I'm pretty shocked by how good this transcription is. I never thought a transcription could ever live up to the beauty of the original, but this is just incredible.
If anyone thinks Ravel was just a good composer, needs to look at the score of Daphnis and Chloe. This is one of the most original and complex scores ever. It is delightful to hear it done on the piano (s). You get a look at the notes in a different way than to hear the instrumentation. You hear the notes and the way thematically it is developed by the composer. Currently I am playing the solo piano version of Daphnis and Chloe which is a smattering of the score, not as complete as the two piano version. It is too difficult for someone at my level to ever perform for people, but it gives me an insight into this gorgeous piece that everyone loves. When the complete Daphnis et Chloe is performed, the house is packed. People know and love the complete score. I had the pleasure of hearing a performance in the 40's with the San Francisco Symphony under the direction of its then conductor Pierre Monteux who might have conducted the first performance of this Ravel classic. (I am 84.)
And people think classical music is for old people. You where how old then? 10? And I guess you were more or less the only of that age in the audience while the rest was in their 60's. History repeats itself. ;)
@@Quotenwagnerianer My dad was a jazz musician in San Francisco and a proud member of the Musician's Union. He sent me to a piano teacher at 6 years old and I became a classical music lover instead of the jazz my father would have liked. There was a drawer in the Musician's Union in which complementary tickets to the San Francisco Symphony were put. My dad knew my love of classical music and would grab a handful of tickets when he went to the union for different meetings. At this time I was 10 years old and in those days traveling on the bus in SF was safe. I went to many San Francisco Symphony concerts in my youth, sometimes alone and sometimes with others (teachers, priests, friends). Can you believe it: the San Francisco Symphony's conductor was Pierre Monteux, a historic conductor who conducted the first performances of "The Rite of Spring", "Daphnis et Chloe, etc. What luck to attend many, many of these early concerts under his direction.
@@leoinsf That certainly gives you bragging rights in my book. All I know of Monteaux are his recordings. And as good as he was as a conductor, you know how it is with recorded music of that era. It really only started to come together in the stereo age in the mid 50's.
@@Quotenwagnerianer I am 84 and the bragging rights are of one older than dirt. Thank you for your kind remarks. Pierre Monteux introduced Le Sacre du Printemps of Stravinsky in that performance when people booed, etc. He conducted the first performance of Daphnis et Chloe. He was an historic conductor who was Europe's No. 1 conductor but wanted to "conquer" America and the San Francisco Symphony had an opening. He transformed the orchestra from a community orchestra to fantastic orchestra. He stayed in SF for about 10 years and then moved to the Boston Symphony which was a world class orchestra and he recorded many records (78's and early LP's). I consider myself lucky to have sat for many of his concerts until his last performance in the late 40's before he went to Boston. His farewell concert was Berlioz's Damnation of Faust. At the end, the audience practically got on their seats to cheer this San Francisco fixture for 15 minutes until the brass section of the orchestra played a farewell fanfare for Pierre. I was around 16 by then and I was gobsmacked. Not only was the Berlioz exciting, not only was the orchestra and chorus at their peak, but I had a personal investment in Pierre because I had attended so many of his concerts. It is an eternal memory.

Some parts sound even more magnificent in this version for two pianos. I wish it would be available to listen to not only on TH-cam. I wish you would have also made a transcript for one piano, so that it’s possible to play by myself. Amazing work
You are one of the few that has achieved true greatness in this life and you do it for people like me which is more amazing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 😭❤️
Excellent transcription for the piano. I really felt that Vyacheslav Gryaznov had captured the many colours from this complex orchestral piece of music. Each texture/layer was presented very clearly.
Hey just wanted to say that many, many years ago, your transcription of Lever du Jour had its own video. That was my intro to this sumptuous piece of music. Had been a longtime fan of Ravel's piano work before but you were the first to get me really interested in his orchestral output, so thank you so much for that :D

No, no. Please learn playing the violin, or ask a violinist to play it, or third place, look for a record among the best available. The tzigane and such wonderful works are so specially designed for the bowed string instrument, each other choice would prohibit us to hear the aimed sound of it.

Wonderful transcription, but I wish the recording wasn't so "in your face" - at times I thought maybe this was synthesized... But the final scene is absolutely brilliant!
