This is great! As a 40+ skater, I love manuals because they are generally low risk. I can always get better at them by rolling farther or holding them longer. Plus I’m just starting to try tricks out of them. Manuals are awesome!

My goodness, i LOVE how you keep saying in many videos how tricks can take a lot of time to learn! I keep forgetting that and i recently was becoming more and more frustrated that i can't deal with the "easy tricks". It's good and refreshing to finally hear someone saying even the "easy tricks", like tic-tacs for example, still need time.
definitely! I think people don't realize any trick or skill labeled "easy" is just relative to the wildly difficult tricks that skating has to offer. Everything is hard 😂 but still worth the effort. I know that getting more realistic expectations personally really helped me not feel frustrated anymore🙌 Glad you got something positive out of the videos :D
A guy told me that whenever I'm cruising to get from point A to point B, I should find little cracks or other oddities (like a different set paint on the ground, short painted lines, or any part on the ground that's out of place from the rest) to manual over when I ride. Generally, these oddities are short, but trying to manual over them has helped tremendously with my manuals, and it's a pretty fun way to practise manuals everyday. I highly recommend it, and you end up building a habit of doing manuals wherever you find yourself riding around. On the other hand, when I am at an empty basketball court again, I'll definitely try to do some of those basketball court manuals !
that's awesome! Another great way to go for it too. I don't get to cruise much, but I did something similar. Just always bopping the nose up over cracks to make the ride smoother. Naturally progressed to trying to hold them as manuals. The few times I've cruised this year were actually after I started working on manuals, so maybe the practice subconsciously snuck in there! 🤔 Hope you get to enjoy some basketball court practice sometime. Nothing has come close to that for me in terms of fun manny practice 😃
When I was a teenager on my prime I was able to hold a manual through half basketball court, it was so amazing! I'm getting back to skating now and I really want to get back to that level! At the time what I noticed was that if I changed my center of gravity towards the back it helped a lot to sustain longer manuals instead of keeping the body with my mass centered and just using the legs. If feels like pushing yourself back! At least that was my mind blowing moment back then
been working on manuals like crazy for a week (mostly inside but a little outside) and it’s hard to see progress-videos like this are so comforting and encouraging for beginners to tricks like myself. THANK YOU 🖤🖤
I've been skating for 11 years now 'on and off' (mostly 'on' sk8 or die hehe). I say this, because I was just teaching my little brother the basics of manuals yesterday and I wish I could've shown him this video instead! I pride myself on being an alright teacher, but videos like this are AWESOME for anyone getting into skating, particularly from the perspective of someone experienced but still fresh such as yourself. Keep on rollin.
Great tips! I’m going to commit to daily stationary manual practice. I think like you say, doing low pressure practice is really helpful in many ways, building skill and confidence. Then progression feels natural. When I put pressure on myself and try to force things I’m so tense I can’t perform and fail at what I’m trying. Plus it’s not fun!
Can’t cap when things like that happen u lowkey gotta push through it cuz it’ll build ya ankle up aswell and after a day or two not hurt happens to be when I sprain a bit
I've dedicated some days to manuals thinking that I'll be taking it easy, but you're right it does work muscles I usually don't mess with. I end up walking like Bambi afterwards. Still working on building that kickflip muscle too. 😅
Every time I watch your videos, I wonder how you find so many deserted skate spots, parking without any cars and sports fields without any players ?! 😆 Not so easy in my town (Marseille, France). Apart from that, your videos help me a lot to learn and maintain confidence despite the difficulty of skatebording. I started a month and a half ago! Thanks !!
haha that's because I would go to these spots at like 7:30am or 8am before most people were out. Or, I would skate on my lunch break when it was about 0 degrees celcius and most people were at work/school. I could skate when others were around, but I only really filmed if I found it empty. So, it just seems like there are no people around 😂 I'm glad you're pushing through and finding confidence though! 💪

Ever since my two manual slams, I still get mini heart attacks when my tail drags. I started training a front foot stomp any time I felt that heart feeling. It's strange to use fear as a signal, but weeks have gone by now and I haven't slammed again on it. I was slamming because I was trying to bail off my board, but the safest way is to return to riding position and bend down. That way, if you're not gonna land right you're already low to the ground and the board is more likely to be in some control under your feet.
Manuals are my favorite thing at the moment after just a month of skating. I’m not comfortable yet at riding to even try Ollie’s, but your tips on kick turns on ramps and manuals really have helped me where I’m doing 180 kick turns on a ramp then trying to manual after it and rinse and repeat. I can get locked in for an hour just doing that and time flys by
Another super helpful video! The carpet manual practice rules helped get me through some unskateable weather this past winter, and sure enough, I’ve been improving little by little! I also love manual practice on basketball courts and concrete softball courts. I’m still learning slowly, but can sometimes get some pretty decent distance on them! Best of luck in your progression, and keep it up!
@@SarahParkMatott Haha, well, it’s pretty much the same material as a lot of basketball or tennis courts, but has the benefit of being a little less popular. This particular spot is also a little funny in that it has a subtle but meaningful slope. It’s mostly nice, but tricks feel very different going some directions vs others.
Hi Sarah! I just want to say thank you for inspiring me to start practising stationary manuals in my kitchen. The thing is, I live in a place that is non-skateable for about four months in winter, and realising that I can actually be on my board every day doing something meaningful, makes me so much happier about winter. I use a hard rubber mat that enables the wheels to roll, but have a pillow under the wheels that I lift, in order to not be a pest to the people downstairs. I am doing all the manuals I can think of every day: Normal, nose, feet together heel, feet together nose (hang ten), one foot L, one foot R, one foot nose L, one foot nose R (eight in total). I “keep score” by using a metronome at 120BPM (two clicks pr second) and count the seconds. For each variation I note the longest one every day and add these into a daily high score. I think “gamifying” it makes a huge difference in making it more fun and making me push myself. Thanks!
ah that's so cool to hear! I'm also back home with 6 months of winter myself and plenty of rain. So, I've been getting back into stationary manuals myself. Really happy to hear you've been able to gamify and keep yourself going through winter!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video these tips will come in very handy as I've been trying to improve my balance for this purpose I think manuals are such a useful trick especially useful if like me you occasionally land awkwardly on the board. Please keep up the great content and thanks again.
Keep on trying to keep that balance and holding the board for a while to get into position it will come back into enough consistency and timing the right rhythm to have a great time on practice these manuals!
Thank you for your video! I'm struggling to get long manuals but I practice them consistently since I saw your last video about them. I'm slowly getting there I think but they're definitely not easy! I'm always reluctant to commit to them while rolling fast because I'm afraid I'd fall back. But I find them to be easier after warming up with tic-tacs/monster walk and so on. Anyway, thanks a lot for your work, it's been a big help for me! :)
Thank you Arthur! You'll definitely get there. Warm-ups are honestly way too under-rated. My manuals are way better after I warm up :D Hope you get a good grip on them! I've also found that bending your knees more down helps a bit when starting to tip back. I end up doing like a 1/4 squat and it often helps me get the trucks back down.
Thanks for these valuable videos. I’ve been skateboarding for about 2 weeks. I can push okay and stay on the board ( even on one foot) and then push again and ride ok down inclines and leaning to turn. Still working on balance. I have attempted some tic tacs and manuals but they seem very out of reach at this point. Should I keep working on balancing and pushing and riding before attempting any tricks? I appreciate all your lessons.
If you have the patience, I would keep working on riding skills at least until you're comfortable tic-tacing, feel a better sense of balance and can easily lift the nose up and down while riding--think baby, one second manuals. The more comfort and confidence you have riding, the easier it'll be to learn tricks later 😃 Of course, if you feel like you can't wait, you can always end a session exploring a new trick to start testing the waters. But the comfort you build up first will help a lot!
ahhh same! The hop to manual and baby ollie to manual have been my first steps 😃 Can't wait until I can take it to a manny pad or something. First...I need to find a manny pad 😂
