We used to have this all the time - people who really should've known better trying to get around the front of loco's on tours. Normally we'd counter the situation by contacting the stopping points and ask the station staff to barrier the platform if they could, then bring the loco to a halt beyond that point. Simple enough to request and operate

    • @tomboychick

Yep. It's not a pretty way to die & even worse sometimes when they survive. My uncle was a signalman before everything was retired in favour of a control room miles away. The incident that has stayed with him most is when a terminal ill man with a brain tumor tried to end his life. He failed, but the resulting serious injuries this man suffered left him in an even worse situation. Half his face gone, smashed hip & a mangled hand attached to an arm pointing the wrong way, my uncle's heart just broke for the poor guy. It's impossible to even imagine his suffering before he threw himself on the tracks. God only knows how he felt after. When it came to trespassers on the lines, nothing would make my uncle more livid than those selfish idiots. He hated them. The number of times he had to stop all trains into the city for their safety, and when confronted, most of these idiots couldn't care less. Not even when told how some drivers had to give up the job because of the trauma they suffered. There would even be the occasional repeat offenders who literally couldn't give a s**t if they tried. It didn't matter how many times BTP arrested them, they would return. And nothing p****d my uncle off more than trainspotters during a heritage run. He often found these people to be the most rude & aggressive out of all trespassers. In their eyes, my uncle was the one spoiling everything by refusing to allow any trains to run. Nothing to do with them endangering themselves & others. As my uncle still fumes, he couldn't care less if these morons get themselves killed, but it's everyone else - directly or indirectly - who has to deal with the consequences.

The bloke in the four foot was clearly old enough to know better. You can see he stumbles slightly as he returns to the platform. If he'd fallen over and cracked his head on the rail it would have been curtains for the tour, he'd have been injured and a lot of people would have been very angry. All because of one selfish individual desperate for a photo. The people on the other side are telling them all to get off the line.
    People are idiots sometimes.

Interesting and ridiculous , perhaps the BTP need a patrol on these non flying Scotsman tours now also as they started I believe on the flying Scotsman since the chaos of the much reported 2019 tour that my brother working on Oxford platforms received in 3hrs late , then duly cancelled before the final destination , but maybe add an old GUV van painted in similar police class 47 livery on the back as a prison coach lol !😂
But Serious question now if the death further down the line happened in the video maybe from suicide , but had that poor person been hit by a steam service unknowingly (as no one cares what train in that particular sad mindset of death ) would mainline steam also be punished / more risk to bans instead just like it was a fully avoidable incident like in this video or similar ?
I presume it wouldn't be any more than culpable to banning or punishment like a diesel modern service but it would deffo send bad optics PR about steam tours almost as bad as steam train crashing in service ?
