This is a truly amazing song. Lyrics by Bob Daisley are beautifully sung by Ozzy, but the true brilliance is the composition and genius of Randy Rhoads. The background singers were the London Chamber Choir and strings by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Just brilliant! RIP Randy

There were 2 different guitars, recorded 3 times. Randy used steel and nylon stringed guitars that he recorded Left, Right, and Center. Also, Ozzy didn't write this. Bassist Bob Daisley wrote it about having a nervous breakdown. Ozzy hated it at first. He couldn't get the timing on the 7/8 right.

Hey Proud papa - thanks for the background info on this. The layering of guitars is a beautiful effect and I have to admire the and technical mastery and time it must have taken in 1981 to achieve that effect.

Randy, Daisley and Kerslake wrote the first two Ozzy albums. Diary was recorded in 81'. Randy was really big into multi tracking guitars, sometimes also detune some of the tracks against a track(s) in tune etc. Randy was pure musical genius.

Blizzard was already written by the time Lee joined except for No Bone Movies. Randy wrote most of the main riffs on both albums. Daisly wrote the lyrics and together with Randy completed the song structures. Over 40 years and people still mix everything up.

Ken, dude, thank you for this reaction! This song has been my favorite Ozzy tune since it came out. I was both excited for you, and jealous of you, watching you experience it for the first time. In all my years of listening to this song, I never considered the "marching toward something". As soon as you said that, it clicked in place for me that it was exactly that which was happening.
Your personality mixed with your musical knowledge, make your reactions so much fun and a learning experience. Thanks for doing these!

I love when someone with a music background hears Randy and Ozzy together. The planets were aligned and the gears of the universe were in sync when the first two albums were made. You picked up on the purposely disjointed time sig at the beginning. When you listen to this song with headphones you hear so much more going on. Randy as always plays as only he would and that solo came through a break in the sky from the heavens. I heard this and was mesmerized at 12 years old and was enamored with Randy's one of a kind playing. Fate dealt Randy a cruel hand but God damn he made a mark on guitar players, musicians, and metal lovers that has grown stronger with time.

Yeah, 80's metal had plenty of "I'm getting laid tonight" songs, but there were lots of songs in there with artistry and musicianship. Thanks for posting this!

Great reaction and song choice, Ken! I'm afraid I didn't appreciate Ozzy as much as he deserves back in my younger days. Crazy Train is a classic, of course, but was more the songwriting and the guitar for me. The song that made me look at Ozzy in a new light was "No More Tears." His performance on that recording is really essential to the song and is hauntingly beautiful. It'd be a great follow-up, Ken. Not to discredit ozzy but he diddnt have much to do with the 1st 2 solo albums.. It wasn't even supposed to be ozzy solo. It was the blizzard of ozz band until the albums were released and to the bands surprise they were suddenly just hired hands. And I won't mention her name because it's known who.. But Bob and Lee were fired forgot about and cut out of royalties for there contributions.. This was the genius of Randy's unmatchable composing skills, impeccably knowledgeable guitar playing and Bob Daisleys amazing lyric writing.. It was a struggle to get Oz to even do the vocals because he was messed up most of the time.. He was in a pretty bad spot in that phase of his life with substance abuse after sabbath This song in peticular he thought was stupid couldn't figure it out and diddnt want to do it. They had to sit down and work through the timing and help him figure it out. This is a masterpiece and a testiony of the genius of Randy Rhoads. This was just the start imagine what could have been..and he was only 23 years old when these albums were produced. Randys brother Kelle(Doug) said of Randy " once every hundred years or so a master comes along that had this kind of talent like Mozart and Bach and that was my Brother"..

Ozzy would sing a melody over the instrumentations and Bob would record it and write lyrics. This was done for the majority of the material. Also, without Ozzy's singing, these songs would not be what they were. So yes, Ozzy had a lot to do with the first two solo albums.
