I like it because every team will have a chance, rosters will be stacked (MLB on steroids) Olympic Basketball heavily favors the USA (always has) no fault of their own, so you might as well just mail the players the gold medal and let the other countries fight for silver & bronze (NBA)
The whole offense look behind them is dumb. Why not have the player in the middle of the line have his hand in the air facing the returner while the rest of the player have their bodies turned toward the defense but watching his hand. When the ball is caught he puts his hand down signifying the ball is in play.
Ummm...could you address why 4 players on the receiving team were 2 yards closer to the goal line, and it looked like one was actually facing the defensive line...please?
For future reference, mano y mano means "hand to hand" not "man to man." It's still kind of applicable but maybe just "one on one" would be better. But sure, let's find us someone who can kick well AND run down a starting tailback. I won't hold my breath.
looks like return teams will have great field position. dont like it myself. i dont believe you need to spice up the NFL . If you want to speed things up Make replay challenges faster.
I like it, I don’t go to games ( can’t afford it ) so I don’t care about the price of food or drinks but the 4 points for long field goals is a great idea
I don't go often but when I do which I can afford most people look like they found their last dime in the couch . Why you would pay all that money for bad seats even when their good and bad food when you can watch at home...
@@ultimatechickenhorsesweat2614 Instead of an onside kick, the UFL lets the scoring team opt to scrimmage from their 28, and they must get to their 40 to keep the ball.
The XFL, not sure about the UFL, let the kickoff team opt to either do a traditional onside attempt or choose basically 1 play, 4th and 12 from their own 28. If they got to the 40, then they kept the ball and regular play resumed, but I don't remember all the details about penalties affecting ball placement, etc. The kicking team still had to declare either way. It would have been obvious because they would line up in a "traditional NFL style" kick formation or the 4th and 12 formation.
The new way is stupid! Eliminating fair catches I can understand, but if they wanted a return attempt on every kick-off, just move the kicker back 10 yards so he can't kick the ball through the end zone.
I think putting the ball on the 35 or 40 if not returned is too much. There is a real reason to control which side of the 50 you play on and if you start off at the 40 instead of the 23, you only need one first down to be almost in field goal range. That is not a good thing in my book.
I don't think you understood what was said. The rules does not say put the ball on the 35 or 40 if not returned, it says if the ball lands outside of the landing zone either long (35) or short (40), then it is move to the 35 or 40.
Letting the team know that you are going to do an onside kick, is like calling the bank and letting them know that you are on your way to rob them, while you are on your way there.
I tried with the XFL's version and couldn't like it or understand it. Seems to just take a unique play like the kickoff and turn it into an even more boring play. Why not just put the kickoffs at the 30 or the 25? Maybe I'm in the minority here... but UGH....
@@NashRespectPeople like watching football for the hard hits, health issues or not. These players are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game worth very little to society other than for entertainment. Meanwhile, blue-collar workers are out here breaking down their bodies, living pay check to pay check, and getting no consideration for their "health" issues, lmao. We are living in one of the bad timelines, that's for sure.
I agree that the NFL isn't very appealing today. My interest has sharply declined over the past several years so I barely watch it now. College is much better but they are in the process of ruining it now too. At least they finally expanded the playoff so we can see some new teams competing for the championship.
Bad news, bro. College ball has its own share of serious problems. Confernce musical chairs, transfer portal basically allows players to trade themselves, NIL money nonsense leads to players bailing on their team for a new Lambo at another team, etc. It's why Saban retired.
It doesn't make sense for the Texans return team players to be facing their returner and away from their blocks. Simply face the kick team and react when they move forward to cover the kickoff. The coverage team still has to move forward when the returner catches the ball. That's their visual indication the play has started.
@@flowingafterglow629 >Yes, because if the return team has ALL of its guys facing the kicking team and reacting only when the kicking team reacts then the kicking them can do head and shoulder fakes along the line and draw the receiving team offsides. You obviously cannot do this on regular running plays as it is illegal procedure, but I suspect any movement not over the line won't be deemed offside. You know, like how safeties and linebackers fake a blitz but don't go over the line. So I would have them all face the receiving team except for the one "shot caller" who watches the kick and calls out "go." The normal rule of the defending team not calling out offensive signals would have to extend here on the kickout.
@@delstanley1349 Neither side can move before the ball is touched or it touches the ground. So "fakes" are not allowed. p.s. I didn't watch any of the pre-season games so I may be eating crow 😅
I don't recall a high rate of injuries on kickoff returns, as the powers-that-be claim is true. Let everyone play football again without all these strange and wimpy rule changes!
After one week of "pre-season" ... If I had to make this work I would (1) Move the kicker back to their own 20 ; (2) Kicking Team at the 50 (something about lining-up in the opposing territory to start is just wrong!) ; (3) Receiving team at their 40. (4) All else can stay the same.
I saw this in the 2023 XFL season, and before that in the European League of Football. I don't recall any touchdowns, but there were virtually no touchbacks or missed target zones, so you almost always got action on kickoffs.
@@23chnge There will be more touch backs Why would you risk a returner breaking 1 tackle and being gone to save 10 yards or whatever. Let’s just play Rock, Paper, Scissors. Rock wins and starts at the 20, Paper at the 25 and Scissors starts at the 30 . If someone gets a paper cut , a time out is called, a band-aid is brought in to fix the boo boo . Both teams huddled at that yardage, have a few beers and the game is called a draw . Black Sunday every Sunday. Short work week. All year to recover. Survivors take all. No more bad calls. Somehow the Browns will still be the cellar dweller and Deshawn will survive to wreak disgust on the Ladies of Masseuse. That's football. See y'all at the rink.
Both teams not moving until ball lands seems a bit crazy. Second thought after watching Commanders kick off against Patriots I see what's going on with this. Maybe it's okay.
Hands to the face, Touch the Qb in the head, or go low, not at the legs, don't land on him which is the only real one I see that's good.Illegal contact, unnecessary rougness, Pass Interference, and so on. I'm a bit late in watching this but just wanna say, what an informative video. Love the layout of the video and it is so informative. You've earned a sub!
Great information about the new kickoff rules. However, I want to give Brodie props on his podcast set up. I like the board lighting up behind him and the lighting he is using. Great visuals.
No more pinning your opponent in the backfield during kickoff, I guess. This rule change is a huge disadvantage for the kicking team. They should just get rid of kickoffs altogether and start every new possession on the 30 and be done with it. 🙄
Interesting vid. American Football fan and player. Played HS and some College (at MIT, Division III, wasn't a big sports school, lol, basically if you played HS Football and were interested, you were on the team, lol) No scholarships, so pretty pure Football imo. Played defense, had to learn a 4-4-3 Defense, which I had never experienced before, this was 1980s. Mostly watch and am interested in College Football, as so many of the Pros were just money grubbing divas. HS and College Football evolved over my lifetime, some innovations going up and or down the hierarchy. This is an interesting rule change. I'm an MD for 30 years so understand very well Head/Brain injuries. The evolving concerns of concussions, often mild, but cumulative. Know a lot about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Main reason for rule change, imo, is to prevent brain injuries, played on Kickoff teams. High speed helmet to helmet collisions, often unavoidable, but not so great for that brain thing we carry around in our skull. Kickers got better and stronger over time often kicking through the end zone, so kickoffs had become rather boring. Very interesting rule change, will see how it works out. Likely will reduce high speed helmet to helmet collisions and serious heard injury, that's a plus. How the tactics of the kickoff will adapt, I have a few thoughts on that. Retired MD, so am hoping to do some volunteer HS Coaching in the future and, if this works as intended will likely filter down to College and HS levels. Great vid.
since when could you call for "fair catches" on kickoffs anyway? that was a stupid idea. i swear, they keep changing the rules, no one knows what the hell's going on. they need to revert ALL rules back to 1970 standards and be done with it.
@@brodiebrazil ... thanks for the info. i thought it was pretty recent. it didn't last long did it? all this random, haphazard changing the rules makes the game very inconsistant and confusing.
"Canadian Football League (CFL): Strategies to limit opportunities for Kick Returns will be discouraged more severely. All no-yards penalties - which are assigned when the cover team invades a five-yard halo around the returner as he fields a punt - will be 15 yards. Previously, a no-yards penalty was 15 yards only if the ball had been fielded in the air - and only five yards if the punt had bounced. Also, any punt that sails out of bounds before it reaches an opponent’s 15-yard line will be assigned a penalty - instead of only punts that sail out of bounds before they reach the 20-yard line."
We all know that the No Fun League won’t stop, I know after this season they’ll change another unnecessary rule that has nothing to do with anything. I mean why don’t they just call it a day and say if anyone touches the Qb at all they’re banned for life from the game.
I only watched a couple of games but the return rate was literally 0% for both. Stupid and useless rule change. So much for increasing the return rate.
Aussie NFL fan here; thought that a good change from 2023 would've been a huge penalty for the kicker landing the ball in the end zone or beyond (so boring to the viewer); other team to start at the 50, for example. Like the idea that the "fair catch" is eliminated. That gets rid of 2 possible boring bits of play. Will watch before deciding if I like or not
yes on punts it can be downed w no touching ball or out of bounds kickoffs were a free ball touched or not just like it was a onsides kick goes far enough
A better rule change involving kicking. When a team drives the length of the field they are rewarded 6 points. Field goals from half the field are rewarded half that. Start giving 1 point for kicks outside the 30; 2 points between the 30 and 10; 3 points inside the 10. Think about it.
How about another wrinkle: on the kickoff from the 35, let the kicker signify he is trying for a kick through the uprights. If he makes it, the kicking team gets another 3 points, and goes to another kickoff. AND, if he misses, the receiving team gets the ball at the kicking team’s 35.
1) Is the ball live if the ball hits the landing zone uncaught? 2) Is the ball live if the ball lands in the landing zone then rolls into the end zone and stays in the end zone? 3) What happens if the ball lands in the landing zone, rolls into the end zone, then rolls out of bounds?
@@LJHLU You laugh but it may become a punt in a few years. 4th and 15 at your 35. Punt or risk giving your opponent great field advantage if you don't convert..
Kickoffs were boring though. A team would score. -Go to commercial .- Kickoff through the endzone. -Go to more commercials. This will actually force them to play football on a kickoff.
@@RevitUp81 Are you familiar with the new kickoff rule? Not just the onside kick rule. Kickoffs have been completely changed. The receiving team no longer lines up 10 yards away from the ball, but 30 yards away. The kicker must land the ball in a "landing zone" and there are no fair catches, which will greatly increase the number of actual returns, as opposed to a touchback on 80% of kickoffs. The original comment was "let men play football". My point was that this will increase the amount of actual football played. Still confused?
Things that I think will start to happen in the coming years: 1. Receiving team will start looking towards kickoff team instead of their kick receiver and there will be communication from kicker once ball is caught to avoid missed blocks at kickoff. 2. Onside kicks will become more common in specific situations. 3. Kickers will be told to kick through end zone with a lead bc of momentum, why tf wouldn't you?
Or at least move the kicker back. That's the problem. Kickers have gotten so powerful that almost every kick goes out of the end zone. Force the kicker to kick the football within the playing field. And no fair catches. That solves the problem.
I remember in Canadian ball when you could have an onside fellow on the punt. He would line up behind the punter and was eligible to race downfield and recover the punt without regard to the five yard protection zone for the punt returner. Of course it would force the punt returner to actually play the ball rather than let it slowly die as the onside guy raced down on you.
They need to give the kicking team an option in the fourth quarter if they need a come-back when losing other than an onside kick, like in the XFL, allow them an option of 4th down and 15 from their own 25 yard line.
You could also do this: You start on your 5 yard line and have 4 downs, no first downs. If you get a TD, then you get 2 TDs. The extra point works the same. A kick is 2 pts, a normal 2 pt would be 4. You could potentially get 16 points from that.
Thanks Bodie. My wife asked yesterday to explain it and I muddled thru about half of it but now I’m good to go. As I wrote previously we saw 100% return rate in the game that we watched and I’m willing to be coaches are keeping their cards close to their chest on strategies they’ll implement in the regular season. As a fan and not a coach I see a lot of opportunities for really inventive returns that will make the game exciting. Props to the NFL for not sitting stagnant and trying to improve a part of the game that was easy to tinker with without destroying the integrity of the game. The only part I don’t like, but don’t have the solution for, is having to tell on yourself for the onside kick.
It will be interesting to watch teams develop new strategies. I was hoping you'd go into a bit more detail about what movements the lines can make. Once the ball touches ground/is touched, can either line move in either direction? My guess is that each line's players will not always move towards the ball carrier, rather, they will form into a predetermined pattern (like a 3-4 defense, etc). I also wonder if there will be any advantage for the kicker to run forward (right after the kick) and try to become part of the line, or if the odds are better if he stays back.
Thank you for the thorough, understandable explanation of the new kickoff rule which I did not want to watch hoping the new rule would just disappear if I ignored it. As an NFL traditionalist, I don’t like it. I hope you are right when saying, by October we will not notice it anymore. I wish the NFL would listen to fans before changing the game on such a big scale.
I like the idea of replacing kick-offs with a punt. Instead of a kick-off you start on your own 35 with a 4th and 15 (or 20) and it's just like any other play. You'll probably punt, but you can also try to get a first, either out of desperation or trickery.
Good idea, but I worry about many games getting changed due to so much def holding and pass interference. Those can’t be automatic first downs on the 4th and 15 play.
A bit weird making the receiving team have their backs to their opponents, especially with only 5 yards gap to collect & turn with the ball, before being pounced upon. Looks like a great opportunity for players from other codes to shine & join the NFL. Players like Aussie Rules Footy (AFL), Rugby (League & Union) or even Gaelic Football, where players stay on the field for the entire match and play both offensively & defensively.
Colleges and Universities provide the players to the pro teams. Are the NCAA rules going to change as well. Therefore, these kick off rule changes suck big time.
Overtime rules were completely different between the two for over a decade. The hash marks are still much further apart on a college field, and the goalposts are wider. College: One foot down is in. NFL: two feet, or a knee, elbow, hand, etc. are required to land inbounds. The rules have NEVER been the same.
I agree but all those differences are minor compared to the kick off rules now in the NFL. You get a penalty if you move until the ball is hits the ground or is touched or you have to notify everyone of an onsides kick or the ball has to land w/i a 20-yard area of the field during a kickoff, give me and NFL football fans a break. This is liberal woke sh*t and it's the camel's nose under the tent with more sissy changes to come. Eventually, if the woke liberals get their way, there'll be no more tackling just pulling a flag to stop the play. and just standup blocking with all the other flag football sissy rules.
@@mal2ksc Don’t forget that in college, a player doesn’t need to be touched to be down. Doesn’t matter if he simply tripped over a blade of grass, down is down. In the NFL, a player’s not down until he’s touched (down by contact).
annnnnnd at the high school level, it's different from both college and the NFL. 12 min quarters (at least in my state), no replay reviews, overtime procedures can vary, the kickoff line was further up. I'm sure there were other differences. Pop Warner: even more differences. The rules have always changed as a player grows older and plays at a more advanced level.
These NFL kickoff rule changes make the NFL the National Sissy League (NSL) and are a camel's nose under the tent, meaning more to come. Like no more tackles just pulling flags from opposing player carrying the ball (flag football like in grade school), no more heavy blocks at the line of scrimmage with players just standing up to get in the way but no touching. And finally, once all of that is in place, women have to be allowed to play all positions in NSL football to completely 'woke' the sport.
9 minutes and still so many unanswered questions. What if kick lands out of bounds to the side? What if it lands in the landing zone, then bounces out of bounds on the side? Obviously, not everybody has to stand still until the ball hits ground or receiver -- the kicker and receiver can move. How many can be back to receive? What spacing is required between players? Must the blockers & tacklers be touching the 35 and 40 to begin with? Why wouldn't a kicker just line-drive the ball, bounce it in the landing zone, and into the end zone, passed the receivers?
One of the stupidest NFL rules ever allows a kick returner to step out of bounds before touching the ball, then (while still out of bounds) reaching back into the field of play for the ball, which results in a penalty for the other team for "kicking" the ball out of bounds. I mean, WTF?!?
I think if teams start to break thru on a regular basis yeah 2 guys hang back as a 2nd line. Not leave it all on the kicker. Which maybe start to see larger kickers to help with tackles
I think just alter two things. No penalty for the ball landing in the end zone only if its kicked out of the end zone without touching the field of play. The other rule is there is no touch back. This forces all receiving teams to run the ball out. Why punish the kicking team for such a short landing zone. If the NFL wants returns this forces teams to run it back. Plus most returns will be around to the 20-25 yard line. Just make the penalty for kicking it straight out of bounds or out the back of the end zone without touching the ground a penalty to the 35. Truly if a kicker kicks it short of the so called zone the ball is basically going to be returned to the 30-35 any way why penalize for short kicks. Just make the rule the ball must hit behind the receiving players line. With all those receiving players looking back they are going to see the ball land. So if it falls short they can get it. In 2023, 88% of drives after kickoffs started between the 21-30-yard lines. 30% of drives started on or beyond the 31-yard line, and 17% of drives started inside the 20-yard line. The NFL expects about 50-60% of kick offs to be returned this season. Season before it was 22%. So by their own estimates 40-50% of kick offs will not be returned. In 2023, the average starting field position for teams following kickoff returns or touchbacks was their own 25.2-yard line. In the 2024 preseason, that number is up to the team’s own 28.1-yard line. The touchback rate in the preseason is only 19 percent, which is substantially lower than the rate of 73 percent in the regular season last year. So if kicking it out of the landing zone or out the back of the end zone results in a 30 yard line spot then your only really dealing with two yards. As some analysis of special teams coaches say the more data comes in and this is the stat holds or is exceeded you will once more see more teams kicking it out of the back of the end zones. Looking from it from the other side of the ball. Receiving teams are only really seeing 3-4 yard gains. Putting aside the safety element. Is this in the end if stats keep as they are going to really change anything. If returns once the season starts inch past 30 yard line then will more teams just kick it through the end zone? Higher return averages that are more than the penalty may result back to the kicking team just taking the penalty. Of course one could increase the penalty then at one point is the penalty to great? Managing a true balance of risk vs rewards is what a kick off should be about. Should we kick it for a touch back or maybe we can pin them deep that is what a kicking team should be thinking. Is the thrill of seeing more returns a higher reward or managing a starting point of the offense to start their game? Making teams run back instead of fair catching the ball might result in lower starting averages but at the same time it forces returns that are in the end zone which is what everyone keeps saying they want. It gives bigger incentive for the kicking team to try and pin a team deep because it will reset the starting position perhaps 5-6 yards back to the old 20 yard line. They still get penalized if they kick it out of the back or out of bounds. In the end what is the main purpose? Increasing returns? yard age gained? Increasing strategy of teams choices?
Lunacy… O starts on 30 on run back, 35, 40 on penalties… Three 12 yard plays, field goal! Completely different game than starting on 20… D had a chance of defending 80 yards, at least 50, required O getting multiple 1st downs… Todays world kickers kick 55 yards regularly… Only thing worse is pass inteference call… Zebra misses push off TD vs penalty… Zebra calls foul on D instead of O, O gets 30, 40 yards and 1st instead of penalty… O gets penalty, D doesn’t get 30, 40 yards… Don’t know if receiver would have caught ball, stayed in bounds, not fumbled just assume the 30 or 40 and 1st… Why don’t we assume D would have intercepted for pick 6 when O pushes off… Shouldn’t they get the 30, 40 possible yards… Just give 6… Expecting caught and run to end using current logic… Zebras are just as important as kicker, qb end of game with current pass interference… New kickoff similar game changing menace !
I think there will be more mass momentum collisions. The kicking team can kick left, right, center and focus their coverage to that point, the receiving team will be blocking at right angles due to reaction time for blocking strategies. I have seen the ball spotted at the point it goes out of the side lines. Low spinning kicks will evolve to make it more difficult to catch or guess where it will bounce or roll. Target zone then end zone still goes out to the twenty.
This was put in strictly for saftey of the players and that’s a good thing for them but not as exciting for the fans . The confusion by payers and refs in yesterday’s Chiefs /Jags game proved this is a nightmare in the making .
Not so much in the regular season but I could see lots of teams taking advantage of this deep in the playoffs.(scenario from last years playoffs) Choose between Jamyr Gibbs or Jameson Williams to kick to..? Yea, Your better off kicking it through the end zone.
What happened to the kickoff ' return game? The Blocking for the returner is 20-30 yards upfield. There are no blockers around him. If the Kickoff Team was at least at the 50 it would give time to set up a return once the ball hits the zone or ground. This sounds so ridiculous.
This new kickoff rule is dumb. Why not just give the receiving team the ball on their own 20? No time wasted on the clock, which the networks will love.
Just subscribed. Enjoy your content Brodie. Hopefully you’ll do a section on the ever changing world of sports television with Venu Sports launching soon and will it become the best service for cord cutters who loves sports 🏈
Okay. So an onside kick has to be "declared". But what specifically determines what an onside kick is? Does it simply mean the ball has to hit the ground before it goes 10 yards? And what if it goes more yardage than that? What happens then? I don't quite get that.
On an onside kick, if the ball goes more than 25 yards from the kick spot without touching a player, it's a 15 yard penalty and the receiving team gets the ball.
New Kick-Off rule really makes for a Suck ass boring game. All it does is shorten the Field of Play where momentum/speed supposedly is less when the player is tackled or having a bad collision. It pretty much lessens the chance of a Kick-Off return for a Touch Down. Running the EXTRA MAN onto the Field is Huh! What? How Stupid! So at times your team is allowed 12 Players on field.
Thank you for this excellent explanation. Seems like the O-line doesn’t have much time to spot the catch and turn and set for defense. As you mentioned, if a return gets past the D-line, it’s a clear path to the touch down. Really an odd rule change, but benefits the players health 👍. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s slightly modified and dialed in after a year of it.
That is correct. I looked it up on the NFL website and have seen it on the first GB Packers first preseason game. Cleveland kicked their first two kickoffs directly into the endzone and the ball was spotted at the 30. The same holds true even if the ball is kicked directly over the end line. I believe teams will eventually try to kick it inside the 5 yard and the goal line. If it is returned you have some chance of stopping the return inside the 30. If it bounces into to end and downed, it’s the 20. Or, just booming and spot at the 30.
Owners splitting merchandise sales, ticket sales, TV revenue yada yada removed any motivation for many of them to improve their teams. Change all the rules but it's still crap.
So this rule is borrowed from the XFL. Yeah, most of their games are played indoors, and do not have to deal with the weather. With tough Winter weather, Wind, Rain, etc - Now the Kickers have to land the ball within that zone.
I give it 2 weeks and the fan base will demand kickoffs go back to what kickoffs were last year. If the NFL really wanted to stop touchbacks and increase play I have a very simple fix. Kick the ball from the 25. Any ball kicked out of the end zone results in 2 points for receiving team. Any ball fielded or unfielded and/or downed in the end zone results in the kicking team getting 2 points and the receiving team getting the ball at the 30. Onside kicks still exist without a declaration, meaning surprises still exist. There I fixed it. That was simple.
Make it a single point, and make the field 110 yards long, and also wider. And add an extra player on each side. Then we could call it "Canadian football." It would definitely be more exciting than the NFL.
Every new rule imposed by the NFL makes the game less interesting, less exciting. Every two plays there is a penalty because now practically everything is considered roughing or interference. At this rate bad breath will soon be a penalty.
Thius was the best part of the XFL in 2023. I was disappointed that the UFL didn't keep it for the 2024 season. Now, the NFL need to implement the 4th and 12 yards, after the team behind scores, in the 4th qtr.
I wish they had some the 4th and 15 play instead. It's a real football play, it reduces the chance of injury, and it preserves the possibility of surprise by doing for it. Converting is also more a test of real football, rather than an inside kick which is a mostly random play.
Simply moving the kickoff point back to the 25 yard line would solve it. This, in a round about way, creates the 5 yard halo around the kicked ball in Canadian football.
Those commenters arguing "let them play Football" don't seem to understand that this will add more Football playing to the game! I was getting tired of the "Touchdown-Commercials-Kickoff through the endzone-More commercials" charade. This forces them to play Football on Kickoffs. The other option was eliminating kickoffs all together.
Having watched ~ 50 kick-offs in pre-season under the new rule set ... 90%+ even after being returned are ending up being tackled around the 25 yard line, +/- 3 or 4 yards. Meaning that basically nothing is changing, because last season 90%+ of all kick-offs were touchbacks resulting with ball being spotted at the 25 yard line. **SO WHY BOTHER**
Those are basically the same stats from the xfl. The majority of kicks that landed in the landing zone was returned to about the 25 yard line. I also think that the touchback rule is 30 yard line not the 35. So really we are just talking about 5 yards if the kicker just nails the ball into the end zone. All that is really happening is giving a gift to offense because the kicking side has to put the ball in a 20 yard area. If they wish to keep this style of kickoff. Remove the landing zone, remove fair catching and kneeling, and just add a penalty for kicking the ball out the back or sidelines. This means no matter if the ball is kicked into the endzone the ball must be run out. My personal view was if they just are worried about safety just line up for a punt near the 50 or 40 yard line of the kicking team. The ball is considered live and if kicked must go more than 10 yards before hitting the ground or is considered dead ball. If blocked its simply a live ball with the same rule of kicking team must advance it 10 yards or it is down where the tackle is made and receiving team takes possession. If the kicking team wishes to run a trick play they can go for it and if they make lets say 10 or more yards they keep the ball.
I haven't watched a game since about 2002. If it's not broken, don't fix it. The offense is turned around and they will get more injuries. The defense has a 5 yard head of steam before they make contact.

I think a NEW rule should be..... Parking under $10.00...... Hot dogs under $4.00.... Beer under $8.00.... Field goals over 60 yards..... 4 points

@@marktheaardvark7208 the problem with awarding more points for long field goals is that it punishes the offense for moving the ball down field.
Removing the element of surprise for onside kicks will further kill that late-game tactic, which was already neutered with the previous rule change.
My main issue with this. I like it but the onside is brutal. Need a change to that next year
@@ultimatechickenhorsesweat2614 Instead of an onside kick, the UFL lets the scoring team opt to scrimmage from their 28, and they must get to their 40 to keep the ball.
Good. Maybe coaches will stop being such cowards on 4th down when time is getting short.
But how much surprise was there, really? And there’s still an element of unknown in terms of where the onside kick will go.
The new way is stupid! Eliminating fair catches I can understand, but if they wanted a return attempt on every kick-off, just move the kicker back 10 yards so he can't kick the ball through the end zone.
I am all for player safety but this is a stupid way of doing kickoffs

Agree
I hate that they have to wait until the ball gets to the returner to move. Doesn’t look like football.
But they don't have anywhere near as far to run. It doesn't look like football, though, you're right there.
Now that they have attracted large numbers of female viewers the owners in order to have more games have dialed down defensive everything.
i agree. but they had to make a kickoff change.. kickoffs got pointless these past years
The clock doesn't start until the ball is caught, so that's when the players can move.
In my old day. kicks come out to the 20.

Or have one person in the middle watching and have them yell "Go" when it hits.

Great vid.

"Canadian Football League (CFL):
Strategies to limit opportunities for Kick Returns will be discouraged more severely.
The CFL has been messing with their rules too much as well. But they do a much better job of encouraging exciting kick and punt returns.
Now an easier way for fixing games. While Vegas make big 💰
We all know that the No Fun League won’t stop, I know after this season they’ll change another unnecessary rule that has nothing to do with anything. I mean why don’t they just call it a day and say if anyone touches the Qb at all they’re banned for life from the game.
I really like the way you explained this!
I stopped watching the NFL when they took their first knee.
I only watched a couple of games but the return rate was literally 0% for both. Stupid and useless rule change. So much for increasing the return rate.
Not sure I like the part about telling the other team you’re doing an onside kick. Keep the surprise in the game
Conceptually, it is no different when kicking an extra point versus going for two. Declare your intent and everyone lines up accordingly.
@@JeffreyW67 And what about a fake kick for two?
I agree , but with the receiving team lining up 30 yards from the ball, how would that work?
Aussie NFL fan here; thought that a good change from 2023 would've been a huge penalty for the kicker landing the ball in the end zone or beyond (so boring to the viewer); other team to start at the 50, for example. Like the idea that the "fair catch" is eliminated. That gets rid of 2 possible boring bits of play. Will watch before deciding if I like or not
Kicking team used to be able to recover any kick that travels beyond restraining line at anytime. They can’t do that now.
yes on punts it can be downed w no touching ball or out of bounds kickoffs were a free ball touched or not just like it was a onsides kick goes far enough
Next year kickoffs will be removed from the game.
Na, they'll give it 3 years before they remove them. That is the goal.

@@brianhackett-jl3hcYour comment doesn’t make any sense 😂
@@RevitUp81 Are you familiar with the new kickoff rule? Not just the onside kick rule. Kickoffs have been completely changed. The receiving team no longer lines up 10 yards away from the ball, but 30 yards away. The kicker must land the ball in a "landing zone" and there are no fair catches, which will greatly increase the number of actual returns, as opposed to a touchback on 80% of kickoffs.
The original comment was "let men play football". My point was that this will increase the amount of actual football played.
Still confused?
Too many injuries on kick offs due to the speed and size of today’s players.
Things that I think will start to happen in the coming years:
Move the kicking team back 15 yards. That should allow for more run backs!
Thanks for the explaining the new kickoff. Looking forward to seeing how it works out. Regards from Australia.
Pretty soon there will be no contact at all! It all started with the invisible
Goal line what happened to landing in the end zone and earn a TD!😢
I like this idea better than the current solution.
Or....or, you can surprise them with an onside pass.
Good idea, but I worry about many games getting changed due to so much def holding and pass interference. Those can’t be automatic first downs on the 4th and 15 play.
The def holding and PI penalties are often tick talk or just plain bad calls.
I don't think I've ever seen a fair catch on a kick off. Punts, yes. Kick offs? No.
Excellent video! Wow, Maybe I’m gonna love the video replays of all the games more and more. What if it fails?
I mean, WTF?!?
i think you will see some players on the kickoff team dropping back to play "safety"
I think if teams start to break thru on a regular basis yeah 2 guys hang back as a 2nd line. Not leave it all on the kicker. Which maybe start to see larger kickers to help with tackles
Finally. I mentioned this the first I started to watch. 2011. And now they changed it. About time.
Just what we need, another complicated rule with 22 men all moving at the same time!.
NFL should become flag football and allow women to play too🤣
Might be too much grab ass
LOL
They will,
Non-binary QBs only 😂
Right why no more hitting
it's too violent for the woke wimps! Why do we listen to this fools
Lunacy… O starts on 30 on run back, 35, 40 on penalties… Three 12 yard plays, field goal! Completely different game than starting on 20… D had a chance of defending 80 yards, at least 50, required O getting multiple 1st downs… Todays world kickers kick 55 yards regularly…
Only thing worse is pass inteference call… Zebra misses push off TD vs penalty… Zebra calls foul on D instead of O, O gets 30, 40 yards and 1st instead of penalty… O gets penalty, D doesn’t get 30, 40 yards… Don’t know if receiver would have caught ball, stayed in bounds, not fumbled just assume the 30 or 40 and 1st… Why don’t we assume D would have intercepted for pick 6 when O pushes off… Shouldn’t they get the 30, 40 possible yards…
Just give 6… Expecting caught and run to end using current logic…
Zebras are just as important as kicker, qb end of game with current pass interference… New kickoff similar game changing menace !
Nothing to stop 1 or 2 safety guys from backpedaling to prevent the big runback?
Why don't they just start on their own 20 or 25with regular offensive play?
What happened to the kickoff ' return game? The Blocking for the returner is 20-30 yards upfield. There are no blockers around him. If the Kickoff Team was at least at the 50 it would give time to set up a return once the ball hits the zone or ground. This sounds so ridiculous.
This new kickoff rule is dumb. Why not just give the receiving team the ball on their own 20? No time wasted on the clock, which the networks will love.
Less injuries too
not as much as they love the extra commercial break after the kickoff.
Brodie, you crushed that. A+ on your video explainer. I'm now ready for SUM (kick-off) FOOTBALL!
It's football. It's never been about how hard that is to be hit. It's football remember where it started
Fewer head injuries, not less head injuries.
NFL players are an uncountable mass :D
Thank you for this excellent explanation. Seems like the O-line doesn’t have much time to spot the catch and turn and set for defense. As you mentioned, if a return gets past the D-line, it’s a clear path to the touch down. Really an odd rule change, but benefits the players health 👍. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s slightly modified and dialed in after a year of it.
Also, currently I think the touch back goes to the 30, not 35
That is correct.
Watching football since the late sixties and I don’t watch the game any longer, it’s terrible now , for multiple reasons.
Enjoy rugby or whatever. I’ll be watching the NFL.
@@kbones2 I don’t watch Rugby either, you said that , not me.
I would love NFL to have late 80s and early 90's rules today. it makes for a much better game.
There getting closer to RED ROVER- RED ROVER!!!! Let the players hold hands and the PA guy yell it! wusses!
You can't change rules midseason because some teams would be unfairly penalized based on playing style and personnel.
Make it a single point, and make the field 110 yards long, and also wider. And add an extra player on each side. Then we could call it "Canadian football." It would definitely be more exciting than the NFL.
@@keithsolomon1350 Yeah. We can take a down away whilst were at it. Lol.
0th and 10, or 12, or 15, or whatever. It would be way better than what they actually decided to do.
Or Or! They sold the Landing Zone for certain companies or top companies to put their logos and such
I wish they had some the 4th and 15 play instead.
Why don't they just play flag football? Wouldn't want anyone getting a Boo-boo.
Congrats mate. Got yourself a sub from Christmas Island &Australia.
Go watch tennis
@@Tecumseh4-k2z Almost as boring as watching an NFL kickoff.
Analog sounds so much better to me than digital. It's just so much warmer.
Every team starts on the 25…end this madness
The madness was the charade of every kickoff going through the endzone or being downed in the endzone. This puts the action back into kickoffs.
Potentially exploitable is that the receiving team can’t fair catch
They will likely just kick it through
I haven't watched a game since about 2002. If it's not broken, don't fix it. The offense is turned around and they will get more injuries. The defense has a 5 yard head of steam before they make contact.
Return to the original rule for onside kick to increase interest in late game drama
