  • P0706, Check shifter signal. This customer was referred to me, after having his car at a shop or two trying to straighten out this code. I go through the diagnostic procedure and found the problem, i do a quick follow up video after the car is fixed

Thk you this help me so 😇 The place i just starting working at took in a job 4 months ago and could not fix this problem. The builder pull the transmission 5 times throwing parts at it. MY lord ! After seeing this and following the step you lay out I found the C1 wire was grounded out I rerouted the wire and bang ! Fix ! Took some time to find about 4 hours but way better then 4 months lol 😂 You made me look like a transmission guru 😆 I quit that job a week later.

    Hi Gary,
Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and post this. I'm diagnosing an issue with my wife's 2011 Audi Q7 3.0 tdi, 170,000km. I have a basic "Bluedriver" Bluetooth code reader here that was first showing me the code. P0C2D - Electric/Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Pump Control Module Feedback Signal low.
We took a very rare trip for a week away together and 500km from home in the middle of nowhere we had the "Gearbox malfunction: you can continue to drive (Limited Functionality) pop up on the dash. Thankfully I had the basic code reader with us just in case and after some quick online searching figured its the pump that supplies pressure for when the car shuts on/off at stops to "save fuel". So switched that off on the dash at every start and then continued to rack up 1000km over a week whilst away with no loss of driveability..
First day after back home the car started fine but after warm, say 20 mins the trans started playing up. The indicators on the centre console alongside the shift lever that show the lighted P,R,N,D etc were not lighting up. The car was staying in one gear and would increase in revs etc and drop in revs with the throttle but wouldn't change gears. Pulling over, stopping and restarting, the shifter wouldn't move out of park. Stopped, restarted a few times and functionality came back and wife was able to drive home. Now I have the 2 extra codes along with the P0C2D.
P0706 - "Transmission Range Sensor "A" circuit Range Performance.
P0C2C - "Electric/Auxiliary Transmission Fluid Pump Control Module Feedback Signal Range/Performance.
My thoughts are get the car up off the ground safely to inspect all transmission outer wiring looms, check the Range Sensor loom plug for dirt corrosion. Other than that I'm thinking possibly a worn/faulty Range Sensor or a solenoid issue on the valve body if that is part of Circuit A??? I'm not sure what the specific Circuit "A" as mentioned in code P0706 is but will continue researching today trying to find some wiring diagrams online.
I'm also going through the process researching how to do a full service, full fluid change, filter, pan seal etc also as we all know no fluid is life long as Audi say.
I realise I need a decent scanner to run diagnostics and wondered if you can recommend one? The wife has the Q7, and two of my daughters have late model VW Golf and a VW Tiguan. (I have an 03 F250 and I need to get something with Forscan for that eventually but probably need a decent VAG scanner/reader at the moment as I don't expect one unit does all vehicles?)
I've rebuilt manual gearbox's and a few engines in the past. (TH-cam is my best friend there.) I buy/repair/sell skidsteers as a hobby sideline also so I have a bit of a clue. Just enough to make me "dangerous" as they say : )
I'd appreciate any advice with where to go next and what recommendation you might have for a decent diagnostic tool for the girls vehicles here.
Thanks for your time Gary, I really appreciate it.
    Cheers from Australia

Hey, Did you have any update on this repair? I've got a P0706 fault on my 2012 Q7 also. It's not selecting the correct gear, and not recognising Park/Reverse. Once it picks up the car drives fine. If you put the car in lift, you can get under to inspect. I've had the plug of the range sensor out and it all looks fine. Haven't tested it, but I've ordered a new range sensor, hopefully that solves it. TIA

      Hi Sam,
Our issue turned out to be in the loom plug that connects in the loom on the right hand side of the gearbox. It was full of rusty brown/green corroded water. Very obvious when I popped it apart checking them. I was surprised how the water had wicked into the male/female plug but had not drained back out. It just hung in there due to capillary action.
I ordered a couple of spare plugs from China for about $15.
The spare plugs arrived a few weeks back and I haven’t changed out yet. But after cleaning the problem plug out the car drove great again.
I’d check any of the loom plugs around the gearbox as in my research corroded plugs were a common thing. I just checked some pics I took and there’s three plugs very close to each on the lower right hand side. My issue was in the largest of the three plugs that is mounted a seperate steel mounting plate. I think the range sensor plug was further up and a little harder to get to. Definitely check, clean and lube all the plugs. I’d be happy to send you the pics if of use to you if you give me your email address.
I should mention the reason the water could get into the supposedly weather proof plug was that the o-ring seal was missing.
Also I’d recommend a fluid change. There are some good vids out there of people using a couple of buckets and gravity feeding/draining the system through the trans cooler hoses. The supposed life long trans fluid claims from Audi are obviously B.S.
      Hope it helps,
      Cheers, Nigel 👍🍻

      Hi Sam,
Further to my answer I gave you a few days ago. I’ve now got the wife’s car in the garage as started playing up again. Codes, warning on the dash etc. It’s the same plug, half full of water again. But on closer inspection the orange o’ring seal is in there. The water is coming in from the side that faces forward. Where the cables enter the plug. Unfortunately the under car trays don’t shield those plugs from water flung off the front wheel.
I was able to get to plugs without removing any of the under car shielding.
So now it’s change out the plug cable seals. Looking at the new Chinese plugs I’d say they came out of the same factory as originals.
      Hope it helps
      Cheers 🍻

      There’s more! 😁
Ok, I’ve got a big tip for you. I’ve just been to see my local Auto Electrician legend. I showed him my new plugs, explained that water seems to be getting in somewhere but after testing I couldn’t find the leak. Inner seal must be good as holding the water in there and if I tipped up the plug ends and filled with contact cleaner I couldn’t get it to leak out the cable end seals. He scratched his head and said just clean it out as you have, blow out with compressor a few times and then Denso Tape it. He’s a legend! Will save me heaps of work stripping the plugs and rebuilding the new plugs.
      Hope it helps 👍🍻

@@nigelw598 Thanks for the info, appreciate it! I’ve not had a chance to get back under to check the other plugs, but I’m not sure we have the same problem as mine is only p0706, nothing else. While I’m down there I will open them all up and spray clean them anyway to make sure. As I said before my range sensor one I opened up looked super clean, but that’s higher up.

Just dealt with this horror issue on 2006 Ram 1500 with v6 3.7l engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. Changed: battery (was bad), range sensor & TIPM... problem was intermittent. Mostly when engine is warm. Somebody before replaced PCM, shift cable and alternator... problem found in the harness going over the right side of engine to transmission and other sensors. Harness rubbing to engine and causing short to ground sometimes. Disconnected all sensors and pulled the harness up a bit and repaired it. Problem solved.

Hello friend Gary a question I want to ask you is if the TCC generates me torque or speed, since in my manual of transmissions it tells me that it generates the overdrive at cruising speeds thank you very much for your videos and I deposited from San Luis Potosí México.

    • @GaryFerraro
      @GaryFerraro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Greetings from New York. What the TCC does or Torque Converter Clutch is it locks the transmission to engine rotation, when this happens you will see a drop in engine rpm of about 200 to 300 rpm, this is not 4th gear, just lock-up, this helps cut down on the heat factor, with the converter slipping, this produces heat and heat is not good for a transmission, so when the converter locks the trans to engine rotation there is no slip and will keep the heat factor down.
