Just an update here! Spora has reclaimed the lead with a 7:29 run!
He did miss a text skip, but otherwise it was super clean.
Finally got around to watching this as well after watching your MediEvil video. Great coverage. Gonna add some more sidelore because why not :D
The race at 26:38 was my first ever race on SpeedRunsLive, and was delayed by around an hour because I was a dumb 15 year old who didn't know how to set up ePSXe, and also had very little practice on swim into Ripto. Yes, i genuinely had people guide me through the trick before the race so that I could actually finish when we started lol
Saboom and Touval's rivalry is also legendary as far as head to heads go in speedrunning. Witnessing them trade blows back in the day was mesmerizing, both averaging several hundreds of viewers and reaching the top of the SRL front page. I remember when Puppet found waterfall proxy too and how much that threw a wrench in everything.
Also shoutouts to Lapogne for pioneering god damn every playstation game known to man
Great video man, keen to see more
Have I ever tried speed running in Sypro? No. Have I tried speed running any game? No. Am I going to watch a 2 hour video on it? Yes. Yes I am.
I haven't gotten the chance to start watching yet, but I'm leaving a like preemptively because I know how hard you've worked over the last few months on this and how much you focused on communicating with everyone in the Spyro community to ensure that your video would be as accurate and detailed as possible. Good job!
Lapogne is such a speedrunning icon
He's responsible for some of the most incredible skips in dozens of games. I wish more people knew about his exploits
He's been in the mix for what seems like forever haha
I see Salt's videos have rubbed off on you a bit, and holy shit is that a good thing, this is a damn impressive video for a damn impressive run. Really hope that your channel can pop off thanks to this video, well done.
I appreciate that, thankyou!
I knew a Section regarding Gulp Skip was coming but when the Music hit at 43:04 i got chills, absolutely stellar Editing and amazing Documentary
no joke probably one of the best youtube videos ive ever watched, fuckin awesome shit dude
Thankyou! It means a lot!
I've watched a lot of speedrunning documentaries and this is probably one of the best I've seen. The narration and the script are spot on, and the story you were outlining really kept it interesting throughout the entire video. I had never heard of this game before and didn't know any of the mechanics, but I came away feeling like I knew the game in detail. Really loved it, would be cool to see more!
Thankyou! I really appreciate the feedback
Sorry what? never heard of Spyro!?!? oh god its happening I'm getting old.
what a banger video. Came here after watching the current WR, so during this vid I kept thinking "when does Bluntbows come in?" Can't believe someone just came in in 2021 and worked up that level of play so fast, insane
Pretty late but just got around to watching this. Awesome job capturing the progression of the game. Had a big smile on my face during the later bits of the video.
I had no clue that I would make an appearance at 1:24:17, at 57th place that is lol. Very good video; didn’t know much about the history of this category so I had no clue how many discoveries it took before we got to the route we use today. Thank you for making this; ended up watching this video all the way through!
my dude that was an awesome watch. i literally thought around halfway through, before the gulp skip part that i can't get any lower only to find out i was only halfway through the vid xD
i can't imagine the amount of work and time this cost. huge thumbs up, keep up the amazing work, dude =)
What. A. Video. Had it on in the background and after like the first 5 minutes, I quit what i was doing. Y'all had me HOOKED
Summoning Salt does not own the concept of explaining the progression of World Records, you don't need to ask his permission my dude, just be your own man.
For some backstory, I actually asked salt to make this video first, but he told he wasnt interested and suggested I make it instead.
It's funny seeing people talking about Summoning Salt like that not knowing that Salt is a fan of Pap lol
I do wonder why they don't remove load times in categories like this (or at least standardise them to 1 value, even if the run itself may have a faster or slower load). Even if the gameplay has some lag even outside of load times, surely removing load times would level the playing field more generally and not make it so brutal for certain systems. Since I've seen games that remove load times, but others that do not
Very cool vid btw, I saw the Punch-Out challenge video and then watched this one after and despite being 2 hours long it was a good watch and didn't feel like a 2 hour long video
Legitimately excellent video, I watched the whole thing in 1 sitting and it felt like only half an hour had passed when it wrapped up. Good job mate
Thanks mate! Appreciate it
My uncle used to speedrun Mario, I think the 2nd one with warps. Ever since I’ve been interested in beating games fast. I’ve never truly speedran a game but watching videos like this reminds me what I love so much about speed running; the progression. Ty for telling this story. It's funny watching a game you used to play as a kid casually be completely broken
Grats on doing this massive project. Thanks from all of us who watched.
Wow, this video was an absolute treat! Spyro speed running is incredibly fascinating and you’ve done an unbelievably good job explaining and documenting not only the history of the category, but all the little nuances that make up the any% route we have today. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this documentary! You have some serious talent. I hope you continue to make videos like these!
Y’know i was thinking about if someone made a video on spyro 2 speedrunning history yesterday, and now I know that someone has!
i'm watching this a second time because it's so well put together. definetly deserves more views!
This video was a blast: exciting, entertaining and gorgeously detailed from start to finish.
This video taught me so much history that I didn't even know about S2 any%. Gives me a new appreciation for my favorite category. :) (I totally forgot to send my comment when this video came out lol!)
So glad this popped up on my feed. Always love finding these videos going in-depth on speedruns for games I love. They're so fascinating and well researched. Great work.
Just finished watching this. What a masterpiece. Thank you for all your efforts you put into this, learnt a lot about the speedrunning history of Spyro 2.
One of the best speedrun recap videos I’ve ever seen, can’t wait for the next one!
This was a fantastic video, s2 is my favourite game of all time and I've had such an interest in the speed running community behind it and I feel this did all of that justice so I just want to say thank you for putting together this masterpiece! Keep it up
man, i love these speedrun history type videos, thanks for this gem pap
I must say I am agreeably surprised at how good those videos are, keep up the good work
My god. The effort involved. I used to make videos, so believe me when I say this I'm insanely impressed the everything that went into this.
God tier content. I'd advise you stick to this form of content on popular and interesting games that have speed runs. You will blow up.
Thank you for your effort.
Nothing makes me more nostalgic than seeing my favorite game from my childhood! Great video it's always awesome to see people still appreciate this game even after all these years!
This video is INCREDIBLE. I absolutely LOVE Spyro and I'm willing to do a video myself. I'll refer to yours in the future for sure. This was amazing, thank you so much. So much information and so well written.
This was an excellent video, and a great way to spend an afternoon. Full of context and nostalgia for those of us who played it when it came out, and enough back story to where I could draw a logical step from what I knew playing the game, to what was being done on screen.
Criminally underrated content. Really well put together. 👍
thank you TH-cam algorithm for recommending this masterpiece 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have super fond memories of playing Spyro 2 and 3 on my PS1 back in the day. Lots of hours of fun. The strats and the times are insane, hats off to all the runners for their skill and dedication. Thank you for a very informative and entertaining video!
Great docu mate, keep up the good work!
This is really well done man, you deserve more subs, looking forward to more good stuff :)
Great video. I didn't realise Saboom was one of the greats. You wouldn't pick it hearing him talk, he's super humble and never big-notes himself, rather spends a lot of time talking others up.
One of my top rewatched videos, thanks!
Great video been waiting for someone to do a in depth video like this
Both this video and the medievil vid are absolute gold. Thanks so much for your hard work. Subbed and liked.
Thankyou!
I have searched for this exact video several times in the last year and TH-cam has never given it to me! So frustrating
Damn,
I will now assume that there are millions just like you. TH-cam trying to keep me down lol
Hope you enjoy!
This was a great video deserves so many more likes and views! Keep it up man
I really like these speedrun history vids. More of these please.
Theres a few nostalgic ps1 games which i could make a video about, I started making another, but the community were not that interested in helping me research and the 1st runner i was talking to didnt respond to me after I tried to message him a couple of times. Its annoying, but ive made 8 minutes of that video... Ill complete it eventually whether people want to help me or not.
@@Papamanual I believe in you
Insane video, well done!
Great video. Thanks for 2 hours of informative content.
You make summoning salt proud🥲. Great video!
High quality video! Definitely deserves more views.
I was in a situation that didn’t allow me to get the full context of this video. Thank you for laying it all together
Very well made video! Great stuff!
I love this doc! I'd love to see more for the other games
Very nice stuff here as well! Bravo!
OMG. Spent 2 days watching this masterpiece. Thank you so much for your work. Feel really sorry that not so much people can understand this. Great job
This made me want to play Spyro 2 again in the slowest way possible
Excelent work man!
Fantastic video! Would love to see 14 talisman or 100% get the same treatment.
Talk about a journey, honestly, I can't imagine the feeling of excitement, and even more so, relief, they had once Waterfall Proxy was deemed outdated.
I love/hate that you use how its made theme on the timeline. Damn that brought back memories
I noticed a cycle in speedrunning.
as optimisation increases, people start investing more effort into finding new strats and skips, which decreases optimization requirements for a great time. Then with time optimisation increases again, putting more pressure to find non-obvious timesaves.
It's such a beatiful cycle. It's what speed running is all about.
Great Video!
This video is too good to be real
now i have a great question do any of the speed run tricks work in the remasterd trilodgy that released a cupple years ago? im guessing maybe not sense it was i think a ground up remake rather than just an up res. i do know iv been playing the collection and enjoying it quiet a bit. also these guys are very impressive
Ive not played the remaster trilogy and know very little about it. I do know that there are some other glitches that completely break that game like walking in air or something.
That is a really great question :p
Most of the tricks and strats used in the original games don't work for Reignited. Like you said, Reignited is a remake from the ground up, so things like physics, collision, hitboxes etc don't work in the same way. Reignited has some strats of its own, but a lot of those tricks are stuff like glitching out of bounds or the Walk In Air glitch.
@@Kintsugi23 interesting it gives a reason to watch speed runs for both if both have different tricks and strategies it’s kinda neat to think of it that way where neither is obsalete and both still haveing a reason to exist and be enjoyed. I got into watching speedruns about a year ago and ever sense I just have love watching these guys do what they do live and in general it’s just so cool!
My god, this should have 100x times more views
Great video! well done
Very interesting indeed! Thanks!
Holy 2 hours? Guess I know what I’m doing tonight…
just finished it, amazing all the way through!
keep making these - forget all that other tatt
Awesome video. Summoning Salt summons you.
1:45:29 I just imagine him putting on some sunglasses and a joint after he said that to Dan lol.
How long did it take you to create this video and and how long was your script? Insane video. Loved it
Thankyou! Took me about 4.5-5 months but I could have done it faster if my work ethic was better. And it was 18,923 words
@@Papamanual That is insane. Thanks for putting so much work and effort into it. I don't know if you will do videos like this but if you do i can't wait to see them ^^ have a nice day
@@Ingenii80 Thanks for the feedback. I am working on another video now, but it isnt a world record progression (still video game essay thing though)
This is well made.
This was a really cool vid
You are very underrated man
Congrats to spora's 7:29 literally yesterday O:
I saw, crazy stuff. Didnt even use double frog.
I swear some of this B roll and music is from Spyro 3?? This is so well put together though I may be imagining things
Your channel is gonna blow up, and soon. You're making great content!
I've watched through this a few times so far and my biggest question is, can't you simply skip the bosses by finding the hub portals under the maps? If the hub portals are right next to the boss holes, I don't see why they can't be accessed just like Dragon Shores. I'm not a speed runner but since this game came out I knew about double jump and Sproder and a few things like that just on my own, not to the extremes the runners do, but I've learned a bit and would think the portal thing would hold true.
I actually asked this question when i was first learning the 14 talisman category a few years ago... Turns out the portals to skip to other worlds arent hidden below the map, they just flat out dont exist until the boss is beaten.
@@Papamanual Cool, thanks for the response man and once again great video 👍
do you have any plans to do a video on s1
Unfortunately I dont at this point
I don't really care about Spyro, but this video was really interesting and I hope you make more videos similar to this, I subbed just in case u do
i used to do this but never had a run get past the winter tundra waterfall
proxy into ripto... when i saw a short bit of gulp skip in your intro i want to try again
waterfall proxy sucks bc its very precise and if you miss.... well the setup is long too, so you lose once you miss once... reset
it was still fun doing runs until the dragon shores early fot fireballs :)
And then Spora came back for another clutch haha
Wow, that Retro stuff was a plot twist wasn’t it.
MADE A MOVIE!
Great video! Hopefully you got a pop filter after this?
need the algorithm to bless this
nice video
I blame Elora for making me almost be a furry
0:45 I'm fairly certain that 5 cost gem is blue not purple (and 25 is purple to me though it's less clear cut you can argue for pink).
That got me pretty confused, I'm curious to know if you're colorblind? that'd explain it =p
Im not colour blind, but Ive always called it purple as a kid. I did watch a streamer do a colour check - checking RGB and it is far more blue then even 50/50 red/blue sdo technically you are right, it is more blue than purple.
@@Papamanual Interesting, well always glad to know I'm right haha
I've always called it purple and the 25 maroon
@@kyab2815 I was very confused for a sec cause I'm french and "maroon" sounds like "marron" (which is french for brown) but apparently it's what we call "bordeaux".
Though it's not that =p it would have to be far more red. Though yeah it does have a bit of a redish tint maybe so you could argue for something like plum but the 25 gem is still very clearly in the purple area rather than towards the red.
@Laezar1 I though brun was brown in French
No idea if it’s this game or some other version of the game.. but my daughter (Lumilaura) broke a record for this recently, 37:19..something like that. It may not be this game, but I’m old so easily confused? 😄
Congratulations on your daughters achievement!
I dont follow the spyro scene to a large degree, but I believe Lumilaura got the world record in the prequel to this game "Spyro The Dragon"
You can watch her run here - th-cam.com/video/dpt3_vRwWVQ/w-d-xo.html
NOT where i expected to find my own dad???? hi dad!
@@lumilauraa Hi lovely.. it just popped up in my recommendations 😊
music at 43:05 ?? is that from Desperados ?
I believe i recently learned that it is 'stock music' from somewhere, but it's also the theme from Gulp's Overlook - the second boss in the game.
@@Papamanual interesting, it's also part of the first Desperados OST, I also think they used it on Buffy the tv show. Wonder where else was used
43:08 do my ears deceive me or was this part of the background OST for Terminator 3: The Redemption? else that, or Atari pinched some public domain music 😅
I learned that it is a stock soundtrack from somewhere
Wow, bloody Atari. While I have your attention, let me give congrats and thanks to a fellow Aussie for helping even out the old algorithm with some proper quality content
@@themaddbomba9799 Thankyou!
pls tell me the transition at 1:15:34 was intentional
I definitely did not make that one intentional lol. But its possible when i was making the video... I really liked it aesthetically for some reason.
imo, proxies are what make this run fun, a combo of skill and gamble... but mostly skill
Do a speedrun history on Wizards and Warriors 2: Iron Sword.
Best game ever made.
For people watching this in the future, i suggest watching "the man who broke spyro in half" after 43:34
Great Vid
Almost a year later and the world record has stayed the same
More PSX games, content is wonderful. perhaps do Crash 1,2,3?
Definitely would like to. I started a crash 3 105% one, but unfortunately havent worked on it in 6th months.
Where I wanted to start the story, the guy I asked info from didnt respond to me after messaging him several times, so I kinda lost motivation. I guess I can write a script around it, but its still a massive project I dont currently have time for.
That's when I saw her face
