    The auction wasn't the best place to buy my calves, only 1 out of the three we bought survived. We gave them medicated milk replacer 2 times a day. Gave them their shot of vitamin D, but they came down with the scours. That's when everything turned around. And I lost everything I put towards them.

      Your comment is a common one. Sale barns are tough for calves they pick up every bug there. The other thing is you don't know if the previous owner made sure they got colostrum. Without it in adequate quantities you can be sure of problems, Try to find a local farm that will sell them to you off the farm. Best of luck to you.

      A wise farmer told me.. a hungry calf is a live calf. Two times a day is fine. any more will cause problems.

      Josh Walman what did you do for them when they had scours? Lots of calves get scours including my bucket calf, I gave him a pill stuck it up his butt with a little too/ gadget. He was all better

    • @messyjc8653
      @messyjc8653 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Viers hey mate, great comment you make. I hear some deny the calf ANY colostrum, as they use that for cooking certain foods, and obviously don't get colostrum all the time.

    that a lot of cash for a dairy bull calf, I buy all I can get right from the farmer, the market is very poor for them as every one want grade A angus' beef, I pay any were from $0 to $100. no more then that, back in 2006 and 07 they were selling for $400 to $600 each, I would not buy any, I tried breading the heifers I got from them as the farmer don't want them if there born twins with a bull, do to they may not go into heat, but I get a hit an miss, witch is ok, they go into heat every 28 day and I will get a heat maybe 6 times a year witch when the price on them go high at least I can keep building, but the price have been at a great low for years now do to the market, many I get free

    Really dumb selling baby calves by the pound. Everybody has to keep guessing, "now how much would I be paying for that calf?" at the current bid.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How would you sell them?

    • @randyyoder4898
      @randyyoder4898 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sell them by the head like you would sell a piece of merchandise that way people know how much they are giving as the auctioneer is selling the animal. It's up to you how you want to sell em but that is certainly the way I would do it. Maybe everybody else is smarter than me and can figure it in their heads but that's the way I would sell baby calves at least by the head.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Yoder Then you’re not factoring in weight, which plays a big role in calf health and age of the animal

    • @randyyoder4898
      @randyyoder4898 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Factor that in with your eyes when you 're bidding on it and you at least know instantly what You 're paying for it. You can sell em how you want. That's up to you. Just giving my opinion.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Yoder That’s usually how person to person transactions go. We aim for calves around 100# anyway, so whatever the bid is usually what the cost of the calf is

I use Baytril too. You need to put them in another building or another farm, if you think that will prevent a disease spread, by just separate space stall.

      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mothers really don’t care like humans do. I know they try to humanize cattle on TH-cam videos, but they don’t care for their calves like humans.

    • @odd_random3938
      @odd_random3938 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you telling me that mother cows don't care about there babies!? Wtf!! They do time and time again you see mother's cows screaming for the babies when dairy farmers take them away. And the moo for days for there babies. So THEY DO CARE!!

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      karra naomi Certainly not like humans do. Of course they call for their calves. What they never tell you in any videos about cattle is that they simply act like their calf never existed after a short period of separation. Heck, I took a calf out of her pen yesterday and the mom called once then walked away.

    • @odd_random3938
      @odd_random3938 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong! I have seen what really happens. Seen the cruelty what goes on. So don't say mother cows don't care.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      karra naomi Of course they care. But not like humans do. It’s really funny the lack of context you see just about everywhere on it. People want farmers to leave the calves alone, but don’t care if that means the mother kills her calf every other year.

    • @scotthaddick
      @scotthaddick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      more like nudging them along, I don't think animal abusers would bother petting them after they get them to go where they need to go , as far as chaining them up for vaccination im guessing it's so the animal doesn't freak out and hurt itself.

    How Farms Work I am sorry for the loss of your Mother dying from Alzheimer's. But why is that so sad to lose your Mother? All of these animals never even see their Mothers! And it's a known fact that eating meat and dairy causes Alzheimer's/Dementia, cardiovascular disease, cancer. ....My mother and father were huge meat eaters. My father died of a abdominal aneurysm and a very weak heart and my mother died the same year in 2015 of Alzheimer's. However, when my parents started me on meats, I would chew and chew and run to the washroom to spit the meat out. I just had this profound knowledge of animal cruelty....There is so much clinical data to support my claims. Meat is full of chemicals, bad fats and a plant based diet is the most healthy! When you say you lost your Mother, please think of the countless animals that are stolen from their Mothers at birth every second of every day! There is NO Difference! A mother loves his/her own child more than herself! And by raping her, impregnating her, she is hurt and cries each time she is forced to produce an offspring......smh, smh in disgust!!!
