      Ironically enough Maria was the victim in an episode that I think was shot in this exact location. She met a guy online and he said he was her age (a teenager) but he was actually in his 40s. Anyone know if it's the same restaurant or if it just looks alike?

      You’re right. From the get go we as a society “other” people with disabilities. For the most part society is on the outside looking in and not actually integrating with disabled people as far as school and work environments. Even if there is interaction it tends to be superficial and not go beyond the surface. They may be nice to them but not actual include or befriend them. To do so you have to really strip away that aspect of “other”.

      Maybe it was like that only at your school. In my schools, there were people with all kinds of disabilities in the same classroom, except the down syndrome kids were in a classroom of their own. To integrate them would not be that hard though. Just teach normally and give grades to the down syndrome students at the ability that they are. The students without down syndrome understand this, so there is no problem doing this for down syndrome students.

    • @ssharkbait
      @ssharkbait 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Cran1um92 what you’re describing definitely isn’t the norm. It’s not about just putting them in the same classroom but involving them as much as possible when possible. Like you mentioned electives are a good way, as well as after school activities and clubs. It doesn’t have to be a necessarily academic setting especially if the child isn’t at the same learning level. Even if the kids had lunch and recess together it doesn’t mean they are interacting. We had a kid in our class in 7th grade who took some special education courses as well standard curriculum courses. People didn’t understand how to communicate with him. He was ignored or bullied. The teacher wasn’t any help at all. It got so bad he was pulled from standard curriculum classes altogether. Our lunches were together with the special education students but they were basically ostracized. That’s why proactive and early integration is important. It leads to less stigma about those with various disabilities through proper one one one exposure.

One sorority actually asked our president why we had the "broken sisters" as our sisters. His response has stayed with me my whole life. Im so sorry this happened to you. God bless you sweetie. These things don’t go unnoticed, trust me, they will pay for what they did. Do the right thing, stand your ground and keep your head up. Smile and do what is right and kind. Don’t let their negativity change you. Be the light the world needs so much. I was bullied a lot for many years and this really touched me. At some point, I let it change me and I was sad and angry and ended up doing things I really regret. Please, don’t let them destroy you, that’s what they want.
      You’re loved and you deserve to be happy. Treat people with respect and kindness and always stand up for others when they’re going through the same thing as you did.
      I’m going to pray for you, I know how bad it hurts. But trust me, God is going to honor you. He changed me completely, I am happy and I no longer struggle with some emotional issues I had due to bullying. I met amazing people who were nice to me and so many good things happened. This is not the end, you have a beautiful life ahead of you. Don’t let those people ruin what God is planing for you. I love you and I care so much about you. Please never forget that you’re beautiful and so so so loved.

      I remember being in a modelling hobby store when a lady came in with her son. I had seen him at my school (he was third form/Year 9 and I was 7th/Year 13-last year) He had a form of ADHD and his mother was trying to introduce him to a hobby and give him something to focus on. One of the staff went over trying to do the usual push product on her but when the kid started growling and pulling his shirt over his head the staff member pulled a face and said "What a freak" and walked off. The mother was left looking distraught and the kid was confused. I went over and greeted him by name. I began showing him one of the starter sets and he sat interested. When he wandered off or growled or whatever I'd just wait for him to come back and then carry on. Eventually he was excited by the prospect so his mother bought him that box. She said to the manager "I was about to walk out after one of your staff was rude but this staff member helped he" the manager looked at me and said "He doesn't work here" to which the woman said firmly "Maybe he should!" and left with young Andrew. The manager gave me a dirty look and I just looked back as if to say "I wouldn't want to work with you anyway".

    Greek life, hearing it from my sister, just sounds so stressful. You're expected to go to parties that have alcohol and get along with fraternities that they work with. You have to devote so much of your money not just to get in but you're expected to spoil the new girls and make custom gifts out of your own pocket (on a college kid budget). And the hazing can get criminal. My sister had to leave after 3 years cause it was just too much.

      I assume your sister is in a white org....not all of them do what she says they do. Everyone has to broaden their horizon in terms of Greek life.

      I am so sorry she went through that. When is hazing gonna be illegal since it sounds like they always cross the line?

      I went to college and honestly Greek life only made sense if there was some form of emphasis. For instance, there are fraternities and sororities geared towards engineering, community service, pre-med, pre-law, etc. Those make sense to join. Social fraternities and sororities represent a form of elite classism that’s growing outdated. It’s expensive and you’re forced to put on an identity to match everyone else in those groups.

      That's not what mine was like at all. No alcohol was allowed at our events or in our house and the biggest expectation was community service, a philanthropy event each year and Homecoming. No hazing. I lived in the Midwest, and I've heard that sororities are very different in different parts of the country. Oh, and I was super shy so I used it as an opportunity to meet more people and serve in leadership roles, which was very helpful for me post-grad. I guess it's what you make it.

    I don't understand how there are people out there who can be so cruel. People with disabilities are not broken or less than. A bit of kindness, compassion and being open to learn can go a long way
