The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), founded in 1920, is a political party rooted in Sikhism and based in Punjab. It initially focused on the Gurdwara Reform Movement, leading to the creation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to manage Sikh religious affairs.
After Indian independence in 1947, SAD championed the formation of a Punjabi-speaking state, achieved in 1966. During the 1980s, SAD supported greater autonomy for Punjab but distanced itself from militancy after Operation Blue Star.
In the 1990s, SAD allied with the BJP, forming successful governments in Punjab under Parkash Singh Badal. However, in 2020, SAD ended its BJP alliance due to opposition to farm laws, refocusing on Punjab's issues.
