- As is the case with Rainbow Mountain, Machu Picchu, and other popular destinations in the mountains of Peru, you’re likely to run into some fog heading to Pallay Punchu.

Pallay Punchu is about a three hour drive from Cusco.
The last section will be on a muddy road with no real markings, so it’s not an easy drive.

We arrived at 7:00am to fog so thick, we couldn’t see the peak!
Reaching the peak after a 30 to 45-minute hike, we could see the first signs of the striped layers of minerals in the mountains.
Layers of copper and iron create the turquoise and maroon stripes at Pallay Punchu.
There are veins of quartz running through, too.
Pallay Punchu gained the nickname “The New Rainbow Mountain” during the pandemic, when more people started to learn about the site and figure out ways to hike here.
The trail is well-marked. And while the peak is jagged with a sharp drop-off, the trail itself isn’t nerve-racking at all for people who don’t like heights. The biggest challenge will be the altitude.
The elevation here is about 13,000 feet above sea level.
