I remember first reading MHA, and I saw her. Alien or not, I like Mina’s character design. It’s really unique. I saw her design and I thought “Whoa! She looks really weird! But also pretty cool!” Her design uses bold elements, like the way her eyes look, her pink skin and the little tiny horns poking out of her head. But that bold design compliments her bold and outgoing personality. Also she is my favourite character. Edit: BOLD! I WANTED TO TYPE BOLD PERSONALITY AUTOCORRECT!
I mean she is also pink, a colour which symbolizes love and affection and understanding and all that other sappy stuff, and throughout the show the has been one of the best emotional support characters out there when someone gets a depression. So yeah basically the opposite of Bakugo's design.

I believe Hori-sensei mentioned that Hanta really admires an American hero that shoots spiderwebs from his wrists. So yeah, Hanta is a Spiderman fan confirmed.
The ability to zip with a long sticky shooter is certainly there tonidncjate inspiration, but theres not much else. Given spider man has super strength, the ability to climb walls, and spider sense (premonitions), and pretty smart (genius level depending on source), then sero doesnt fulfil that at all. Even then, the spider webs that spiderman uses arent naturally created, simply a chemical he invented and shoots from mechanical devices.

Before watching the show I was always confused why the costumes and everything looked so ridiculous. And then, when they got their costumes and the show explained how they had designed them themselves, it all made so much sense. As a friend put it, "Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what you would expect a bunch of fourteen year olds to design if they were making their own hero costumes."
Most of them don't look ridiculous to me especially considering that they are cartoon super heroes obviously in real life it wouldn't work as well because they wouldn't be practical.

My other favorite goofy name design combo is manga fukidashi. Yup, his name is just manga, and his head is literally just a speech bubble. And his family name translates to speech balloon... although what's kind of cool is that almost all the names in the series have double meanings. Like how manga name in Japanese is not written ths same as manga (the comics) and the altered spelling could also be interpreted as "I am a cartoon." Whether this makes it better or worse I do not know. It sure does make it funnier though

Fits her personality Tetsutetsu: literally means "steel steel" Hagakure: came from the word "gakure" means "hidden" like her quirk Tokoyami: means "eternal darkness" while "fumikage" means shadow, fits his quirk. Sero: came from "cellotape" Sato: literally means "sugar" since his quirk is sugar rush Iida tenya: came from "idaten" some sort of japanese God that can run fast. Tsuyu: means "rainy season". Make sense since she's a frog Yaoyorozu: means "eight millions" or "countless things" because she can create countless things Shoto: the word means "burn and freeze"

Also Tokoyami. You see a bird head and you'd think, he must be able to do something bird-like. Nope. He's a Pokemon Trainer fused with his Pokemon. Mutations seem to be passed down to children even if the children get a different quirk.
kenmasapplepi endeavor actually doesn’t have fire hair he’s just using his quirk to make him more scary/ intimidating. He also uses it to hide his scars. Just like how bakugou has grenade gauntlets it’s just so people look at him and go, oh yeah fire powers

Ngl tho, In character design, Artists have always been taught to be able to communicate what the characters are like from a single glance and I think that especially applies on MHA especially since it's about heroes and those tend to be pretty on the nose as it carries that as its trademark of sorts. It aids their writing as much as mob's simple design aids the writing for his story, So I actually personally appreciate the designs in MHA funny video nonetheless lmAO

In the anime goblin slayer. Nobody has names. Just titles, nicknames, etc. Can you imagine having all might on your birth certificate. So this is better than whatever naming system the creator of goblin slayer use. there's literally a woman named "High Elf Archer" in Goblin Slayer. And Goblin Slayer, guess his name.. it's Goblin Slayer.

Denki Kaminari literally means Electric Thunder. Uraraka is literally just a description of her personality. Yaoyorozu means 9 millions of something (I think) so literally her quirk. The kanji in Shoto had means that can translate to Hot and Cold. Horikoshi just fucking around at this point
I feel like the actual title should be "Is non-subtle character design a bad thing?", because in my opinion, the over-the-top obviousness of the character designs really fit in to a world where things like superpowers exist. They add a layer to the wonder of that kind of world and guessing what kind of quirks the characters might have is also part of the fun.

Just my own opinions! (Manga and Anime spoilers) I love the character design in BNHA. Even if it's not subtle, there are other things behind them. For example: Todoroki's past, yes. He is scared, more noticeably than others. Anyoje could see that with the way his father handles anything. On live T.V. With villains. However, nobody knows to the EXTENT that Todoroki is scarred. Midoriya is also scared less noticeably. (Mentally, physically). He was bullied by someone he thought was his friend for twelve years, all because of something he couldn't control. Mentally, he sees himself as weaker than Bakugou, but is determined to surpass him. It's not about revenge for him. Bakugou has an (somewhat) inferiority complex (Seen later on, because of Midoriya )(also see Catra in She-ra reboot (2019), who becomes the same way in seasons 2-3). He wasn't good enough. He wasn't strong enough. There wasn't anything he could do. He's treated like a villain by everyone. These mental breakdowns would have never been a thing, had the characters stuck purely with their designs. Other things I like about the characters is that they go with their designs so perfectly, with flaws and all. They make sense, but that isnt all there is to them. Kirishima, for example. Nobody would have guessed he's actually really self conscious and insecure just by looking at him. Nobody would have guessed that Uraraka was struggling financially. Nobody would have guessed IIDYA, of all people, would seek revenge. But at the same time, it's all there within their design, I guess. They all help others. Iidya, with whatever it takes. Even if it breaks rules. Uraraka, the honest way. With hard work (and doesnt bend the rules too often). Midoriya, with whatever it takes. Even if it means giving up his own dreams. Theres more to the characters than just their designs, so MUCH more, and I think that's amazing. (Idk I stayed up till two last night and I'm exhausted as all hell. That probably didnt make sense)

I believe Hori-sensei mentioned that Hanta really admires an American hero that shoots spiderwebs from his wrists. So yeah, Hanta is a Spiderman fan confirmed.
The creator was probably looking for a way to include a web slinging character in his story without ripping off spiderman.
The ability to zip with a long sticky shooter is certainly there tonidncjate inspiration, but theres not much else. Given spider man has super strength, the ability to climb walls, and spider sense (premonitions), and pretty smart (genius level depending on source), then sero doesnt fulfil that at all. Even then, the spider webs that spiderman uses arent naturally created, simply a chemical he invented and shoots from mechanical devices.

Before watching the show I was always confused why the costumes and everything looked so ridiculous. And then, when they got their costumes and the show explained how they had designed them themselves, it all made so much sense. As a friend put it, "Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what you would expect a bunch of fourteen year olds to design if they were making their own hero costumes."
Most of them don't look ridiculous to me especially considering that they are cartoon super heroes obviously in real life it wouldn't work as well because they wouldn't be practical.

Like how manga name in Japanese is not written ths same as manga (the comics) and the altered spelling could also be interpreted as "I am a cartoon." Whether this makes it better or worse I do not know. It sure does make it funnier though

Ngl tho, In character design, Artists have always been taught to be able to communicate what the characters are like from a single glance and I think that especially applies on MHA especially since it's about heroes and those tend to be pretty on the nose as it carries that as its trademark of sorts. It aids their writing as much as mob's simple design aids the writing for his story, So I actually personally appreciate the designs in MHA

I feel like the actual title should be "Is non-subtle character design a bad thing?", because in my opinion, the over-the-top obviousness of the character designs really fit in to a world where things like superpowers exist. They add a layer to the wonder of that kind of world and guessing what kind of quirks the characters might have is also part of the fun.

Just my own opinions! (Manga and Anime spoilers)
I love the character design in BNHA. Even if it's not subtle, there are other things behind them. For example: Todoroki's past, yes. He is scared, more noticeably than others. Anyoje could see that with the way his father handles anything. On live T.V. With villains. However, nobody knows to the EXTENT that Todoroki is scarred.
Midoriya is also scared less noticeably. (Mentally, physically). He was bullied by someone he thought was his friend for twelve years, all because of something he couldn't control. Mentally, he sees himself as weaker than Bakugou, but is determined to surpass him. It's not about revenge for him.
Bakugou has an (somewhat) inferiority complex (Seen later on, because of Midoriya )(also see Catra in She-ra reboot (2019), who becomes the same way in seasons 2-3). He wasn't good enough. He wasn't strong enough. There wasn't anything he could do. He's treated like a villain by everyone. These mental breakdowns would have never been a thing, had the characters stuck purely with their designs.
Other things I like about the characters is that they go with their designs so perfectly, with flaws and all. They make sense, but that isnt all there is to them. Kirishima, for example. Nobody would have guessed he's actually really self conscious and insecure just by looking at him. Nobody would have guessed that Uraraka was struggling financially. Nobody would have guessed IIDYA, of all people, would seek revenge.
But at the same time, it's all there within their design, I guess. They all help others. Iidya, with whatever it takes. Even if it breaks rules. Uraraka, the honest way. With hard work (and doesnt bend the rules too often). Midoriya, with whatever it takes. Even if it means giving up his own dreams.
Theres more to the characters than just their designs, so MUCH more, and I think that's amazing.
