EQUIPMENT and ROUTING:
What you see is what you hear. I kept the first take of everything, except the bass and lead guitar were take 2. Everything was being routed through my Fostex 450 mixer, and the onboard eq was being used in some cases. The Fostex then goes to an Otari MX-5050 Mk. III, then straight from the input (no tape) into an AVID MBOX Studio which is connected to my main interface, an RME Fireface UFX, via ADAT. Recorded and mixed in Avid Pro Tools Studio.
Voiceover mic is a lewitt MTP W950.
The acoustic is my signature D'Angelico (bit.ly/44eim4U) with a DI signal into a Warm Audio WA73-EQ, and a Sony F760 through a DIYRE mic booster.
The Bass is an Ernie Ball Joe Dart Jr. with LaBella flatwounds on it into a Warm Audio WA73-EQ.
The Body is a 1992 White Guy into a Bumblebee RM-5, through the DIYRE mic booster.
Maraca is also the Bumblebee
Electric guitar is a D'Angelico Deluxe Atlantic with flatwounds into a Golden Age Comp 2a with NOS RCA tubes, into a Supro Amulet running at 1 watt, mic'd with a Sony F760.
Shot on an iPhone 15 Pro in log, and a Canon EOS R6 with an RF 24mm L lens and a Schneider 1/4 diffuser. Video colored and edited by Kelly Oden.

where are the words?
Love the video! I always appreciate your detailed gear lists!
Cara você é demais ....parabéns
man.. OF COURSE i wanna more of this. great video.
That was fun. Now add a "verse" section or 2 in there w/o the slide track, send the file over to Carson and tell him, "dude, you have an hour, write some words and record a vocal track and send it back - I'll wait ...", and so would we.
We’re waiting Josh & Carson…
This sounds great
Josh... you need to do this!
Or send to Toni, she's amazing.
Do it!
damn that maraca got some motion
Besides being a great song, including the ride-along, the video presentation deserves an additional accolade. Great work, Josh!
josh is a super talented editor on top of the musical stuff
Josh, I'm 71 and have just started to experiment with recording music. I got very discouraged trying to record on my cassette recorder back in the day, but these new tools really open up some creative possibilities. Please post more sessions for us to enjoy. I could watch this process for hours. BTW, I absolutely love The Byegones. You and Allison create wonderful music together!
you were my third most listened to artist on youtube according to the wrapped clone YT are desperately attempting! heres to many years more! not of wrapped. of Josh Turner, specifically.
He was my 1st place artist by a big margin. Followed by Igorrr.
same he was my first i was like 0.7% of repeat listeners
I love the behind-the-scenes content - how about a full song walkthrough of your mixing process sometime? (fingers crossed)
Would love this too!
Me 3!!
Me 4
Me 5
me seeks
Thanks for posting this Josh. One of the greatest gifts you’ve given me is just the window into how you make music. How you do it with friends, how you play what you enjoy, and just how it comes out of you. It has changed my music in a very real way and I have absolutely done more specifically because I was inspired by what you are doing. Thanks for this one. I’m going to go do a little recording today.
Great concept! Wish we had more of the process to hear the song building up.
I have a been a fan of yours since I was 14..Im 20 now..and this is probably my favourite video of yours..I love jj Cale sooo much...we want more of this josh!!
This is fantastic. It's always a joy to get to see another artist's process. Also: your cabinet of sound gear is an amazing treasure trove.
This is so wildly impressive for so many reasons. You describe it as a challenge, but was it hard? It reminds me of those cooking shows where they only have half an hour but come up with dishes that seem like they would require a full day of brainstorming and a fully staffed kitchen. The only logical conclusion is wizardry. Really looking forward to seeing you and Allison in MN in the spring!
Been watching you for many years! You never disappoint!!! You’re a very talented young man!
Bravo Josh! 👏 👏👏
You should do more videos like this. Maybe give yourself one more hour and write some lyrics. I would like to see how creative you are in that aspect considering a short time frame. This was great!
Outstanding vid, Josh! Your creative juices seem to always flow at flood stages. Amazing talent you have and you make it look oh so easy. Us mortals can only wish for such things. Love that you are listening to JJ. He is my all time favorite roots artist. Even named a custom made Steve Foss guitar after him. Take good care and keep vids like this coming. All the best to you and Kelly in this holiday season. ~ Mark
Btw, would love to hear you do some more JJ. After Midnight, They Call Me the Breeze, and Sensitive Kind seem like they’d be right in your wheelhouse. Can hear those bass strings thumping already. Cheers. ~ Mark
Just wow! It takes me an hour just to fire everything up, get levels, tune up, find a pick, corral the critters, etc. The tune I'm just now finalizing lyrics for, I started in 2004. Suffice to say, you're a more than a smidgen faster than me. ;^) ;^) You're a real talent and inspiration, Josh! Best to you!
Awesome!

Some talent for one man! 👏
I started with the end of the video, with the recorded full song. After the song my first comment was: It remembers me to JJ Cale. Then I've just started the video from the beginning and just realized, its "a la Cale". You are amazing Josh, thanks!
Outstanding performance as usual Josh
