    it doesn't run backwards because of the spark timing, I'm not sure if there's many two strokes that really do run backwards anyways, because the timing is usually set forwards a little.

    • @shenaniganswhatsoever363
      @shenaniganswhatsoever363 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Depends on the cam lobe running the points. Old Harley davidson golf carts were made to run backwards, and they had a symmetrical lobe. Tricky to get them timed right both forward and reverse tho.

      The old detroit diesel 2 stroke truck engines would run back words. I saw a guy
      stall one about 100 ft ahead of me on a dirt haul job. He rolled backwards let the clutch out, It started up and smoke was pouring out of the air cleaner and he could not figure out why he only had 3 forward gears and 13 reverses LOL. Have one their awesome engines, made by Fuji Industrial they are also the same engine's used by Polaris the 244cc or sometimes called their 250s ccs. I have a Polaris connecting rod Hot rods Rod a cylinder off a 488cc Polaris and piston from a 244 as well as a head. The parts bolt right onto the Ezgo crankcases, only modification was longer studs for the cylinder to block. Using the stock Polaris 488 38mm slide carb and a expansion pipe and full exhaust off a 250 atv. I ended up putting it in a newer version Ezgo TXT with F-N-R rear end to do away with the running backwards felt it would have a stronger spark if it was only firing once so I removed the reverse bump off the reluctor ring on the flywheel. Otherwise she's probably every bit of 30hp from a Ezgo engine now, just wanted to share.

      That's a bunch of boloney...modern oils are far superior to the oils that were available when old 2 strokes called for such rich ratios like 32 or even 16:1. Up until the 80's there weren't even many dedicated "2 Stroke Oils", you'd just use plain SAE30 motor oil. 50 or 40:1 is perfectly fine in older stuff as long as you use a quality oil.

    For a two-stroke to operate in reverse you have to adjust the timing. Because the timing does not spark at top dead center it's right after top dead center. The knocking sound when you move the crank and flywheel is the bearings on the piston and the crankshaft are worn out. I wouldn't run it very much longer without getting the bearings replaced. All I'm making photo neutralized the reason the carburetor is on the crank housing is because when the Piston moves up it sucks air and fuel in, and when the Piston moves down it acts like a supercharger/compressor forcing the Reed valves to close, and it compresses until the Piston moves down below the intake port on the cylinder head. The compressed air and fuel forces the exhaust out with the fresh charge.

    Would definitely run a 20:1 or 30/32:1 mixture in that the way the crankcase is only premix lubricated. Heck I run 32:1 in all my two smokers except my old case reed dirt-bikes from the 70s, factory recommended mixture for my 70s 2smokers is 20:1 for longevity of the rod/crank, needle bearings & wristpin.
    P.s. ignition timing is way retarded running it in reverse (since it's advanced running forwards), you'd have to relocate the pickup or re-clock the magneto to compensate.

    I'm 63 years old and I remember those wheels. We didn't like them because the tires weren't available like the standard mini bike wheels.
    Yes 2 strokes will run in reverse. The Fairmont track inspection cars (think the old pump handle railroad cars like you see in the old western movies, only with a motor) have a 2 stroke motor on them that by moving the timing will run in reverse. I have a friend that has one and being the crank hole is on my side it's my job to spin it over. Whichever way the operator wants it to go. My friend says I'm the most reliable starter motor he's ever had.....LOL!
    I like the look of the bike. Jacobson made mowers mostly so that motor likely came from a reel type mower. If you can get that motor up on the RPM's is might be pretty strong.
    Cool build.
    Cheers
    Terry from South Carolina

    Reverse on snowmobiles when activated changes ignition timing to run the engine backwards! It's very common on 2 cycles that need a simple reverse feature.

  • @tmac1572
    @tmac1572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In theroy yes a 2stroke will run in reverse for example in some snowmobile engines to put it in reverse you hit a button which makes it run in reverse which in turn makes the snowmobile go in reverse but the magneto in some engines are directional and only work when the magnets pass by it in its intended operational direction.

    Now back in the day it was this motor or it's bigger brother that were the competition for the Macs on the racing carts back in the 50s and 60s. I know this because my grade school friend raced gocarts in the mid 60s.

  • @cruddycornstalks

    Love seeing you guys get into some vintage engines and bike builds! the engine is probably the same age as the bike. Jacobsen was originaly a mower company and had big crude two-stroke uprights up until they bought the pattern rights to the johnston utilimotor in the 20s. made by the same johnson that makes boat motors. that johnson utilimotor engine evolved into the engine you have after years of renditions. it would have been on probably a mower called a 4 acre since it has the big tank. not a go-kart motor or bike motor originally. they should make good power though if tuned right. the muffler is a stove pipe style muffler that would work best for power if the extra pipes are removed and more holes in the outer pipe there is a lot of restriction in them loosing power for quiet mowing. To save your old ignition coil id suggest not pulling the wire to kill an older motor as it can make the coil short internally. they also tend to have pinging noises do to how thin the cylinder is and most don't have needle-bearing wrist pins. the timing of the mag is timed earlier to help with better power. I've worked on all three engines from the early one, johnson, and the later ones. fun motors. if you have any questions or possible need any parts for one I do have some. i also have a lot of other odd engines on my channel if you want to look. love seeing the older builds keep it up!

    Back in the early 1970’s I owned several Yamaha 360 enduros. Many times when kick starting them hit would kick back (dangerous for legs ankles and feet) but it would start. More then a few times I would give it some gas and let the clutch out to be shocked it was running backwards. Another fun fact there were some Kawasaki 2 strokes that had the carb under a side cover Down in-line with the crank. The first time I saw one I thought it didn’t have a carb. Those were the days!! Lol

    The shot of the rotating assembly is considered as the primary compression chamber. There are transfer ports from the there (rotating assembly) to the secondary compression chamber (top of the piston).
    The exhaust should have fiberglass mesh.
    Certain snowmobile two strokes did run in reverse. The ignition timing and fueling was a bit different than this.

  • @ericgood9073

    Chances are, timing in one direction will be set slightly advanced; maybe 3 or 4 degrees. Running it backwards will definitely cause the spark to fire after TDC, 3 or 4 degrees. Some older two stroke diesels are set at TDC to run both CW and CCW. But your Jacobsen seems to be a lot newer, even being old, and probably won’t run both directions.

    There is a 2 stroke built by Villiers that runs in forward or reverse. I dont know the details but it was used in Pengor Penguin and Beaver amphibious atv`s. Reversing electric start determined which way the engine ran as this was the way these atv`s had reverse. Yup you shut off the engine, turned the key in the opposite direction of forward start and it reversed the current to the starter and cranked the engine backwards thus allowing a reverse "gear"..

    The three of you work together really well! Have you considered taking a rim and using your metal bender to make a steel hoop 'tire' for it? You could do one of your old experiment videos with leaving it plain vs knobs vs steel tread vs rubber tread vs bolts tacked on vs full Amish tractor steel blades, etc. Definitely would need to have front and rear suspension, as well as really good fenders though.
