- On 10/13/90 the Wynton Marsalis Septet performed for a crowd of 80,000+ at the National Stadium in Santiago, Chile.
Herlin Riley (drums) Wessell Anderson (alto) Todd Williams (tenor/clarinet) Reginald Veal (bass) Eric Reed (piano) Wycliffe Gordon (trombone).
"I remember playing a concert with Art Blakey in Chicago for a crowd that wanted to hear rock and roll. When we played they started throwing things on the stage.
I remember telling cats before we walked out on the stage in Chile, if they start throwing things on the stage be cool walking off. We started with a song everyone knew "Gracias a La Vida" I had arranged it the night before.
Then we went straight to the universal language, the blues. Cone played a phrase in his solo that sounded like a song the native crowd sang at soccer matches.
Then, and what I'm sure is the only time this ever happened in the history of music, all of the people began to sing that song which happened to fit the blues in the right place in the form. Normally a crowd has a two or three note chant but as you can hear, this song was involved and it took place over a chorus of blues. We couldn't believe it, and the rest of the set continued in that vein. People loving the music. We had never experienced anything like that before or after."

Yo estuve ahí ese dia. Lo único que había era ENERGIA !: Pura i Pura y viva. Los músicos alucinando- UNa dimbiosis entre los espontaneo y lo que ternía que suceder. Primero el Mundial del Rock que todos los músicoa entienfiron de primera y luego el brazo en alto.. Soberbia, negación, luego la libertad !
what happened; what like 6 hours into the concert after many great rock performances , Marsalis was playing for a mostly tired crowd so packed that there was no sitting room in the field. The crowd picked up on the musical similarity with an old 1962 world cup jingle ; that the band picked up on the desire to play to be a part was totally unexpected to the stadium. It was beautiful

This was a Rock crowd, but the magic of Winston Marsallis and his band could.It was impressive with 90.000 spectators. I saw this concert on Televisión here in Patagonia. Saludos desde Chile.
I was there. I witnessed a connection musicians-public rarely seen.
Me encuentro con muchas personas que recuerdan nuestra presentación en 1990 "An Embrace of Hope" concierto organizado por Amnistía Internacional para celebrar la libertad de Chile de la dictadura de Pinochet. La multitud fue cercana a 80.000 aficionados, principalmente de rock que inesperadamente tuvieron una respuesta muy positiva para nuestra música. Cuando abrimos con una canción nacional de sentido y significado, 'Gracias a la vida', fue un momento muy emotivo. Pero, cuando Wycliffe Gordon tocó una frase en su solo de trombón, que recordó una canción de fútbol, ellos cantaron esta larga canción correctamente en las armonías de los blues de 12 compases. Tiene que ser la primera y única vez en el mundo que un grupo tan grande ha superpuesto una melodía tan compleja en una forma armónica con precisión y de forma espontánea.

Años de años buscando esto....fue increíble estar en ese momento en el estadio....han pasado 21 años....no lo puedo creer, tanto tiempo....gracias Wynton y compañia por un concierto inolvidable.
Cuando estaba la cuarentena y la zozobra de la pandemia descubrí este video y fue una de las cosas que más me ayudó a sobrellevar esos días oscuros y llenos de incertidumbre. Larga vida al maravilloso jazz!

La primera vez en chile, lo vi nuevamente en Estadio Chile junto a Dizzy Gillespie... que enorme encuentro ... Winton, Gillespie y en estadio Chile lleno de significados...
Amazing, an unforgettable night! I was there, as a matter of fact while working for Amnesty we were staying in the hotel room next to you Winston.. I told this anecdote to Jason a couple of years ago and he remembered you telling him about this concert and how the people responded to your music and how you improvised based on what the people were singing (a popular 1960 song of the world soccer cup!! Thank you for your music and your solidarity with the people of Chile.

Solamente los vi por tv, pero no guastandome mucho el jazz, tengo que reconocer qué lo de Wynton marsalis debe ser lo mejor de Amnistía Santiago, como se extrañan los buenos músicos, que tiempos aquellos, me emociona recordar ese concierto., gracias Chile y al GRAN Wynton Marsalis por su clase magistral de jazz 😎

Notable! como bien dice Marsalis : Luego nos dirigimos directamente al lenguaje universal, el blues. Cone tocó una frase en su solo que sonaba como una canción que la gente nativa cantaba en los partidos de fútbol..... y esa cancion es nuestro Rock del mundial :)....minuto 22:30 aprox!

I watched that time on TV from Spain. I was able to watch live ypur octet (I think) in Barcelona... You signed on the cover of an album, but unfortunately the ink was erased throug the years, and I lost my treasure.
I still believe that was one of the two or three best concerts I've ever been. Maybe even better than Dizzy's quintet in Barcelona in 1980...

I was in Ft. Worth Texas @ the Caravan of Dreams when Wynton was still fine tuning "Majesty of the Blues". It was Wycliffe's first time out with Wynton. THIS is *still* my favourite version of the septet. I miss those days....
I was also looking for this for years, I was also there, a rock concert and Marsalis and his band connected with the people like family, It's was amazing. It happened again with Rob Halford the time he open for Iron Maiden,

La atmósfera que se crea a partir del minuto 23 de grabación es porque las 90 mil personas comienzan a corear el himno del Mundial de Fútbol de 1962, que con raíces de jazz, se parecía mucho a las melodías que tocaba Winton...
