How to Bottle Feed a Calf That Has Not Learned to Suckle

- In the event that you cannot get your baby calf to bottle feed, Dan has a great tip for getting the calf to latch on and start bottle feeding. NOTE: Never force milk replacer down your calf's throat. If the calf is not taking the bottle even after these tricks you will need to tube feed.

Very helpful video, Although massaging his throat is only annoying the calf, and its important calves have access to fresh water, a bucket placed in the corner would do,
It helps if there's some touch contact with the (clean parts of the) calf's butt end. It mimics the momma cow licking his butt, which somehow wakes up the front end.

Anybody know how to get a young calf to suck? Can you slowly teach them with the Karo syrup? We sure do appreciate any tips or ideas thanks everyone!
Karo syrup was key I think for our calf. Thanks for idea. Had been tubing twice a day for 4 days. Wouldnt suck fingers let alone bottle. Let him go until noon before feeding. Started with finger in syrup then switched to bottle. Had to make nipple hole bigger but he finally took. Thank goodness. Much appreciate your help!

Darn we lost the momma at least she's not suffering anymore! the calf hasn't yet learned to suck my dad got the Karo syrup didn't work yet but the calf is super scared and now the whole heard wonders why she's in a pen balling for food & the mom!

Hey I got a hold of a calf that is around 4 days old has only had a fourth of a bottle in it it is drinking water out of a dish do you have any suggestions? Should I still go ahead and tube it with being that old?

could you use maple syrup instead of karo?
Just did it a couple of nights ago with maple, didn't have Karo. That and the bigger nipple opening worked like a charm.
we just got one from out friend poor baby calf losted he's mom after she had him😭 I have to make him drink milk it's a lot of work😔
