Never had brakes in any of the dozens of wheelchairs over the past 40 odd years But there are situations where they are needed for some people , Just not me ))

I can tell you how dangerous it is to have wheelchair brakes not hold. 5 years ago I was transferring from bed to wheelchair as I did every morning. This particular day in mid transfer the wheelchair went one way and I fell very hard on my knees. Breaking one femur bone in two and fracturing the other knee. I had to have immediate surgery to repair the complete brake and spent the next 5 weeks in the hospital. Very important to keep locks working properly.

Thank you so much for this! We’ve been struggling to get my brakes tight enough to stay in place without being so tight that they strain my wrists.

Thanks for the video. Why is it that breaks come out of "place" or its setting? I know that when I switched out the regular tires on my wheelchair to ones that are compact, meaning to inner tube, the brake on the right side no longer takes. Seeing as the tires are on the same rims as the old tires, it should work the same, right? Also, the brake on the left takes as it did before.
Is it as easy as the little notch underneath the nut got slightly adjusted during the switch of tires despite the entire rims being off the chair? Or can it loosen from things like shaking, seeing as I have a yard with tons of gravel and stuff, it's quite shaky getting around.
Thankful for any tips and now I know how to go about making both my brakes function well and equally.

I need to put a shorter brake extension on my Moms wheel chair but can not get them off. In my younger days im sure I could just pull them off but not anymore. What is the best way to remove them?
