If you have played the original 2003 release of Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom and have remembered it fondly then it is a no brainer to pick up this game. It’s just how you remember it with a few bells and whistles to help streamline the gameplay and with a $25 Canadian price point it ends up being a must-buy for any Spongebob fan, despite the remaster being a little rough around the edges at some points.
Now those are my super quick thoughts on the game so if you came here wondering if you should buy Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated then you can stop watching now because the answer is a resounding yes. The rest of this video will be a more in-depth look at my thoughts on the game.
Here is some general information on the game. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom is a platform video game based on the Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, developed by Heavy Iron Studios, AWE Games, and Vicarious Visions, and published by THQ. The game was released for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube consoles as well as separate versions for Microsoft Windows and Game Boy Advance. While the versions released for consoles were a 3D platformer, the Microsoft Windows version of the game is a mini-game compilation, and the Game Boy Advance received a 2D platformer version.
All versions of the game feature an original storyline, in which the player attempts to defend Bikini Bottom from an invasion of robots created by Plankton with a machine called the Duplicatotron 3000, playing as SpongeBob in all versions, as well as Patrick and Sandy in the console versions. The series' voice actors reprise their roles, with the exceptions of Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs and Ernest Borgnine as Mermaid Man, with both roles instead of being voiced by Joe Whyte. The game was released on October 31, 2003, in North America and in Europe on November 28, 2003.
Although becoming a major commercial success, Battle for Bikini Bottom received mixed or average reviews according to Metacritic. Edge included the Game Boy Advance version on its list for top handheld video games of the 21st century. The game has since also gained a cult following and a large speedrunning community presence.
A remake of the home console versions, titled SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, was released on June 23, 2020. It was developed by Purple Lamp Studios and published by THQ Nordic for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It includes a multiplayer mode and cut content from the original game.
The core gameplay involves collecting items and defeating the robots which have attacked various areas in Bikini Bottom, while crossing platforms and avoiding environmental hazards like spikes and flames. Some areas require different characters to beat, as each character has their own unique abilities. The player can control SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy. Switching characters requires the player to find a Bus Stop, upon using which the current character will switch to another, and using it again will switch back to the previous character, giving the player an option of two characters in each level. The default character throughout the game is SpongeBob; Sandy and Patrick do not share any levels as playable characters.
Throughout the game, the player will collect Shiny Objects, Socks, and Golden Spatulas. Shiny Objects are dropped by enemies and scattered throughout levels, and can be used to pay clams to progress through levels and unlock extra challenges. They can also be traded with Mr. Krabs for Golden Spatulas. Socks are placed in levels in harder to reach locations, and 10 of them can be traded to Patrick for a Golden Spatula. Golden Spatulas are used to unlock new areas in the game, and 75 of them are required to fight the final boss.
A new addition to the remake is a multiplayer horde mode in which two players face waves of robotic enemies. The mode includes cut content from the original game, including a fight against a robotic Squidward, a scrapped version of Patrick's dream, and a cut phase of the Robo-SpongeBob fight. - เกม

21:07 the reason why Mr Krabs's voice sounds jarring because when the game was originally released Clancy Brown couldn't voice the character because he was doing voice lines for the main villain in Jak 2.

Awesome video! It really seems like the devs did an awesome job with this remaster and I'm glad that fans are enjoying it. I emulated the first 4 hours or so a while back (Don't tell the cops!), and I decided it wasn't really doing it for me. It was fun, but I haven't had any urge to pick it back up again, and I'm a little disappointed by that considering how much everyone seems to be enjoying it.
I'm a relatively new fan, but you really won me over by defending Unity, which is one of my favorite games, and not just in the AC series, lol

just how you remember it. lol. they ruined sand mountain with the speed blur and all the haze, and they ruined the robots by making them impossible to be hurt by if you are actually playing the game.

I'm glad my friends dont own this game so I cant play that multiplayer, but I at least wished it had an optional online/couch co-op for the story mode, but have the camera be like any other online free roam-ish game and each player had their own camera, unlike that multiplayer mode, could've been a lot of fun
That’s a great idea! The community for this game is pretty hardcore so I wouldn’t be surprised is someone eventually created a mod for it.

About the sign thing in the cave with Patrick. They never actually tell you how to do the stun move, just to stun it. That was a bit frustrating for me. Then when I looked it up and learned how to actually stun, I was able to easily notice it later in the game.
Oh maybe they patched it because I was told directly how to do it.

It's definitely a simple game to play really. I've 100% the game a few times since this rehydrated version came out. Its a game that is something to play when coming home and want to relax. The main issues that I'm not sure if they got fixed(but weren't really an issue for me) was I guess for some people they couldn't collect 100% of the golden spatulas if you didn't go in a certain order. However, it wasn't an issue for me, the game worked out pretty good for me. I'm sure at this point that might have been fixed already. Besides that I think the game is pretty good. Also, that double A thing, hopefully they fix that a bit(or maybe they won't?) since apparently the original of this game was apparently a classic game for speedrunners. The double A feature certainly makes speedrunning much different from the original.

Playing this on ps5 I let my non gamer wife have a crack at it. In the beginning there's a gate that requires 15 spatchulas. She accidentally glitched through this gate 🤣🤣

I was loving this game and then it crashed on me, deleting my save file. Haven't played it since
It's amazing how terrible the multiplayer is. Combat is a serviceable thing that breaks up the gameplay for pacing, but it's not the focus.
So making that the main thing in a multiplayer mode is such a strange decision that I don't understand
There was fast travel in the original also.
I played the original Xbox version back in the day (still have the disk) and it’s one of my favorite games. The remake was really fun, but it had a few problems. One of them is that it’s easier with no option to increase the difficulty. There were a few points where your bubble bowl would go the wrong way because it hit a tiny change in elevation. I also didn’t like how now Sandy’s lasso just flings you up when your on one of those Texas things. I did like the quality of life improvements here and there.
Here’s what I would have done for the remake: have it be like the MCC where it’s running on the old engine so you can switch the sounds and visuals whenever you want. Work with modders and some of the old devs to bring back the cut content they promised. The visuals look beautiful but it doesn’t look like Spongebob, I feel they should have tried to improve what was already there while making it look like the modern show. They should have also added a level editor so people could make their own content.
Is there any news on if they are going to port the original game to newer consoles/pc? Also, is there any news on them properly adding the cut content back into the game, making a sequel, or proper mod support so it will be easier to import custom assets and levels into the game?

So here’s the thing.
The rehydrated version does look better in the surface, but the animations have less heart and care in them.
The enemies work the same and the targeting system makes life easier for the small guys, the Patrick boss fight is a joke because of it, and the Tar-Tar’s hit box doesn’t cover all of him.
And the physics of SpongeBob’s jump has been destroyed. He sinks like a rock now when ever you jump and the bubble wand spin that use to keep you in the air is not helping at all anymore.
I won’t say it’s a bad game by any means, obviously as you said in the video the game is great, but there are some “quality of life” things from the old game that got cut or forgotten, and some “quality of life” things that take away some of the great aspects of the original.
Ex: one of the things that was so amazing about Robot Patrick was how terrifying it was to fight a boss who used projectiles that you couldn’t see. You were running for your life from him and it really felt like if you stayed still, you would die! Now you can just stare at him and just move over a smidge during that scene and just be lazy about it without worrying about it at all.
I understand it’s for kids and they want to make it easier on them. But I played this game when I was 5. I beat this game when I was 5. It wasn’t that hard to begin with, and when it was hard, trial and error could get you through anything. So no, I didn’t like the Rehydrated version. The only reason I have it and play it is because my dad owns the original Xbox, and I am a broke college student who doesn’t have the money for one, so rehydrated on the Switch is what I have for now.
I won’t say I don’t recommend if you’ve never played, because if you haven’t played it before it is a fun trip. But for those who have, it’s not nearly as good as the old one. This version holds you hand through everything. Less of a battle, more of a bop on the head.

Agree with a lot of what you had to say. My opinion on the Remake as a whole, is that is still needed time in the “oven”. There’s just so many weird bugs (at least on console$ , and missing little details that make the game feel unfinished, especially in comparison to the OG release. I might add this is how I feel, even after the lady’s patch. I still think the 2003 version is superior, even with its graphics. The 03 version, with its more simple textures, actually resembles the show a lot more. SpongeBob is a 2D show, so simple things like foliage being flat textures in the original, give it the personality of environment you could see actually being in a episode. Character models are definitely superior in rehydrated, and I like the quality of life improvements. I just wish the team had a lot more time to finish the game, 10 months was just Barley enough. Nickelodeon and Paramount are awful for demanding the game come sooner, just because the newest movie was coming out.

I feel like no one notices the little details like the removal of the original smooth teleport box animation or how the characters made a funny noise when you hit them. Not huge, but combined with what you said I still prefer the OG. Also the sliding felt realllllyy slow to me

My pals gave me shit for getting hyped for a remaster of a kids game, but fuck I have a nostalgia boner for Battle for Bikini Bottom. Definitely easier now than when I played it as a kid, but nevertheless I had a lot of fun playing this remaster

I doubt I ever will. I haven’t played the game but have no intention of playing it. I was unfortunately spoiled and don’t worry I’m not salty about what they did with the story I just don’t think I’d want to pay full price for it. Maybe if it goes on sale down the line I can do a “3 years later” style of video.
@@ThatBoyAqua Smart choice. The game is a one time experience and it doesn't really deserves a full price tag. As for the story i'm trying to be open minded but the truth is they messed it up pretty bad.
I personally don’t like where they went with the story either but I think if we judge it based on how well it delivered the story it was trying to tell I can say that they did a pretty good job even if the type of story and the direction of that story was not to my preference.
@@ThatBoyAqua Well the story was delivered good given that it is a naughty dog game of course but tbh it had many flaws like forcing you to play sections of the game you didn't want to on a cliffhanger and having many unrealistic things and moments. I'm not gonna say so i don't spoil it for someone else but you probably know what i'm talking about. Overall if this wasn't a sequel i would have liked it more but given that it is and probably on the best game of all time i 'hate' it in some way. At least that's my opinion on the game. For me it's the most depressing game ever made.

The void joke is meant to be Patrick's brain. It's simple, open and void.... Nothing is in there. And it's also a slight reference to the dream episode from 1999 where Patrick's dream is just white nothingness.
The main issue of this game is if you are a retro gamer and don't care about graphics. Cause other than the graphics improvements (for the most part), this doesn't really do anything to improve or make it better than the original.
In fact one thing that is worse is the speed of characters. Characters are slower in the rehydrated game. Not unplayable, but makes me want to go for the original instead.
There's also a lack of polish in rehydrated. The red text in the pineapple looks off, there's fog where there weren't before, you can't jump on the invisible boat mobile when it's invisible and so on.
But if you don't have an older console, rehydrated is fine. It's perfectly serviceable. I just can't say it's the best version

@@ThatBoyAqua off the top of my head. Spongebob doesn't yelp when hit by the safe for the damage tutorial. No music box in patricks house. When you go in and out of the imagination boxes it just goes to a black screen instead of making you jump out. the floor in the downtown lighthouse just magically disappears instead of breaking. There's more. But thats what i can remember off the top of my head. The channel ghabulous ghoti has a LP of it theyre doing and they cover a lot of the changed things. Some other things is the system that puts you back on the map after going out of bounds is really bad and likes to put you back out of bounds. And the slide controls are just ugh.

@@ThatBoyAqua another thing. You mentioned mr. Krabs takes more shiny objects. another thing is the high tier combos are gone. I think it only goes to super-momster combo. Higher tier combos like the super-ultra-mega-monster combo are just gone. Which if you dont know the combo increases (i think multiplys) your shiny objects.

I just hate how they made it easier than it needs to be. One of the things I really appreciated about the original was the fact that it was still challenging to play. I understand that this is a kids game, but they really didn’t need to make some of the mechanics of this game easier than it already was. A prime example of this is Sandy’s swinging ability.
Other than the fact that it isn’t as challenging as the original I absolutely love the remake though. The updated visuals are really well done!

IGN and Gamespot foreal had the worst reviews of this game. Its a fucking kids game and when it comes to old games like this to be remastered they become absolute morons and freeze up because there so used to and spoiled by todays games.
