The hunting clothing companies have built a massive industry by convincing hunters they need expensive clothing. This gentleman is on point I’m subscribing. Our grandfathers hunted in flannel shirts and regular clothing and did just fine.
@@michaelbushey2787I got cold got down from the stand at 9:35 packed up my sticks checked my cam looked up and have a 115” state land buck 15 yards from me. All because I got cold.
I hunt in brown pants, a flannel shirt and a cheap pair of brown gloves from a gas station. Sometimes I wear a Carhartt hoodie. Killed a ton of deer sitting on a plastic milk crate. Don’t overthink it
Love this! I grew up hunting with the clothes I had. No expensive camo, no crazy "scent killing" crap. A lot of times in long jons, 2 pairs of jeans, 3 shirts, and a Carharrt coat. And I ALWAYS killed deer. I grew up poor as dirt, so I made due, and I never went hungry.
@@SamkoTradBow Jason what do you wear during turkey season, if you hunt turkey? Deer don't have the vision that turkey do. I'm not a huge believer in high dollar camo. Also like you I buy alot of my clothes from Walmart!
@@SnailHatan depending on the hunt you may need alot more. Backpack hunting in the winter would probably be the most expensive. And you don't want to cheap out when the temps get below 20 degrees. You'd need a tent too, sleeping bag, quality backpack. 600 down filled jacket. But i'm not bashing the man in this video, Walmart is not my favorite store but they have some good deals on a few hunting essentials. At least for spring, summer and fall hunting.
@@youngboyharless9769 the amount of people doing alpine backcountry hunts is a fraction of day hunts, or blind/stand hunts, or who hunt in non-frigid environments or where they aren’t packing up and down mountains. The crazy expensive stuff is niche, but because it’s cool people think they need it for a morning sit
The difference is in quality, fit and how easily it wears and tears. Same for all outdoors gears. But yeah, you dont need to spend alot of money for sure. But lets not pretend its the same thing.
My dad uses the same pair of camo he got from Walmart like 15 years ago. If you don't have room temperature IQ you can find durable stuff. The difference is in how breathable it is, and how light it is. In general with all outdoors stuff the cheap stuff usually only does one thing well, and the expensive stuff usually does everything well in terms of durability, weight, and adaptability. Also they tend to be quieter moving fabric.

If anyone wanted to really cut down on the costs I'd imagine that thrift stores might have plenty of similar (if not better) quality clothes that are perfectly serviceable for hunting, not to mention that they'd also be reducing demand from those third world sweat shops you mentioned at 14:44 and preventing perfectly good clothes from going to waste
@@CK-jb8qhI live in Pennsylvania but we are one of the big hunting states like Michigan but I live near Cabela’s so makes sense the Walmarts got more and it’s more rural and a lot of hunters here
This is a must watch for any hunter that’s willing to go against the “trend”. The Wrangler pants from Walmart have been great for me the past 2 years and they feel very similar to my First Lite pants that I paid 5x for. It will blow your mind once you start checking what hunting clothes priced at $$$ are made of compared to “normal” clothes priced at $ that are made of the exact same material/material mix. Great video as usual.
Good video. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the super expensive Sitka/first lite and so on stuff wasn’t made to be for tree stand, or more mild-climate hunters. Those companies started to serve guys that were hiking 9,000ft+peaks out west, away from the truck for 5+ days. In that situation, the 10% extra performance *might* be worth the 90% cost increase. It’s all about using the right tool for the job- kind of like how you don’t need an f-350 for hauling groceries. Yeah it’s cool, but it’s a worse tool than a cheap sedan (or whatever) actually for that job.
Not true I have their entire whitetail line. Stratus and fanatic. The best you can buy. And it will last me 10 years! Instead of buying flannels every year.
Absolutely and I hate doing what the masses do. Going from one fad to another. Be just as successful with limited gear and equipment if not better. Where I I hunt no one has the money to dump on all the latest and greatest.
@Blaze Mane It the same mostly everywhere. If you have ever viewed through a high dollar scope you would understand. High dollar scopes have higher quality glass you the difference is noticed in the low light situations. If you have no idea of your background shooting is a bad idea no matter the lighting, but high dollar scopes will allow you the identify your target and background in low light.
Need to save money on meat for the freezer...after I spend $3k on a rifle, scope, special sling, ballistic tip ammo, all Cabelas gear, brand name sock & scent blocking detergent...these people man lol. You shouldn’t need more than irons for almost anything on this continent. You’re just small dog flexing taking that 500 yard shot you silly impatient geese
I got my camo from the army surplus when I was a kid. I like camo and I buy most of my hunting clothes from Walmart. I can't see paying for the high dollar stuff. Thanks for the video
Growing up in the 60s and 70s nobody had camo people got plenty of deer. I mostly hunt out of a ground blind now. I take a blanket with me. I think it's burgundy LOL
@@unclefuddelmer9224 But, there was more hunters back then. Now a lot of people act like they are too good to eat anything that doesn't come from a store. I just shake my head and think about how much more I get. They can have ALL the soy I'll take fresh lean meat!
@Uncle Fudd, Elmer I live in southeast Ohio and there's many more whitetail than there used to be. When my dad was a youngin he hunted in flannel there was a 1 buck limit. Now you can kill 1 buck & 5 doe, or 6 doe. I will say that some deer are much smarter than others, usually ole mossy horns
Some of us countryboys from Missouri does the same since there is no bass pro or cabelas in the Ozarks, excluding Springfield..I was born and raised in a blue collar family, we couldn't afford expensive clothes..Makes ya appreciate the little things in life.....
I appreciate how practical and realistic you are in your videos. The everyday hunter can't spend $500 on a coat or other clothing and hopefully they see how budget friendly it can actually be. Love all your videos, Imo best hunting content creator by far, Happy holidays.
The Wrangler nylon pants are awesome!! You made some good point last year about not worrying so much about cotton. I’m not hunting the backcountry and my truck is usually not more than 2 miles away. That being said I started wearing more budget clothing last season and I have no complaints.
Yep im in cotton every single hunt. my buddies always shake their head in camp when im getting ready to hunt and im wearing cotton haynes socks, cotton undies, and cotton tee shirt. then put on fleece thermals, cotton pants, and cotton flannel shirt and go hunt. very happy with normal everyday clothes when hunting. they work great for me. especially when they come back to camp in their fleece and spend all night picking burrs off...lol
Thanks for the video. I’m going to change my shopping habits. Having a family with small children, money is tight so every little bit helps. Also I love you other videos. I’ve purchased the materials and made the lineman’s belt. Set up my lone wolf the way you have yours. As well as some other tips that you have given. Great content. Thanks. God Bless.
I’m in the same boat trying to prepare for hunting season this fall in the north east with my 8 year old son. He has a nice little hunting backpack and some basics but I need to go on a little adventure and get him more layers
I think of the 14 yr old mowi g lawn doing small jobs all summer to earn a few bucks so he can buy clothing to go deer hunting.this vidio helped him a lot.if he watches the sponsor ed vidio then thinks he has to wear what they wear .this I hope took some preasure off .thank you
Unscented and dye free laundry detergent is available in the grocery area for probably half the price of dead down wind, otherwise I buy regular clothes for hunting too! Most hunting camo is too loud.
Grest point! Only problem i found is the scent free normal stuff here still has uv brighter in it. If you can find stardard scent free without uv brighters that what you want!
I feel you my guy. I have hunted all my life and in many different climates. I have also used some of the high dollar, uncented camo stuff from Cabelas. Only difference my how much money I had left.
Great video. I am also a Walmart hunter. I think most hunting specific clothing is way over priced. I’m still using my old military gear I was issued. If you can find old military thermals or sleeping bags, they are good stuff
Yup! I use an M1950 wool shirt I was issued in Alaska, the old brown wool sweater, and the brown poly pro that was issued. Wore all of the above items with some wool pants (I bought) just yesterday while gun hunting at 18 degrees. Nothing wrong with Uncle Sam's hunting store!!!
I am getting into Bow Hunting always wondered about all the expensive 'hunting specific' gear. I grew up backpacking and hiking using modest equipment and thought it was weird you would buy a whole different set of equipment when you are in the same woods but happen to be holding a gun or bow. The only thing I see as an advantage with specific cloths is make sure it does not make a lot of noise when you move.
Love this video and the Cabela's one as well, totally agree on most things. One thing that sucks for us skinny guys is that the sweatpant-type athletic pants are super baggy, so they don't work well as a base layer. I actually solve this usually by buying the largest youth size thermals I can find. They're cheaper, and here in the South, a lot of "youth" sizes are as big or bigger than adult small/medium sizes.
I buy gear after season when it hits 75-80% off at academy. I got a bunch of nomad and drake non typical stuff. $200 jacket I got for like less than $30-40.
Tell u what me as a new hunter and I mean new just got my hunting license done is good to know that fancy means nothing when it comes to this. im glad I came across your video nice job.
Until you do a hunt thst needs top shelf gear or until you have the EXTRA money to spend on new gear put your money towards vacation days so you can hunt more!
I started wearing those wrangler poly/spandex pants you recommended $21 and love how comfortable they are . Like not wearing pants compared to jeans . Thanks for the heads up 👍
I use the same Wrangler cargo pants and dye them green. They've held up very well for the price. Gotta love Walmart. GOod deals on knives and guns too.
I hunt in walmart clothes each season. I also buy the swiss tech vests and jackets as a layering system. When the Russell thermals go on sale from 15 to 5 bucks in spring i buy them out it every layering system. They also pull double duty for under my waders for steelhead fishing! Love saving money for other things!
Thanks! Just did a cabelas video just like it showing what I would and wouldn't buy. Think I shot 54 video clips in that cabelas one. Just need to edit it and get it in the line up.
I totally agree with this especially for deer hunting. Mountain hunting is a totally different ball game though. You need the best as your life depends on it.
Who needs camo. Wear the colors of the field. Don't move unnecessarily. Don't stink. snipe? No, HUNT. Been workin' for thousands of years. Thank You TBAWF! Glad I found you. Scribin' now.
I initially bought camo for turkey hunting since they have pretty good vision, but I’ve found that camo is noticeably beneficial for whitetail. I do stalk and shoot though, so that could be why camo helps
All that is important is that you have found what works best for you. Just cause I dont wear camo doesnt mean i think everyone should stop using it. Glad you have a good system that works for you!
The reason all the scent control products at Walmart are cheaper is because it’s all over stocked from the past year so there’s a great chance it’s lost most of its potency. And as far as the scent killer laundry detergent I’ve been using all clear for the last few years.
No merino wool in Walmart and there’s a difference between Walmart waterproof clothing vs Sitka, first lite or kuiu! Nothing wrong with Walmart clothes as I wore those for long time but I started guiding hunters in the west and there’s a difference!
Difference in quality yes, but do you need that quality? That’s the individual question... my grandpa didn’t.... Fred bear didn’t.... still seemed like they had a great time, with game to show. If you wanna spend your cash, giver, what Sam is saying is it’s not mandatory, and I think that’s important to say. You have all these young impressionable men and women getting into hunting, we don’t need the marketing to work so well on them that they think there is a mandatory gear list needed to enjoy the outdoors!
For sure. If I were doing an elk hunt and going to spend 10 days in the same undies and clothes id buy good stuff as well and just figure it into the cost of the trip. But for whitetails when im coming back to the truck each night or to camp with fresh clothes walmart works great. Especially since most of my whitetail hunting is pickers, thorns, Briars, mud, swamp, etc that spread clothing.
@@TheHYENA87 well said. Too many tv shows etc make it sound like you can't kill a deer unless you are wearing 2 grand in clothing. Definitely not true, especially for deer, bear, etc.
Merino wool 65%+ is available in socks at wallie world as a seasonal thing. Got a weather resistant jacket for like 15 bucks and paid 2.50 per pair of socks. Just have to know your sporting goods guys. They let me know about 24 hours before something goes on sale. I even knew the day before they cut fun ammo down 50%. I don't even buy ammo.
The point about UV brighteners in laundry detergents is great! I was just recently talking to a gentleman at my LGS and he told me how he's seen deer stare at him, even in camo, if it was washed in a regular detergent, as if it's glowing. I never knew this before, but I've already been using that "Dead Downwind" stuff, so it's just great to pass on to others.
💯💯💯 man I've been wearing that Wally world Russel stuff for a long time now it's killer! The wrangler hiking and outdoor pants in there are awesome to.
Those pants are great! I bought a pair when I visited family in Missouri. We went to go play paintball outdoors, they were great! Not too hot, stretched where I needed them, and held up to me sliding on the ground and rubbing against stuff. You certainly changed my mind. Although I still will wear my camo, I didn’t buy it. Most of my camo is from Christmas gifts.
I found the video very useful I'm a 32 yr old deer hunter and about 6 or 7 years ago I changed up my philosophy from growing up which my dad taught me which was essentially a bunch of thick layers and you felt like the Michelin man in the woods so what I've found is I really like the base layers you grabbed at the end and I actually own one of the sweaters you showcased but with that nice base layer in Virginia I'm really not more than having one old school long john two piece set and a union suit from being ok most every day once my outer jacket is on with all that but what I liked about this video was you are certainly right a lot of that stuff in the Walmart normal clothes section is the right materials and a lot of it would make very nice 2nd layers for me over my base layer but under my pants in and jacket or sweater really enjoyed the video thanks bud
I also slowly stopped buying camo. If I can go face to face at 2’ with an old doe, wearing solid black pants and a blaze orange coat, I learned that camo is less important. Not moving, covering your face (your beak), and the luck of the wind matter way more. I do what I can to manage my scent (wash my ass) but don’t go nuts with sprays and clothes. However, I shop for comfort, warmth, and quiet. Poly and cotton blends are fine. Do stay away from blue and yellow colors as both of those colors are strong in a deers spectrum of light that they see the best. Lastly, Walmart shoppers are fun to watch.
I wear the exact pants at 8:20. Just a tip, I wear 34 waist in Lands End and other brands, but I have to buy these Wranglers in size 38 waist (I do need a belt after they’ve been out of the dryer for an hour but otherwise I can’t close them when they’re fresh clean). Just saying you might need to experiment with the sizing a little bit.
I tell my kids this kind of thing about most "designer clothes". Alot of it comes from a factory from over seas. All they do is slap a fancy logo on it.
@@louiss.w1944 the comparison me and traditional are trying to make is, that you are paying for names. The products can be 90% the same, yet the prices be way off. All because of who is selling it.
Same! I especially start picking them up around February. They go on super sale. A good tan or OD green insulated dickies jacket is like 16.00 in February! I’ve Thrown a green plaid shirt over top in xxl (my jacket is a large). One Year I got an insulated camp jacket for 10.00 from the ole’ mart!
This video was such a great video for me to have watched. I was just at one of those Cabela type stores, and I couldn’t believe the prices of the hunting clothing. I was just blown away and I thought I should get them at Walmart, and then your video confirmed my thoughts.
The stuff at Walmart may look warm but is not going to keep you warm after you get hit by the breeze. All of the expensive stuff is going to keep you warm and last a while. It’s worth the money
Best thermal pants I'll wear as a underlayer are the cheap fleece pajama pants that go on sale around Christmas time. I'll have to check the athletic pants out though cause the pajama pants can be quite bulky but are warm
What I read In Howard Hills Method of shooting the bow and arrow by Jerry Hill is that his father would hunt in buckskin pants as the outer layer if not soft pants in bottom and a plaid wool or cotton shirt depending on the season. He went for quiet over the hunting/adventure clothes out at the time and did the plaid as his camo since at the time there was no real camo until later in the 1960's with the tiger striped or similar camo colors being based off the old WWII camo some of the Nazi special forces had as first military camo.
The Camo I get is from Walmart and similar in the non hunting section since the hunting stuff Walmart has is not good in terms of thickness. I saw those tan jackets that are in hunting section at end of season sale for $15 and I have used one for work that same model though an older version being discontinued in 2016 for use at work in middle school lunch going in and out of a Freezer with only a bit of sign of wear in elbows but not wearing out yet. I do have a backup should that jacket fail or wear out but I have yet to need it. Stuff is almost as good as the true Wells and Lamont jackets being some Walls brand for a good bit less even when not on sale.
If your gonna sit in the freezing cold ... I have bought all kinds of cold gear Walmart, bass pro, cabelas all of it but under armor cold gear base 2.0 3.0 or 4.0 is beyond unreal wear them with a sweater and jeans and you do it get cold worth every penny ultra light weight. Unreal, $60 per pant and per shirt but will last years and works 100% .
What do you wear for outer layers? I also have merino base but I have a hard time finding real wool outer wear, at a reasonable price ($165 for a Filson shirt, $350 for a coat, is pretty steep).
@@wdtaut5650 i wear the stuff I just showed in the video as outer layers. Wool is expensive but tough as nails and last forever. Heck even 20 years ago good wool was 1000 bucks for a full set up from king of the mtn wools. Today the deals are much better. You should check out asbel wool as well.
I should tell my parents about the scent blocker to stock up on that at Walmart during hunting season to use with work gear at a Greenhouse the sweat to get rid of the sent on them.
Same here, pretty well everything other than boots came from 2nd hand stores... I like as much wool as I can find... Canadian hunting seasons can get very cold and wet and I like to stay as warm as possible and can do it better on the cheap than I can on the designer crap, was even able to find a few thick, old school, 100% wool, union suit underwear... now those were a find and a half for those real cold days
LOL!! Obviously an American Walmart!! Ours here in Canada are an absolute joke! Well, Our country has become a joke thanks to Justin Trudeau so I guess its to be expected!
When you get into cold climates and a lot of hiking you need good clothes that will be breathable but warm. Personally I have yet to see that at a Walmart. When going with camo most stuff in Walmart will fade easily and not hold up to there claims. I use kings camo mostly but wait for sales, and with good quality gear you won’t rip and tear it up as easily as portrayed, but if you do they usually have a great warranty, unlike Walmart. I am sure where I hunt this gentleman would be miserable in that gear. If you hunt turkey you know you do need camo, deer, elk, small game etc don’t care but turkeys do for sure, they have the best eyes so you need camo for those suckers. Most big camo companies are American made vs Chinese cheap manufacturing as well.
Glad yoy fpund stuff that works for you. I do live in a very cold climate (northern Michigan and often hunt in sub zero temps) thos insulation layers i show at Walmart are amazing in cold Temps. And I do jave stands that are over 2 miles into public land that i have to hike to. Everyone's body is different and has different requirements. For me, I love the walmart stuff!!!! Glad yoynfigured out what works best for you and gives you the most confidence.
@@thejoatmoo well said. And other than doing a 10 day backpack hunt i jave hunted everything in every climate in normal clothes. And don't forget some of the best sheep hunters in the world dont wear high end clothing even today. The key is to wear what works for you and know how it works. I do get tired of the " wear sitka or die" or the " if you wear cotton you will die" crap. A pair of zion pronta pants (available at Walmart online) will hold its own in the men's all day every day and cost 55 bucks.
Thrift store had a 300$ mint cabelas camo parka with inner jacket for 30$ also berne coveralls prolly washed 1x 20$ the best wool sweaters and layers for a few dollars.
My local Walmart doesn't carry half that stuff. The sportswear, yes. Not all the hunting apparel. Fishing gear, yes. I have to go to the more rural area of my town and find the outskirts Walmart, they have the guns, ammo and hunting apparel.
I’m a new hunter and I needed this video man!! Some of us didn’t have a father who hunted and with this video it’s like your pops telling you to stop being an idiot and spending so much money.
I agree with everything but the nylon: way too noisy for my liking, I have a pair in the back of the closet I don't even wear them for work because they make so much noise! Poly all the way.
FYI, don’t even need the Dead Down Wind. Use All Free and Clear laundry detergent. Works just as good. I swapped over three years ago with no issues and I’m hunting in high pressure areas.
I wash my Hunting Clothes in bakeing soda or white vinegar for scent control and I make my own scent killer with Isopopyl Alchol and pine needels. I have been doing this for over 10 yrs. and have never had a deer wind me since i started doing it.
I hunted from the ground with a bow when I was younger and never wore camo clothes. HOWEVER, WALMART and Cabela's sells junk and very little in orange anymore. Many years ago I spent $100(A lot at the time) for a Remington coat/pants orange suit at K-MART. It was well made and lasted about 20 years with sewing now and then. The first year I had it, I wondered why I tortured my self all those years with long johns, and all kinds of other under layer clothes. I got lucky and found a pair of orange Browning bibs in Cabela's bargain cave. The orange clothing out on the racks was junk. Double zippers(Steel) up almost to the waste and heavy well made material. I have been using them about 15 years now. I recently bought orange camo pants for back ups that I found at a specialty outdoor store on the net. Take my advice and spend the money if you do a lot of cold weather hunting.
Many people don’t know that both elk and deer are color blind to orange, blaze orange and red colors. However, I agree with you on Walmart! It’s cheap throw away after the hunt gear. Not much use for it unless that’s all there is in the area. My grandfather taught me you get what you pay for in this world. I’ve hunted for over 40 years, in some extreme conditions. Spend the monies if you want exceptionalities in certain items such as Gloves and under garments for cold weather. Cause when you ‘re out deep in the bush and the weather blows in on you, that’s when you appreciate it big time, and it just might keep you alive if lost and spending a night or two out there...
I disagree with the inclusion of Cabela’s as junk. Maybe in the bargain cave, and that’s why it’s there to begin with. I have shopped Cabela’s for 30 years, bought some great gear there. I have Cabela’s in all my hunting kits.. As far as the highjacked brand names like Browning, Smith-Wesson, Winchester, Field n Stream, Under Armour etc... That’s all cheap Chinese made garbage though..
Same. I buy regular clothes from Walmart too. Their Levi's Signature jeans fit me so well and are only like $23. I have Ozark trail hunting boots that are great for pheasant and small game hunting. Still waterproof after 4 years.
I’ve been preaching this all my short life, Sitka and those types of gear are nice... obviously it better be for the price. But it’s all about layering with the right materials. I can fill my closet with game winner for the price of a Sitka jacket. I see the same thing in the gun world (I build AR’s) and there’s so many people that swear by the $2k+ rifles, and I’ve built so many for the 400-600 range and they perform just as good as the “overpriced” rifles.
@@joebast1842 I have some great gun videos from earlier on. Stopped doing them a few years ago as yourube limits your reach and views for gun related content if you are not a designated gun channel
80% of my deer hunts are in below freezing weather so clothing my had to be taken a little more serious for me. But I where clothes I already have later it up, and have a really nice pair of insulated coveralls and a really nice big camp jacket. Solid 110$ for coveralls and jacket, but considering I’ve had the same boots for years, and got a nice pair of gloves on sale for 15$ it’s not horrible. And I where just jeans t shirt hoodies under it so I don’t have to buy anything for it, so it allows me to have nice outside layer boots and gloves, agree 100% on buying cheap clothes though, especially if you hunt in above 50 degree weather. Will never buy specific inside layers for only hunting
Yep no reason for expensive clothes. I hunt below freezing most of the time too. Today was 26 degrees this morning and I wore a pair of cheap thermals, a pair of walmart sweat pants, wrangler cargo pants. Stayed warm all morning.
I have to shop mens now for my sons sizes hes growing so fast as soon as I buy kids close he out grows it a few weeks later but thanks for showing walmart shop
Thanks for the video. Kind of tricky in a cold climate to find good clothes, but I'll check Walmart. The women's section might have crap for practical options but I guess it's fine to wear men's clothing for hunting. The deer don't care! I did order a $30 camo comforter from Walmart to wrap up in too.
Also check Dunhams and other sporting goods stores. Lots of thick fleece lined leggins, etc. Thats where my wife and daughter buy alot of thier cold weather outdoor stuff.
I've watched this video about three times now, and it blows my mind how much the price increases just because of a label. I've been looking at sitka's process of "layering" and wondering if I can totally achieve the same sort of setup with just walmart stuff. I mean it looks like I can, but I'm really curious to see the end result, especially for midwest seasons.
I have a mix of camos I've used for paintball and hunting. But as for quality, I have an old flannel jacket from Walmart that I have used a lot to hunt in and it has never disappointed. Although the one I got yesterday I was wearing full camo (overalls and jacket), I have seen plenty of deer wearing non camo clothes.
Well said. I have some sitka, some kuiu, and some firstlite stuff as well and wear it on hard-core special hunting trips that need it or I find benefits to using it. Bit 90% of the rest of the time.....walmart!

Put your gear under a black light to see if you are wearing uv enhanced dyes and fabrics. I ditched my tru-spec multicam when I noticed it glowed blue and my crye precision plate carrier did not.
This may work early season/mild weather but wind/rain/snow is going to cut right through most of this stuff and you’ll be miserable. Whatever you do don’t wear blue. Deer see blue about 20x more vividly than we do… or so the “experts” say.
love it when people tell me that. Yet I have hunted northern michigan winters for the last 30 years in normal clothing like this every year. and I own about 5 grand worth of sitka, firstlite, kuiu king of the mtn wool, filson wool, etc. yet i prefer to hunt in normal everyday clothes. and yes cotton and polyester! even in -17 below zero (the coldest day i ever did an all day sit).
@ can't argue that,,, one of the best stew pots that i ever owned was made in India, and one of the worst was also made in India,, maxpedition is really good stuff,, well made no matter were its made,, just gripes me that they pay some poor Vietnam person $ 1.00 to make it then charge me $ 40.00 for it,,,, but that's Y they R rich & I'm poor
I go into my local Walmart after hunting season, usually on Wednesdays. I got most of my hunting clothing, hats, gloves, etc. at massive discounts. People just aren’t hunting in Michigan like they used too. Same thing with fishing equipment us usually in February.
Yep I have about 20 pairs of un opened thermals that I bought at walmart for 70% off years ago. Winter is always great deals on all the hunting and clod weather gear.
I once bought $100+ (big brand) pants for Elk hunting and they worked as they should.... On my way back home I found very similar lightweight nylon stretchy camo pants that have been awesome for $7 & $11 on sale !!!!!! I bought all 4 pair.... Super for early season or later over some performance sweats for mid season... The cut of the clothes in Walmart are generalized as where The big names are cut for The athletic hunter.
Hey, TH-cam fed me your Channel and the First video was this one, I am a Very Frugal Guy, I buy my Wranglers at Walmart. I gave up on Levis when they kept costing more and more. I now buy New Blue Jeanes to wear to Town and when they get a bit faded &worn, they become my knock around and work pants, Some are dirt or oil-stained and the dirt is never going to wash out, these are my Dirty Work Pants. Then they become Rags. I then use some as fire starters. I have an old fiberglass Long Bow out in the Barn, I am going to dust it off and I will order some items from your Amazon link. I subscribed in the first 2 mins of your Walmart video. Looking forward to learning more about how you hunt. Enjoyed the Side Hustle Video also. * I have a question, what do you consider too long a shot with your Traditional Bow? Thank you. DT
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the vids. With any tradbow I try to keep shots at live game under 20 yards. Thst seems to be a common concensus some if really good will stretch to 25. My average is probably 10-12 yards.
@@SamkoTradBow 20 yards is fine, when I was shooting this old bow at targets, I was on target in that range. I was shooting and editing a footage of a really great Compound Bow Hunters hunts and his longer shots. I liked your use of the line, "get the job done", "Problem Solved" or something close to that. I am also entrepreneurial, part of my frustration with working for others was the longer and Zig Zag'ed Path many take to get the Job Done. I prefer a direct path to the goal. Best.
I have found that it helps to Not put the synthetic clothes in the dryer. Line dry only. (Hang them over the exercise bike, that's what it's for anyway, right?!)
My uncle hunted in his sweatpants and sweatshirt that he wore in layers. Only color he wouldn’t wear was any blue colors and he had no problems seeing and tagging deer or squirrels. Keeping it simple is always overlooked.
I think in rural towns where Walmart is the everything store they carry more stuff. When you are in a city Walmart is smaller and has less because you have Meijer, Kroger, etc.
The hunting clothing companies have built a massive industry by convincing hunters they need expensive clothing. This gentleman is on point I’m subscribing. Our grandfathers hunted in flannel shirts and regular clothing and did just fine.
I agree 100% Thanks for the great comment.

@@SnailHatan depending on the hunt you may need alot more. Backpack hunting in the winter would probably be the most expensive. And you don't want to cheap out when the temps get below 20 degrees.
Agree 100%. Glad you enjoyed the video
Great point and explanation
Not true I have their entire whitetail line. Stratus and fanatic. The best you can buy. And it will last me 10 years! Instead of buying flannels every year.

Great video. I am also a Walmart hunter. I think most hunting specific clothing is way over priced. I’m still using my old military gear I was issued. If you can find old military thermals or sleeping bags, they are good stuff
Yep all the thermals from 10-15 years ago were excellent. Now they cost 4 times as much and are 3 times as thin..lol
Glad you liked the videos.

I initially bought camo for turkey hunting since they have pretty good vision, but I’ve found that camo is noticeably beneficial for whitetail. I do stalk and shoot though, so that could be why camo helps

I only got camo for turkey hunting as well. Haven't used it for deer yet but I figure it can't hurt. Probably wouldn't get it just for deer though.
Ya he says all the time hes not talking about back country elk hunting clothing here.
You have all these young impressionable men and women getting into hunting, we don’t need the marketing to work so well
on them that they think there is a mandatory gear list needed to enjoy the outdoors!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Last year, I got fancy with my hunting clothes. I started using a Milwaukee M12 heated hoodie. I think I have some thick socks that are camo. Hahaha.
Hahaha on the walmart shoppers! Never a dull moment there!

Yep. Many of us still today do not wear camo as a simple plaid shirt is just as good and often better.

Canadian hunting seasons can get very cold and wet and I like to stay as warm as possible and can do it better on the cheap than I can on the designer crap, was even able to find a few thick, old school, 100% wool, union suit underwear... now those were a find and a half for those real cold days
Check eBay every now and then too.
Wow your Walmart is unreal. I live in central NJ and my Walmart doesn’t have 3/4 of this stuff unfortunately. Great video
I hear the rural walmart stores are the ones that have all the cool stuff. Sounds like the city walmart stores are smaller in size
Hi where is your Walmart my Walmart doesn’t have 1/2 the stuff yours has. It my be worth the trip to save a few dollars.
Mine is in houghton lake. The west branch one is also great if you are running up and down i-75 its right there at exit 212
LOL!! Obviously an American Walmart!! Ours here in Canada are an absolute joke! Well, Our country has become a joke thanks to Justin Trudeau so I guess its to be expected!
Michigan???
@@tomcatt998 yes that one is houghton lake
Good call, fortunately I kept all my military uniforms for hunting. However I truly concur with ur assessment Walmart is awesome thanks for ur show
Smart move keeping that stuff!
@@SamkoTradBow keep up the great work sir truly enjoy ur shows. Compound bow hunter gee i south Texas
Yeah you're not back country elk hunting in Walmart clothes and not being miserable lol
@@jonmacgyver743 I'm never back country elk hunting
@@thejoatmoo well said. And other than doing a 10 day backpack hunt i jave hunted everything in every climate in normal clothes. And don't forget some of the best sheep hunters in the world dont wear high end clothing even today. The key is to wear what works for you and know how it works. I do get tired of the " wear sitka or die" or the " if you wear cotton you will die" crap. A pair of zion pronta pants (available at Walmart online) will hold its own in the men's all day every day and cost 55 bucks.
@@thejoatmoo that was the best comment on this entire video! Wish I could of said it half that good. Thank you.
Thrift store had a 300$ mint cabelas camo parka with inner jacket for 30$ also berne coveralls prolly washed 1x 20$ the best wool sweaters and layers for a few dollars.
Love the thrift stores when the deals are there.
My local Walmart doesn't carry half that stuff. The sportswear, yes. Not all the hunting apparel. Fishing gear, yes. I have to go to the more rural area of my town and find the outskirts Walmart, they have the guns, ammo and hunting apparel.
Yepnthe rural ones have the good stuff
I’m a new hunter and I needed this video man!! Some of us didn’t have a father who hunted and with this video it’s like your pops telling you to stop being an idiot and spending so much money.
Glad you liked the video! Like you I also had nobody to teach me about hunting. I'm actually the only one in my whole extended family that hunts
I agree with everything but the nylon: way too noisy for my liking, I have a pair in the back of the closet I don't even wear them for work because they make so much noise! Poly all the way.
This video made me realize how much my Walmart sucks lol 😂 I need to venture out to the outer Walmart’s and stop going to the city ones.
yeah they definitely vary by location.
My Walmart is terrible too, no guns and the whole store is like the size of the men’s section in this video 😂
Yeah my Walmart is probably about 1/3 of the size of this one...
I love those pants! Wear them all the time. The stretch in them make them so comfy.
Agree 100%
That's why I'm glad I still got my multicam acu's from my time in the army.
FYI, don’t even need the Dead Down Wind. Use All Free and Clear laundry detergent. Works just as good. I swapped over three years ago with no issues and I’m hunting in high pressure areas.
great tip! Thank you.
I really like the Swiss tech stuff at Walmart, holds up to punishment 🏴
yep my swiss tech luggage has been super tuff and lasted for a long time.
I agree. I have some Swiss tech pants that have straight outlasted columbia clothes I have.
I wash my Hunting Clothes in bakeing soda or white vinegar for scent control and I make my own scent killer with Isopopyl Alchol and pine needels. I have been doing this for over 10 yrs. and have never had a deer wind me since i started doing it.
Sounds like you have that system perfected and working well for you! Love it.
Spend the monies if you want exceptionalities in certain items such as
Gloves and under garments for cold weather.
Perfect
I’ve been preaching this all my short life, Sitka and those types of gear are nice... obviously it better be for the price. But it’s all about layering with the right materials. I can fill my closet with game winner for the price of a Sitka jacket. I see the same thing in the gun world (I build AR’s) and there’s so many people that swear by the $2k+ rifles, and I’ve built so many for the 400-600 range and they perform just as good as the “overpriced” rifles.
Yep very well said!
Wanna share a parts list?
You should da a rifle build video! I’d watch that!
@@joebast1842 theres plenty on youtube, i dont post anything to my channel. Just a viewer .

Wrangler lants with the fleece lining in em..cant beat those
Yep love those!
Walmart should pay you! Or give you an advertisement deal!
Hahaha
Thanks for the video. Kind of tricky in a cold climate to find good clothes, but I'll check Walmart. The women's section might have crap for practical options but I guess it's fine to wear men's clothing for hunting. The deer don't care! I did order a $30 camo comforter from Walmart to wrap up in too.
Also check Dunhams and other sporting goods stores. Lots of thick fleece lined leggins, etc. Thats where my wife and daughter buy alot of thier cold weather outdoor stuff.
@@SamkoTradBow thanks! I'll check around.
I can hunt a whole season Temps ranging from 80 to minus 10 with stuff from Walmart!
@@SamkoTradBow Beautiful!
Ironically a lot of it is probably made in the exact same factories in China.
Yep buy what works best for you and your needs.
For my week long hunts in bad weather I stick with sitka for moderate day trips Walmart all day.
Yeah not a fan of uv rays either.
Quick question. How do you like that Kuiu Guide vest? I bought the Jacket hopefully it helps here in NY.
Love it. Best vest I have ever worn. Been wearing it on almost every hunt for last 4 years. Very wind and water resistant.
Yup,, pisses me off when i spend big $ on maxpedition gear then look at the tag and it says made in Vietnam,, same for Duluth Trading stuff..
My awesome boots that our special forces wear are made in Vietnam. Maybe they are the best you can buy.
Nobody needs chastisement for our mistakes unless we keep repeating the same thing.
I personally beat the brakes off the Wrangler pants and absolutely love them! Way more than my high end hunting pants
right there with ya!
Agree I run hounds on bear in va an use wrangler brush pants more than my Sitka gear. That’s only good for Idaho elk hunting haha
Yep don't need to spend a fortune to get basically the same thing
Best.
@A Rodriguez thanks! Have a great hunting season.
I have found that it helps to Not put the synthetic clothes in the dryer. Line dry only. (Hang them over the exercise bike, that's what it's for anyway, right?!)
Hahaha. Sound like great use of the bike as well as a great way to dry them.
People just like to buy the exspensive stuff to show it off when most the time they are alone in the woods.
Hahaha. Its all for the Facebook picture!
I buy quality wool because i don't want to die.Where i hunt cheap can kill you. It almost did when i was a kid so yeah quality can save your life.
@@SamkoTradBow true, that redhead gear from cabelas on the sale rack works just fine
My uncle hunted in his sweatpants and sweatshirt that he wore in layers. Only color he wouldn’t wear was any blue colors and he had no problems seeing and tagging deer or squirrels. Keeping it simple is always overlooked.
Agree 100%
My Walmart doesn’t have nearly the selection yours does... good information though!👌
I think in rural towns where Walmart is the everything store they carry more stuff. When you are in a city Walmart is smaller and has less because you have Meijer, Kroger, etc.
I shop a walmart about an hour away in a small town outside of a National Forest. I was suprised to how much more they had.
