  • Across Australia, Indigenous people are disproportionately arrested and locked up - some as young as 10 years old.
In this special report, former inmates reveal what it is like to be imprisoned as a child.
As the Black Lives Matter Movement resonates across the globe and Indigenous Australians lead nationwide protests, families describe the heartbreak of losing a loved one to a life behind bars.
From outback communities to inside a youth jail, 101 East goes to the front lines of the criminal justice system in Western Australia, the state with the country’s highest rate of Indigenous incarceration.

Reality is, locking people up, harsh sentences, and thus general alienation from the rest of society perpetuates the problem. It’s evident that the issue extends beyond the individual and their rights. The system alienating them p and driving them to commit the crime is to blame. No one wakes up one day and decides to become a criminal.

Waiting for the usual claims of huge numbers of Aboriginal deaths in custody. Just not true, non-Aboriginal inmates die in custody at a higher rate, the vast majority of natural causes, substance abuse, violence and suicide. Almost nil occur due to interaction with jail staff. The majority of inmates serve less than 6 months in custody. reoffending rates are high. The system is not great, but the alternatives generally favour the offender, not society and victims. A high proportion of offences are committed by offenders on bail.

I live in a community where I see indigenous kids that I would estimate to be as young as 5yr walking the streets every night. To my mind a loving, nurturing culture that I hear about describing indigenous culture would not allow that to happen. These kids think that crime, drugs, alcohol are normal because their parents can't take responsibility for their care. If trauma is a problem then seek help, indigenous health care services are available in most towns. Perpetually being a victim due to past atrocities will only mean the cycle of problems will only continue.

Aboriginal children are not held to the same legal standards as the rest of the population, in fact they get off far easier. Due to the social outrage, no aboriginal kid is sent to jail unless they are serial repeat offenders. Not to mention no one in this country ends up in prison unless a crime has been committed. I have been robbed numerous times by aborignals and every time the police were able to find who did it but refused to investigate further because in their words "they are aboriginal, they will just get a slap on the wrist". Recent videos seem to be about stirring racial tensions. Like the one about Asians in US impacted by covid. It was calling for use of violence, which is completely unacceptable and would only cause Asians to lose their hard earned reputation in US. Nobody earns respect by violence. I hope you can start creating more respectable content. I am actually very curious what is happening in Asia atm.

I believe todays incarceration problem is related to our past, when our ancestors were being chained up beated, and our women being sexually abused, then put on the mission and being segregated from society so no Aboriginal people can't work and provide for there family. As a nation of indigenous Australian we carry the pain, the spiritual connection we all have to our land but can't enjoy our land its damaging to our soul, The government always wanted us to have nothing, second class people on our own country, Anoriginal people have a spiritual connection to our land and thats powerful and if your not aboriginal you will never feel it like we do.
