  • Traversing Latin America to the US has become a well-worn path for those seeking new lives.
But now would-be migrants are coming from further afield - China.
This year, thousands have already made the trip known as “zouxian” or “the route”.
Their goal: asylum in the US.
Migrants cite a host of reasons for leaving China, from economic uncertainty, to Beijing’s harsh COVID-19 policies, to human rights.
But they can fall prey to human traffickers, corrupt officials, even drug cartels.
Despite the dangers, more and more Chinese are risking it all for the American dream. 101 East investigates.

Thank you for watching this episode of 101 East, which is the first part of an investigation into the 'zouxian' phenomenon, where record numbers of Chinese nationals are taking a dangerous route through Latin America to seek asylum in the US. In the next episode, we explore what happens to Chinese asylum seekers once they reach America and investigate the shadowy industries profiting off them: th-cam.com/video/p1K1uUM_5yM/w-d-xo.html

I met some of these people in Thailand after COVID. There was a small group of Chinese who kept to themselves at our hostel. One day I overheard them in Chinese repeatedly talking about my country Mexico which got me to talk with them. They were quite happy to learn I could speak Chinese but more excited to learn I was from Mexico. They started asking me a bunch of questions about crossing the border into the US to which I bluntly told them I had no idea about and discouraged it. I asked where they got these crazy ideas from and they said that people were posting videos and tutorials of how to cross into the US online. The Chinese government hard handed approach to COVID was what made them leave. They wanted to go both for the freedom and economic benefits but they had a very naive and overly optimistic view of the US. They saw the high wages US workers were making but had no idea as to the incredibly high living costs associated with living there. I tried explaining that there was a housing shortage and that their expectations for life in the US would set them for disappointment but they either didn't believe me or brushed off my criticism. I also tried encouraging them to go to German or Australia instead (places which I feel would be better and easier for them to enter) but they seemed dead set on just going to the US. Unfortunately I don't know where they are now as Wechat is blindly and constantly blocking and deleting accounts in SE Asia without reason🙄.

However, if you ask them about their view on Taiwan independence, the majority will fiercely argue against it. They paid for their own flight to Central America and faced no obstacles or harassment from the Chinese authorities during their journey. But it still took 4 years between when we applied for a visa and when it was granted. If my family was being persecuted by the government (my parents are Christian as well), waiting for 4 years not knowing if you're going to be thrown in prison is very scary. I had coworkers over the years who crossed the border illegally, worked very hard to get their citizenship via various methods, and they are so appreciative to be here where the drug cartel isn't the law of the land. Even if these immigrants don't have a college degree or skill for labor jobs, they are willing to do whatever work possible (from personal experience working with immigrants). They are happy to sweep the floors in a factory or do housekeeping/landscaping jobs to earn a buck. I cannot go outside at night by myself because it is unsafe and 11 women daily are murdered in feminicides. Maybe in china you lose some freedoms, but you have others that you take for granted. The sort of religious suppression, freedom of speech, fears of safety to the people in China has made no more sense when so many foreigners who have chosen to live in China today suprise the world with their real experiences of how enjoyable, dynamic and safe, harmonious and affordable living the country can provide to its people. Even these foreigners living in China have had a real life comparison so precious for the "Chinese migrants", it can't help foolish and irrational people not to make the wrong decision which has put themselves and their families in a dead end of no return.

As long as you don't speak out in government settings or joke among friends, it's fine. The first guy to come to China came because he was a Christian.
He was a school teacher in China, meaning he had an income to adequately support his family in China. Yes, Anhui Province is not a wealthy province, but if he was a schoolteacher and had steady work and was good at his job, he should have been fine. I am a Christian who has lived in China for six years. I have never been persecuted against for being a Christian, the only stipulations are that I cannot talk about it at work, I cannot share anything with the children I teach or the parents of the children I teach or ask them about their religion, and I can't preach on the street/go door knocking/hand out flyers or free bibles or anything like that, and if I teach my students about Christmas or Easter or Dia De Los Muertos, I can only teach about the cultural parts and traditional customs and can't teach about the religious parts of the holiday. I am also allowed my own Bible, I am allowed to read it in public and at work as long as I do it quietly on my own or with a friend and I'm not approaching others and asking them to read with me or reading loud enough for others to hear. I can bring in Bibles into the country in my suitcase for my own use, but I can't bring them in to distribute. All fairly reasonable. Now, I'm a foreigner so it's a little different for me, and the government is probably treating me more leniently because of this. I also however have Chinese friends who are Christian. I've prayed with them and discussed Christianity in public (albeit quietly). I've read the Bible with them in public (albeit quietly). One of them was a student of mine and I used to meet up with him and talk about his faith. BibleGateway is also allowed here, you don't need a VPN to access it.

I will also say that there are churches here allowed by the government, however you need a license from the CCP to operate these churches, you need an inspection from a government inspector who observes your services and looks through your sermon plans and religious books and these churches don't get shut down, however you can't just teach what you want, the government gets to tell you what you are and aren't allowed to teach. There are also underground non licensed churches which don't have a license because they don't want to be told what they can and can't teach, I've been to a couple of these churches too, they're not bad people, they're just fed up with the system. A couple of my Chinese friends go to one of these churches, however one of them said it is risky. She said that if you go to one as an attendee, you will likely just get a small fine, but your pastor could be in trouble, she mentioned maybe a few months in prison, and the church of course would be shut down. She said that happened to her church a couple of times. I asked her if she'd ever seen anyone get a really long sentence or tortured etc, she said twenty years ago maybe, these days that only really happened in places like Xinjiang or Tibet, maybe Inner Mongolia. Those places she mentioned are nowhere near Anhui. So I would say that unless that first guy is also an ethnic minority like Uighur or Tatar or something, or unless he was part of a religious group that was on the CCP's watchlist like The Lord's Recovery or Falun Gong, or unless he was leading (not just attending) an underground church and had already been told repeatedly to stop, or unless he was going out onto the street and street preaching or trying to import bibles, then I don't think his life would be in danger just because he was a Christian.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25. If they manage to make $20 an hour as a fast food worker in California they would end up spending all of that due to high cost of living. After tax they're really only getting paid around 15$ per hour and that's about $2.2k per month.
