How Much MONEY I Made from Building an App | Passive Income Side Hustle

  • In this video I look at how much money I made from building a mobile app in 2020, and whether or not this can be a substantial source of passive income for me.

    Several months ago when I first launched my TH-cam channel, I made several videos on the process of building and monetizing my first mobile app for Android. For this project I created a free app in the Google Play Store which I monetized using advertising from Google AdMob. I then basically left this app alone for 4 months to see how much income it would generate for me completely passively.
    In this video I look at both how much money this app made me, where that money came from, and who is using my app. I then calculate my CPM to determine how well I am getting paid for ads versus other developers.
    This was a long process to build the app to its current point, but there is still a huge amount of work I could do on the app. I am considering making some improvements to the app in the future (especially around how it is monetized), so let me know if you would be interested in watching!

    I developed basic functionalities for my app in Flutter and it took 3 days. Now the lectures have to be made for uploading in App.
    I want to sell my course, in the mean-while I wanted to monetize through Admobs.
    Now I learnt from you about monetization,so I will make sure my digital marketing campaigns are effective to make money.

    Thanks for sharing. I'm changing my mind to have an app in a Play store after I watched your video. It not worth doing if I need to pay $25 to publish an app plus I need to hire someone to develop an app for me and it's more likely that I wont' get anything back even after a year. Mind to share how is your app doing right now? Do you think it worth your time, effort and money to publish an app as an indie app developer?

    • @FinTek
      @FinTek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It could be worth it, but only if you have a clear strategy on how you will monetize it and push traffic to it. I personally don't think it's worth my time and effort at this point, since I'm not willing to be a full-time app developer

    • @sgsilvino2746
      @sgsilvino2746 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Money of the app must be a consequence (result) of the value that the app added to the user. There is no point creating an app with 100% objective to display as many ads as possible, but also to help the user with valuable and fun content. Study niches, age groups, regions, marketing so that the app is well accepted and adds value, user retention (ensure that the same user will return to using the app) and life time value (LTV).

    • @w0mblemania
      @w0mblemania 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Keep in mind that the $25 for Play or $100 on the App Store is a tiny fraction of the costs for creating a full-blown, commerical app, especially if you get someone else to design and/or make it for you. It's really just not a consideration.
      Even if you do everything yourself (which is really not a good idea) it's going to cost you in terms of opportunity cost. (i.e. in the time that you learn and build and release and market the app, you could have gotten a degree or another job.)
      Therefore, you need to look at it as a business proposition, and factor in all the costs, including ongoing costs like the marketing. (And you WILL need marketing: it's extremely unlikely your app will sell anything without it.)
      For a first time app from scratch, you should probably look at investing 2 to 3 years of your time.
      Unfortunately, there is zero guarantee that you will make a return on that investment.
      You could literally make no money.
      Which means your design, your business plan and your marketing plan have to be really well-thought out.
      Good luck.

    As both a user and programmer myself, a few words of caution:
    First of all, no one....and I mean NO ONE likes ads in their apps -- disruptive or otherwise. I get that it's the easiest and most convenient way to "monetize," but just know that you're already putting off a percentage of users on this alone. Ads have become the go-to because advertisers know apps are an easy way to get in front of people's eyes. Fair enough, but there's a reason browser add-ons like AdBlocker were developed, and there's a reason certain websites have had to implement gates demanding Ad Blocker be switched off in order to use their site. It's because BOTH parties know users hate ads.
    1:42 - No one likes having to pay for additional content. This trend of "DLC" needs to effing die. An app is nothing more than the digital equivalent of a 90s/00s video game or computer program; if I have to go through the hassle of downloading & installing the app, I should be getting the whole thing. Expecting users to fork out hundreds of dollars on top of being bombarded with ads for additional content is just down right scummy.
    1:48 - I know "create an account" is also the trend these days, but once again.....users *_hate having to do this._* For one, it's just another set of login credentials they have to keep track of. Secondly, it opens up possibilities of identity theft, because many users use one password across multiple accounts. But most of all, your reason for considering this option - to, "push out offers to their emails" - is *_exactly why people hate doing this!_* You think people WANT to be bombarded with your BS everyday in their inboxes?! When the hell did spamming the s*** out of people become acceptable Internet etiquette?! I would never, EVER ask or demand any personal information from my users.
    So you might be wondering then, "Well damn, Six.....how am I supposed to make money on this app?" The answer is simple. Sell your app for a few bucks per download, and market it as ad-free, commercial free, subscription free, no accounts, etc. Give people incentive to use your app. If it's useful, easy to use, and doesn't annoy the hell out of them with ads, subscriptions, BS offers, etc, they will gladly pay the 5 bucks to download it. The average app gets 1.64 million downloads. At 5 bucks a pop, that nets you $8.2 million. If that's not enough, the problem isn't your app. It's your insatiable greed.
    Also...far be it for me to question the integrity of a multi-billion dollar company like Google, but I'd rather not trust them to handle whether I get paid or not.
    Having run ad campaigns on Facebook, I can tell you that I'm almost positive these companies skew/doctor performance/results. If you run an ad on FB that pays by the "PM opened," you'll get dozens of "users" responding to your ad and opening a PM. When you reply back, they never say anything. I even messaged a user once from my personal account asking if they'd responded to the ad. Still no response. In these cases, FB gets paid whether you make a sale or not; as soon as the ad is clicked on (or the ad *_perceives_* it has been clicked on), FB will get paid. So I'm pretty sure FB sends bot accounts to "click" on your ad. These "bot accounts" are probably real accounts that FB hijacks to prop up the illusion that a legitimate user has clicked your ad. I doubt the real owners of these accounts are even aware this occurs, which is probably why they don't reply.
    Anywho, point is, I would never trust Google to handle my money. Pay me when you download it. Then all I have to do is tally money earned with # of downloads to find out if someone is ripping me off.

      This comment should get more likes but the sad fact about the internet is that useless things get 10x up to 1000x more hype than real, valuable advice or info.
      I'm a developer and recently started learning Flutter. You wrote exactly how I feel about apps and the various stupid ways people try to monetize their work.
      I'm a strong believer in value and high quality. If you build cool solutions and experiences for your users, a fraction of them will trust you enough to pay you and will buy more from you.
      Easy, short-sighted and gimmicky attempts at monetization will not bring lasting, sustainable income over time.

      This comment hits the nail on the head very hard.
      Almost every mobile "developer" i've met think an app is a vehicle to show ads and ranks value creation second to monetization.
      It really is very sad this is so common, and most users know this. Almost every app on Playstore is an ad with a little bit of functionality. If it even works, you bet it's almost broken because the developer want to milk you some money to "fix" it.
