Basically we used the IEW Canadian History Writing lessons as our spine. Then, I used Courage and Conquest's suggestions of what pages to read in the kid's encyclopedia I showed, as well as the Discover Canada series. The Discover Canada books were quite good but we only read the pages suggest in C&C. Then, I gathered a ton of historical novels and read those for each time period. That's not super clear but I hope it helped! Basically, we followed the progression of IEW and skipped around in C&C to match the writing projects.
I found the document I typed up with my plan! I think I'm sharing it correctly. Please let me know if this link works! docs.google.com/document/d/1qwonIT1zX54IZdgh_0YTPayJw6Ju5xBk/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=112087120385966131208&rtpof=true&sd=true
I love your reviews, love that you're Canadian. I am wondering where your grammar journey will take you after Fix it grammar ? I going to have a look for that IEW Canadian writing book. Thanks.
I actually want to do a whole video on grammar, as we have used different things, but I'm happy now with what we've pieced together over the years - so stay tuned! This past year my middle schooler used Easy Grammar Plus and we were happy with it. She did half this book this year, and will do the second half next year. It wasn't flashy or exciting, but we both liked that it had clear explanations, and she was able to do it completely independently. She used the teacher guide to check her own work, and that was great for us!
I love hearing that! We feel exactly the same way! I feel like we can tackle any writing project now with confidence because we have such a great foundation of how to approach things!
What would someone who has never used IEW before need to do before they would be ready for this Canadian one? Would an 8th Grader be able to start somewhere in the middle, or would they have needed to start way back in the early grades and it is to late to start now? I didn't know they had a Canadian book.
It is never too late to start with IEW! There is lots of repetition in the program, so you can jump in at any time. Where to start will depend honestly on how involved you want to be as the parent. If you want your child to do this fairly independently, then I would recommend starting with Structure and Style for Students, Year 1, Level B. If you as the parent are interested in being fairly involved and helping teach the concepts, you could start with the Canadian History writing lessons, which I think are FANTASTIC!! We really, really enjoyed this book. What I would recommend if you want to start with the Canadian lessons, is that you also purchase the Parent Instructional program: Teaching Writing with Structure and Style. The would equip you to teach the lessons to your child. The program looks scary, but really, all the time you need to commit to it would be about 1.5 hours per month to watch the video on the new unit they will be learning. Which option you go with depends on how involved you want to be, and how confident you feel about learning and then teaching the material! :)
I believe I purchased mine from Classical Education Books, however I just checked their site and don't see it available! In fact, I just went through all the regular places I order from in Canada and can't find it anywhere, which is very odd! I would contact IEW directly, and see if they can point you to a seller. Sorry I wasn't more helpful!
@@karlacanon2507 Thank you - and I did the same search, finding that it is odd all our Canadian go-to curriculum stores don't have it as well. Will reach out to IEW!
I would love to hear more about how you pulled together the study for history with courage & conquest!

@@sarahj6377 I'm glad they have it in stock! That is where I had gotten from years ago when they had a booth at the AHEA convention.
@@karlacanon2507 we have tried both easy grammar and fix it, I look forward to your video on it.
Thank you for your wonderful review🌸
We love IEW! We've been using it for two years and I really couldn't imagine using a different writing program.

Where were you able to purchase the Canadian History-Based Writing in Canada - I am unable to find a reseller that sells it. Thank you :)
