The Adder - A Cunning Plan? [Elite Dangerous Ship Review]

  • The Adder from Zorgon Peterson is the second cheapest ship that Zorgon Peterson will sell you - and unlike their other offerings, this one is marketed as a multi-role ship, with the ability to turn itself to any task, with possibly a few limitations.
Did Zorgon Peterson design themselves a competitor to other small multi-role ships like the Cobra, did the plans for the Adder turn out to be not so cunning?
Time to have a short look over this ship and review it, to see if it's a worthy addition to a hanger, or if it's a waste of money.

Hey there and welcome back to this instalment in a line of Elite Dangerous ship reviews that I've been working on. This time it's the Adder, which is a little bit of an oddball of a ship. It was a little touch and go as to whether I'd get this out on time, given a crappy cold and a few other bits, but we're here now and that's the main thing. Hope you enjoy the vid and I'll hopefully catch you on the next one 🚀

One of my favorite ships to fly in VR. Yeah I can hop in my beluga and fly around in an imax theater, but there's something really cozy about the interior of the Adder. I'm not nearly the first person to call it a space minivan. I always prefer to fly it when I'm doing missions that don't require much cargo space. Plus I've always felt it gets the retro spaceship vibe better than the FDL!

Thanks bud - it really does have an awful canopy design - one of the worst parts of the ship for me. Rest of it isn't exactly a looker either...

    The Adder is . . .
    avoidable.
Start by upgrading your starter Sidey, transplant everything to a Hauler asap and use it as a short to midrange explorer.
Then move on to the Cobra Mk III.
Don't thank me later, thank me now.

Avoidable sounds about right - it's got some decent aspects to it, but it's more an oddity to build and tinker with when you've got a shedload of credits in the bank and a place to store it. Although it is fun to accidently yeet into a station wall 😁

The Adder was my first ship after the Sidewinder. It was my first combat ship, and delivered me into affording my DBX and my Type-7 for exploration and trading.

Ah yes, the Adder. Outdone in cost efficiency by the Hauler, and outdone in performance by everything else.

I need to give Star Citizen another go at some point - tried it in the past, but had a few issues with it - mostly around crashes, but a few oddities with the controls as well. Hopefully it's been polished a bit more since the last attempt 🤞

I have never owned an Adder on my main account.
However... When I got my free Epic account, I decided to earn a bit more & get one instead of the Hauler?
    I like both ships BTW...
I really did like the Adder though!
Yes it is snub nosed, but It has character... Even the Hauler has character...
My origional hauler now lives at Diaguandri my old home, just in case i wish to ever visit the Jameson crash site if i am in the area?
But I did really like the Adder!
So I would like to find a roll for it?

    • @gamingsnipsandbits
      @gamingsnipsandbits  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Best role? Add enhanced performance thrusters and then practice some fancy flying - look up @crimsongamer99 if you've not already any you'll see what I mean.
I'll give you it has character - which means I SHOULD like it more than I do. Hell the Sidewinder is one of my favourites, despite being the weakest ship in the galaxy because it has character.
I've just transferred my Adder to my carrier in 48 Tauri at the moment - which is where my Hauler lives most of the time too, along with the rest of the fleet.

Wait. Zorgon Peterson is owned by Faulcon DeLacy?? How did i not remember this? I'm a little bit obsessed about Elite lore, and have been since the original Elite, but somehow this slipped my mind. I'm particularly surprised because DeLacy and ZPG have such different design aesthetics, but it makes sense that Delhi wouldn't want to mess with a good thing too much. They may want to have a talk with the ZPG engineers about not putting canopy support struts right in the pilot's view, though. 😉 Looking at you, FDL...
I've never gotten around to buying an Adder. I went straight from the Sidewinder to the Cobra Mk III to the Alliance Crusader (don't judge - I wanted a ship that could have 2 copilots and SLFs), then Vulture, Python, etc. Much later I picked up a Hauler on sale just for fun, and occasionally use it as a bubble taxi. Eventually I'll get an Adder as a weekend project ship, bit not until i figure out what to do with the Mamba that's been gathering start in storage since i bought it a year ago...

My ship progression in this game.
    1) Everyone starts with the Sidewinder I used mine to poach off kills from security in Rez zones to make some quick cash.
    2) Next ship was a Cobra, used pretty much the same way as Viper just did it better and allowed me to make enough for my next ship.
    3) Next ship was Asp Explorer... great multipurpose ship, used it for a bit of poaching, some light mining to make cash, while that was still a thing... nowadays its my ship I use for runs out to the shard planets and when I need to jump a fair distance and tighter landing spots.
    4) The Python, great all around ship can carry enough punch and has enough defense for most Pve situations. Can do a decent amount of mining... I probably made more mining in this ship than any other in my fleet. Python can do just about anything you need it too.
    5) Next I grinded out Imperial rank to get a Cutter... because, well why not? Who doesn't want one? Huge capacity for hauling runs... you can use it for mining, but why would you? Waste of a darn sexy ship and a Python is more manuevable for cracking open asteroids. Mainly I use it for hauling and for something pretty to look at.
    6) Fer-De-Lance, for specialized combat, shes quick, agile and can pack a punch... not my first pick for jumprange though.
    7) Bought a Courier, toyed with the idea of making a quick hit and runner... but never really worked the way I wanted it to.
    8) Type 10 Defender, bought this when the whole AFK Rez missions thing was happening, cost over a billion credits to mod it out conpletely... probably made over 5 billion back, until I got bored setting up all the mission stacks needed to make it worthwhile... I was spending so much time going from station to station setting up missions it just wasn't worthwhile anymore.
    9) The Anaconda, recently got interested in the idea of getting away from it all for awhile and heading out into the black for exploration and exo biology.... finding I enjoy it alot more than I thought. Ship has everything I need for long range exploration. 70 Ly laden jump, 2 auto repairs, repair limpets, 2 SRV's, a mining laser for materials, a small 3a shield for rough landings, couple of heatsinks, DSS, extra 32 tons of fuel for 500ly range between refuels, 7a scoop, 4 ton cargo for limpet synth... might end up dumping the extra fuel for a fighter bay. Good ship does what I need it to do, no weapons cause they aren't needed. Landing the Anaconda in some exo spots in the mountains can be a challenge, but its not impossible... haven't had to give up on finding a spot yet, you just need to get a little inventive with landing procedures...

Sorry kid, you're all wrong, I'm afraid it goes as follows, at least in my current run:
1: Do several missions in Sidewinder and buy an Eagle immediately.
2: Buy an Adder and do some bounty and cargo missions until you can afford what is hands down the coolest ship that will ever grace Elite, the Cobra MK III.
3: A-Rate, engineer and use the Cobra for hundreds of hours until you have enough to afford one of only two ships equally worthy: The Python or Krait MK II.
4:Once you're rich, buy one of the big ships if you feel like it, not really necessary though.

It looks better, and has more modules than the Hauler....but it doesn't jump as far. It really doesn't do anything worthwhile that something else doesn't do better for a similar price. Road to Riches in done better in a Hauler until you can afford to upgrade to the DBX. A bit of a pointless ship...unless you are going to make a Vomit Comet.

    • @gamingsnipsandbits
      @gamingsnipsandbits  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think for looks, the Hauler edges ahead for me, but only just - it's basically two flavours of paint drying, but one is slightly more interesting.
That being said the Vomit Comet - that thing is a work of art to watch - and piloted by someone with far greater abilities than myself.
