Samba has a celebratory vibe while bosso nova is like chill
interesting way of seeing it. Best GS
You might be surprised. Samba does, in general come from a celebratory history-it was born through the emancipation of slaves in Brazil in the late 1800s after all!
However, like much Brazilian music, there's a lot of samba with a strong melancholic undertone. For example, Malandro by Jorge Aragão, or Pra Vela Não Se Apagar from Samba de Vela
Bossa nova is so beautiful …. Makes me want to explore Brazilian culture and what led to such a beautiful music
Just be careful about where you go if you ever go to Brazil.
I heard one of the original creators of bossa nova: antonio carlos jobim was inspired by the beautiful nature around him in brazil and he wanted to capture that beauty in his music.
No kidding. Jobim, nara leao, and others i’ve yet to find have made some of the most beautiful music i’ve ever heard. Been deep diving lately for more like it.
sounds like samba is for waking up and bossa nova is for going to sleep
lol interesting look! best GS
I was very impressed when I heard Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes and Tom Jobim at the first time. It is so difficult, being on another continent, to immerse yourself in such an extensive culture! Your videos and such lessons are just salvation. Thanks Gabriel, you are great! And your works as a composer, and a guitar player are no less impressive! Wish you all the best)
P.S. Greetings from Russia!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you're following. Best GS
I could listen to you play samba all day
Thank You! 🙏🏼🎸
hearing your calm voice over a beautiful played guitar makes me want to retire right now on a beach front house
Samba and Bossa are the ying and the yang of one same sound
I learned there is a difference between traditional and American bossa nova
As far as I'm concerned there isn't "traditional x
American" bossa nova. It's just Bossa Nova, played right or played poorly. Thanks for watching the video! Best, GS
I don't know how to play a guitar yet but this tutorial is very relaxing and soulful. Had to research more about the rich history of it as well.
Your playing is great. I heard Nelson Faria have a slightly different definition of Bossa. Starting as a soft & jazzy & indoors version of the Brazilian grooves in the 1960's. In that sense Bossa is a container for samba, baião, forro, afoxé etc played in a soft manner. Nelson Faria uses the same "claves" for bossa and samba as you do in his lectures as I understand it.
This is the best explanation of the both the samba and bossa nova as well the difference. Very clear. Thank you!
thank you Lenny! best GS
Still loving this one. Thanks Gabe. Would dig to see you collaborating with @AndyTimmons on an album of Samba /Bossa / Blues-Jazz and Rock tunes and rhythm section to suit. I would love to support that in any crowd-fund effort. The music would be a total win for all.
You're excellent! I could listen to you all day. Great explanation-I get the difference now.
Great to hear! best GS
this is awesome. very nicely explained and edited.
Me gusta más la samba personalmente, se captura mejor ese saudade. Gran video, muchas gracias.
This really gave insight on them both, thank you !
Thanks a lot for this clear démonstration 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
This is beautiful!! Thank you so much for the insight.
yknow that dog that peacefully listens to that guy that plays guitar, that's me rn. I don't know enough about music to really understand it all, but I love listening to the demonstration
It the music speaks to you in any shape or form it’s a sign I’m doing my job right 🙏🏻
Great Gabriel....bellissimo video
Thank you great vid
Thankyou. This has helped me characterise a piece I'm working on (confusing because it has a repeating section of the melody which has a different rhythm every bar). It's definitely a samba :)
Keep up the great work GS, we appreciate it.
you're welcome! best GS
Great video, I've always wondered what the exact difference was and you explained it perfectly while also playing gorgeous music on the guitar the entire time =)
Thank you so much Eugene! I’m really glad you liked and found the video helpful. Best GS
Great video. I’m trying to learn bossa nova and I’m realizing I’ve been playing samba as I’ve jammed in my little “bossa nova” style
Excelente Gabriel!!! Forte abraço do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil!!!
Ôpa! Obrigado Jair. Morei no Rio por 10anos. Terra boa! Abração GS

Thank you for this video! Really informative and well explained. m(_ _)m
I'm impressed how effective is this simple "switch" on the whole feeling samba/bossa nova
Glad it was helpful! It's very subtle , for sure. best GS
thanks you! very intresting
Thank you!
Masterclass
So helpfull😊
non conosco l'inglese ma basta ascoltare se hai un buon orecchio.
Grazie!
Awesome
Vaya final!!!!!!
🙏🏼
Check out Tania Maria “Tania Maria Real Wild” 1985 I’m surprised that lots Brazilians didn’t know of her !! Just like lots of Brazilians don’t know whom wrote “Ordem e Progresso”
love samba.. it swings baby
Great content!
Question: When do you suggest getting a 7 string for guitarists who are interested in this style?
Interesting. I tend to think of a surdo pumping away under a samba, but not so much for a bossa nova.
the surdo is definitely not a big part of bossa nova since most of the times there's a drum set rather than a percussion ensemble. But the intention of placing the strong pull on beat 2 is still there, less intense but still there. Best, GS
@@GabrielSantiago That strong pull on the 2 makes sense.
@@N0B0DY_SP3C14L it makes all the difference 🙏🏼🎸
Bravooooo 😉❤️
Thank You! 🙏🏼🎸
Se puede disfrutar más??
Un comienzo de Corcovado precioso!!!
Gracias hermano!
I've got sent to check out what Bossa Nova is from a reaction video to a Korean singer Moonbyul's song Weird Day (featuring Punch), and the song had such a chill but yet cheery vibe, and I was curious to find out more about Bossa Nova.
Thank you for the intro! :)
Here's the song that got me here! Could you comment on whether or not it has a hint of Bossa Nova? :o
th-cam.com/video/-BODuHUPBL8/w-d-xo.html
p.s. here's the instrumental of Weird Day. :)
th-cam.com/video/TBI3py4RcdM/w-d-xo.html
i wouldn't call this song a Bossa Nova per se, it's more like a lounge-y kinda vibe but it definitely draws from the style - some hint in the rhythm and the harmony

👊🏻🎸
love bossa nova ahahhhh
thank you!
Alcione - Figa de Guiné is a song that im trying to figure out. It has the bossa nova groove but i cant figure out. Its there but its too diffuse. I hope you can make video of it. I have still for people who did covers of it but there are non. Thank you and god bless
GS
que afinacion usaste Gabriel

CRITICA: a bossa nova, chorinho, marchinhas de carnaval, pagode, samba enredo sao variantes do samba... somando todos... tudo é samba
can you find a music where the group switch samba / bossa nova during the music to play with the ambiguity ?
Super super super...1unber1!
Thank you so much 😀
Great video!! Do you know Danca da solidao? Would you say it’s a bossa or a samba?
thank you! yeah that one would be a samba. Best GS
You’re interesting to listen to.
Thank you!! 🙏🏼🎸
Hey, great video man ! Could you recommend me some good Samba albums ?
Thanks man! You can search for anything by Jorge Aragão, Zeca Pagodinho, Beth Carvalho, Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho. Those are real references on the style. Hope it helps. Best GS
last song you played? what is it
Una maravilla de placer!
We need to do a series of videos together where you teach me the subtleties, and we transcribe moments of CCM and Romero and explore why they work!
great suggestion!
is samba to bossa nova what blues is to jazz?
May I ask what guitar you have? Looking for a nice seven string.
Hi, this one is made by a Brazilian luthier, Carlos Novaes. Best, GS
@@GabrielSantiago thank you. It sounds excellent!
Billie Eilish brought me here. Love your playing man. Also danced Samba in ballroom style back in the day.
Can we conclude that all music using 7th harmony are in Jazz family?
Not necessarily. 7ths have been used way before jazz. Specially end of 19th century
Enjoying your video. Working on my bossa/samba keys styles. Educational thank you 🎵💕 other account - XoXo Nassim 💋 @nassimgrooves
Thank you!!

Tom Jobim already explained
And I just explained again.
And before I figure it out I'll need a few more explanations! Thanks!@@GabrielSantiago
hella jifferent
Bossa Nova is better
Sorry but I think it's in your mind. 🙂
They're clearly different.
Bossa is a whitewashed samba to export and don't offend white ears. Eugenic, samba de branco, samba de paulista.
Recorded volume too low.
Explanation no use to people who don't know what phrases, bars, etc mean. And that's a lot of us 😁
then you need to start understanding, phrases, bars, etc the foundation of music. Thanks for watching.
Samba has a celebratory vibe while bosso nova is like chill
Interest way to look at it. Thanks for watching! best GS
Not exactly. Cartola - I need to find myself, Nelson do Cavaquinho - Juizo Final, Batatinha - Direito de Sambar, are samba songs that sound sad. There are many like...
