I've been through those tunnels many times. The older tunnel which opened in 1970 the locals call "El Tunel del Tiempo" (the weather tunnel). Simply because its often cloudy or raining on the east side and clear and sunny on the west. Not always the case though and on rare occasions its the west side which is cloudy. One point, I hope you observed the 50Kms speed limit near the Cumbricita Visitor Center? The speed camera there is said to be the most effective IN ALL OF SPAIN at capturing vehicles speeding past it. I know several people who have been 'done' and ending up paying heavy fines. One a few years ago being my Father-in-Law ;)

The roads are remarkably free of ash, the highway authorities must have been very vigilant in clearing them in the areas of repeated ash fall out.
