy it off you since I don't have a desoldering iron. My left stick is starting to get sloppy. Otherwise I may just order an new replacement. I think wireless controllers are about $35 now. Only depends if they charge for shipping. Or maybe Walmart has them.
+Raze Lighter well in theory but finding them is hit and miss if you don't know the magic search sauce. All I'm finding is the plastic button caps from custom mod shops. The actual electric parts are hard to find. What's 360 buttons list results is full of Nintendo parts ( nice job eBay)
Stripped means if you removed the Metal pad the solder goes on top of, constantly heating it up it will melt and or putting to much pressure it will fall off making it unrepairable.
Hey nice video, I was wondering where did you get those tools, I already have the solder but the sucking tool you had? Sorry I don't know what's it called /.\ , but great video, you made it look simple and easy. Trying to replace the same Rb1 button! :D
Excellent post!! You have a lot of talent with these tools my good man. Is this a business of yours? Are you willing to fix other Xbox 360 controllers? If so, how much do you charge? :) I bet you could make a nice side business with this gig!! All the best to you!
please reply.. I will be waiting for your earliest response.. SO MANY THANKS TO YOU MAN!!! I have a controller (RB problem) which I can fix if u give me some suggestion.. dear friend, which desoldering parts/,method should I use? I am a noob in deosoldering. plz suggest me, but I am thinking ur tool (esoldering iron) may become very easy for me.. right??
Nice video. But can you suggest any place to get the analog replacement? I tried cheap ones from Tmart.com and they had a bunch of dead space where moving the analog did nothing, so I need to find something else.
I have bought numerous Alps 3d joysticks online.. some of them just do not work correctly.. they go slow in some directions.. I resolder the original and all is ok.. Where do you buy your alps 3d joysticks from? Any recommendations would appreciated.
i dont really know what you mean by stripped but i did actually try a few time aplying heat to try to get the solder off, the trigger does work but it just always aims down sights, and another thing why did the analog completely stop working if i didnt even touch it? oh and i do have to controllers that dont work i could use thos for parts and get a trigger mechanism off of one
Hey Dude, was wondering if you could tell me why a wireless 360 controller won't charge all the way. I got two of them with a brand new play n charge cord & battery. Thanks
I have a controller that is experiencing power issues. For instance, the controller does light up and work but it only shows a low charge and eventualy shuts down after a while. For now i keep it plugged in with the play-and-charge constantly so it can work but it gets quite annoying to have a wired wireless controller all the time. Do you know how I could repair this one?
Question to Xdem...have you ever swapped out a trigger(right) and it works flawlessly in one game but doesn't in another???? swapped out a right trigger and TS motors, but when I play SAINTS ROW and jump in a car and try to reverse....it will ither work for like 5 seconds or not work at all. BUT when I play BLOPS2 it works flawlessly....ideas??
Hello my friend I have Problem with (LB) button that is there place is Taking so much heat when I try to de soldering it and I replace it with new one and not working, I want to know is that mean my joystick is useless and thank you for the video you are good man :D
My right analog stick keeps looking up on its own while I'm playing C.O.D can this repair be the solution to fix this problem? Please let me know what you going would greatly appreciate it good bless
Hi, could you give any prediction how long should soldered controller last being fully functional? Is controller performance affected anyhow after soldering, for example response time?
Impossible to predict, Only depends on how well you take care of it, can last months, years, also depends on the quality of the solder but even then it should last just as long. performance (if dont correctly) will match the original.
Quick question (hopefully you'll have the answer): Can I take the 360 left analog joystick component off and put it on my xbox one circuit board? They look almost identical, my xbox one controller has stick drift and I ordered a new component but it may take 15 days and I am impatient lol.. Thx in advance.
Hey XDem209, were can i buy the analog sticks and the click switches for left and right bumper?? i seriously needa swich the left analog and the right bumper
Hey, I actually found it and got parts in already. After dropping in the new stick, my character still walks to the left. Any other suggestions/parts I could look at?
Hello I was wondering if you could help me, you know those three points you need to desolder on the triggers? Well I seemed to have sucked the hole dry of solder and now when I try and solder it back together there is no connection because the solder is not running into the hole just sitting on top of the board. Is there some fix? Like maybe some liquid that goes in the hole to make new solder stick?
ok let me make it a bit clearer i never actually got to even remove the trigger points i did not touch the analog yet...i think i burnt the board i little bit im not sure thohg on the trigger, i just ordered a sucker on ebay... is it repairable?
where could i get one of those sucking things you use at 4:07? or is there any other way around this without using that sucking thing? i know its a soldering gun but where can i get just the tip?
is there anything in this replacement that will cause the controller to not turn back on after following the steps in this video and replacing the analog sensor everything went very smoothly but now the controller wont turn back on?? any help would be appreciated
Is there any way to replace the analogs with ps3 analogs? Not just the sticks but the thing that's connected to the motherboard because I hate how the 360 sticks are stiffer than the ps3's, or atleast a modded controller out there that I can buy?
hi, the right analog stick doesn't move up and down, I mean it physically moves but it not really responds. should I replace that part? or I can try something else? I already tried to clean it with compressed air, but it didn't help thanks.
heyyy i have a rework station (ma dad got for me) and the soldiering iron is connected to the big power thingy. it has adjustable temperature so idunno how many watts it is. what temp shud i use for this?
What to do if after re-soldering a replacement analog (3rd party part) it drifts a bit to the left and downwards? Physically it looks straight in the center. Is there a way to log in to the controller to adjust it's analog possitions?
I have a Razer Sabertooth, and the thumb sticks on them are really twitchy and unreliable, really noticeable when playing FPS's. Is there any way i could get a sturdy reg xbox controller thumb stick and replace it with the Razer one? I don't think the soldering spots are in the same place, but would there be any DIY way to make it work? Any help is appreciated.
Do you know what could be wrong with the controller if the top left led lights up,then all 4 light up at the same time, then it goes off?Its very fast,2-3 secs.
Hey, do you know which soldering points control the Y-axis? I got only Y working first, then I got XY working but then RT was stuck on, noticed a comment posted here, tried to fix it by lowering the analog and now my Y doesn't work and I still have RT on. I would really much like to leave the working soldering points untouched for now and only focus on the ones which don't work. Any ideas?

dude thank you for posting this video, with clear instructions, cause i know shyt about soldering. really helped. thanks
Good vid man. What stuff is in that gold looking bin? Could u use a desoldering braid if u don't have a desoldering iron.

Hey man i was wondering does this work every time, like do you just soder them in and go or do you have to calibrate them?
Where did you get these parts from? I am have the same problem except my left analog button doesn't work. Also with the LB button...
radioshack, i got it for around $20 very handy but its more for heavy duty type soldering or for those who solder alot, the pump ones are Decent if your only doing quick jobs something like this a tube pump works fine good luck!

I'm sure it's probably been asked, But where do you order the replacement analog sticks from?
You can buy them just about anywhere on the Internet, ranging from eBay to Amazon, aftermarkets of Xbox 360 controllers that includes the parts, etc.
Noob Saibot
Yes I know but where do you recommend? There are many electronic parts from China that are of poor quality and not worth the time of installing. II'd rather buy a new controller than deal with them. I'm looking for a tested and true company or name brand.

its to remove any solder left on the iron, you can use desoldering braid but its more difficult in my opinion
using solder just makes the process way longer than needed. The deseoldering tool can be bought at RADIO SHACK for 15 bucks plus tax (huge time saver)
Stripped means if you removed the Metal pad the solder goes on top of, constantly heating it up it will melt and or putting to much pressure it will fall off making it unrepairable.

I will be attempting this for both analog sticks on all 4 of my controllers. Hope it works out well for me. :)
thats a desoldering iron its made for desoldering , you can use desoldering wick which is a cheaper alternative.
please reply.. I will be waiting for your earliest response..
SO MANY THANKS TO YOU MAN!!! I have a controller (RB problem) which I can fix if u give me some suggestion..
dear friend, which desoldering parts/,method should I use? I am a noob in deosoldering. plz suggest me, but I am thinking ur tool (esoldering iron) may become very easy for me.. right??
What watt soldering iron is best? I have a dual heat one (Either 15 or 30 Watt). Thanks!
your video is awesome, if only I had seen it a week ago!!!!!
hey was wondering how thick was your soldering and is .6mm thin or thick to do this kinda job with controllers. thanks
you might just want to get a hand held vacuum from goodwill and attach a tube to it, that's what i did and it works well and is cheap
Decided to go with trial and error and it worked out fine, no more jittery aiming
hey man.....how do you get that nice pyramid shape....do you use flux?
the analog and the lt trigger needed to be pressed firmly on the board before soldering if its loose it will do that
thanks for the vid, it helped me successfully solder for the first time. liked
where did you get that solder sucker you got it brilliant.
Nice video. But can you suggest any place to get the analog replacement? I tried cheap ones from Tmart.com and they had a bunch of dead space where moving the analog did nothing, so I need to find something else.

Does it matter what kind of solder you use?
I messed both of my analog sticks because of rage due to MW3 but PS3 controller. Do you think this is the same concept?
Thank you, this was exactly the kind of tutorial I was looking for.
Is your soldering gun from radio shack? What wattage is it? 30?
Hey Dude, was wondering if you could tell me why a wireless 360 controller won't charge all the way.

the are pretty delicate if those are stripped its over. most likely you let it "burn" for to long
how much watts do you need the soldering iron to have , Im planning on buying one just to fix my controllers
Hello my friend I have Problem with (LB) button that is there place is Taking so much heat when I try to de soldering it and I replace it with new one and not working, I want to know is that mean my joystick is useless and thank you for the video you are good man :D
your english is just fine :) any time good luck!
Nice where can i get a solder gun just like yours?
what solder are you currently using?
Where did you get that orange thing that's on you're soldering tool?
My right analog stick keeps looking up on its own while I'm playing C.O.D can this repair be the solution to fix this problem? Please let me know what you going would greatly appreciate it good bless
Absolutely.
Thanks man u r a life saver I just got the piece mailed to me now waiting on my solder kit and I'm going to fallow ur instructions from this video
Your Welcome.

theres a vid i saw on the xbox one controller, where they mention the xbox one's analogs being smaller than the 360.
Thanks. I guess i just wasn't thinking when getting them from that place.
Hey XDem209, were can i buy the analog sticks and the click switches for left and right bumper?? i seriously needa swich the left analog and the right bumper
Hey, I actually found it and got parts in already. After dropping in the new stick, my character still walks to the left. Any other suggestions/parts I could look at?
how come the big blobs of solder wont melt? how many watts is u desolder iron? 45 watts?
Hello I was wondering if you could help me, you know those three points you need to desolder on the triggers? Well I seemed to have sucked the hole dry of solder and now when I try and solder it back together there is no connection because the solder is not running into the hole just sitting on top of the board. Is there some fix? Like maybe some liquid that goes in the hole to make new solder stick?
Where did you get the replacement parts from?
ok let me make it a bit clearer i never actually got to even remove the trigger points i did not touch the analog yet...i think i burnt the board i little bit im not sure thohg on the trigger, i just ordered a sucker on ebay... is it repairable?
What kind of soldering iron have u got ?
What type of desolder is it that you used?
you can order them from eBay....sometimes you can get 10 for 12 bucks or 2 for 5 bucks
where did y get the 3d analog sensor cause there's a lot on eBay and not sure which to get?
I tried this but it didnt seem to work for me. i think it make just be the soldering wire i used. is there a specific kind that would work best?
either they weren't pressed all the way down while they were soldered or the board got stripped just hope it was the first :)
where could i get one of those sucking things you use at 4:07? or is there any other way around this without using that sucking thing? i know its a soldering gun but where can i get just the tip?
do u have the video as well on a ps4 dual shock controller...
you could but it would be hard as hell lol, cant you change the button set up in game?
@nathan201010
for this vid i used kester rosin core solder, many have preference for solder with flux in it but i seem to do better with rosin core
is there anything in this replacement that will cause the controller to not turn back on after following the steps in this video and replacing the analog sensor everything went very smoothly but now the controller wont turn back on?? any help would be appreciated
I already tried to clean it with compressed air, but it didn't help thanks.
heyyy i have a rework station (ma dad got for me) and the soldiering iron is connected to the big power thingy. it has adjustable temperature so idunno how many watts it is. what temp shud i use for this?
lol yeah im aware of it, soldered over 100+ analogs on controllers, my first time i actually did strip the board but from then on never had that issue
What to do if after re-soldering a replacement analog (3rd party part) it drifts a bit to the left and downwards? Physically it looks straight in the center. Is there a way to log in to the controller to adjust it's analog possitions?
Can you please give the links of where you buy the parts? I can't find the rb/lb button ;(
I have a Razer Sabertooth, and the thumb sticks on them are really twitchy and unreliable, really noticeable when playing FPS's. Is there any way i could get a sturdy reg xbox controller thumb stick and replace it with the Razer one? Do you know what could be wrong with the controller if the top left led lights up,then all 4 light up at the same time, then it goes off?Its very fast,2-3 secs.
What kind of solder was used during this?
ok well do you think mine is repairable? like i said it works it just gets stuck in ads
Its in the description
when do you use the flux?
Hey, do you know which soldering points control the Y-axis? what is the thing he is using to take the solder points off????
