  • Called "Le Buttereau à John" back in the day by locals (and still by some today, but otherwise known as "Le Buttereau" or "Petit Etang Beach" depending on you you speak to and/or their connection to the area.
It's where the Cheticamp River greets/flows into the Gulf of St. Lawrence which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Some can be seen fishing here for Salmon, Trout and Striped Bass. In the nicer, warmer days of summer and early fall, it's a popular picnic'ing spot, swim in the warmer river section then run across the strip of gravel for a cool dip in the salt water..or vice versa.
Once upon a time, the main road made it's way here and over a small bridge which served as a connection from the small Acadian village of Cheticamp Cap Rouge community now known as the Cape Breton Highlands Park where the Cabot Trail runs through. On the northern side of the river lays the area & trail known as "Le Buttereau" where you can see several foundations of Acadian families, plaques are present that commemorate the former Acadian homesteads. My wife's father grew up on one of those old homesteads.
Where the river and sea meets, the tides are constantly pushing gravel and sand, reshaping a thin stretch which at times closes the outflow of the river...but not for long before the forces of water and weather opens it up for the fish to continue the coming and going, including Salmon returning to spawn further up the river.
The beach is still very much a local favourite!
    Thanks for watching!
