On n’te l’avait donc jamais appris ? Hmmm
    Chorus

He really is a genius. And for people that do not understand French, you are missing out a lot. How he plays with words, always have more than one layers in all his songs.

On point. I saw people reacting and translating the title to "Son of joy" without understanding that it doesn't work because the title is based on the expression "fille de joie" and in english "working girl" or "lady of the night" loses the play-on-words. The general meaning is for everyone but only french speakers can get the subtlety of it all...

Its a tribute to sexworkers. First he sings from the point of view of a client, then a pimp and last a police. In the chorus he sings from the point of view of a son of a sexworker.

Fils de joie literally means of sons of joy, however Stromae explains that in the song: sons of a sex worker or prostitute

    Hi Tracie
    Lovely review.
The lyrics are not easy to understand because it gives the perspective of four different characters. Even if you speak French it is not that obvious.
The choruses are the point of view of the son
    Verse 1 is a client
    Verse 2 is the Pimp
    Verse 3 is a policeman
    Look after yourself

Sua interpretação está errada. Ele fala sobre a prostituta morta. Primeiro é cliente, depois o cafetão e depois o policial. No refrão é o filho quem canta.

Great review and had a very similar response the first time I heard it. I feel that from ‘Alors on Dance’ which I think was his WORLWIDE biggest hit, he is going through a transformation. Alors on Dance is very accessible, and even you don’t understand French you will enjoy it immediately. The song still has a potent message to give, but it is not on the foreground.
After his album Cheese the masterpiece Racine Carree came in to the world. This album had songs that were both easily accessible without knowing French or the lyrics. It was a perfect blend of music, lyrical content and visual representation. Many people that don’t speak French at all or just a ‘petite peu’ could really enjoy the songs immediately without introduction and reading the lyrics. And again the message he try to bring was powerful.
This new album with these songs has for me gone to the next level. Songs are still accessible, however don’t have the same mainstream appeal (in my humble opinion) as the previous songs and albums. If this song was played to a person for the first time without the video and especially not knowing French, I feel they would not ‘love’ it right away. I have noticed myself being a BIG fan of Stromae that the new album takes time to get to know it.
Simply put I see it as follows. He started with (w)rapping his powerful message in a mainstream easily accessible wrapping. The following album was a little less mainstream but actually the perfect blend between accessibility (hard to find a better word) and the message in the lyrics. And now he has put the message before accessibility. You really need to ‘work’ to understand the message and reflect upon it. It has so many layers while the music is beautiful but much more supple.
To me he is one of the best artist and cultural critics I know. Every time I listen to a song, and especially from the last album, he has shifted my thinking about a subject. This is my opinion and how I received his art, I totally understand if many other will disagree. The fact I call his music less accessible now should not be seen as criticism! I can’t wait to finish listening to the entire album and what works of video art will come next!

Hallo Liebe, once again I'm completely under the spell of your beautiful reaction, I had so much hoped you would get to this video. Your perception of the world is at the same time highly artistic and deeply empathic... this video is one of the greatest works of art created recently imo. The song alone is a masterwork of lyricism, Stromae wrote it after he had watched a documentary about children whose mothers were prostitutes, he was deeply touched when he heard the story about one of the 'customers' of one of these women coming out of the sleeping room and saying to her little son who had been waiting in the living room "I just fucked your mother" before leaving...:(...
During the song Stromae takes the perspectives of different male persons interacting with that woman: her son, a client, a policeman etc...
Musically this is an absolute masterwork as well... and then the video on top... what a crazy production... reminded me of that hell march of the indian army, but this was much better, way much better, here the great choreograohy is a real treat for the eye and for a noble cause, how creative is this, the different 'troops' and their fantasy uniforms, the symbolism in their dance... I'm absolutely in awe of Stromae and his team, this is a timeless masterwork of art, more than music, more than lyrics... btw... suddenly Little Simz comes to my mind again, she has one video which is as great a piece of art and cinematography and dance and music as this one, not one of those I suggested before, but now in the light of Stromae (a light he is!) I would love to see you react on a another one which would so greatly complement this reaction:
Little Simz - Introvert (Official Video)
    th-cam.com/video/hxfGQ2AJHGk/w-d-xo.html
Like with Stromae we're here leaving the realms of ordinary music and enter a higher sphere that breathes pure artistic genius...:)
    Love you girl!
