Ren'Py is great. I didn't know shit about programming and python but after just watching some tutorials I've learned all the basic and it went really good for me. Not hard at all. I've got only one bug and it was easily fixed. I just need to learn a few more codes and i can literally create the game i want.
The whole program was kind of a PR disaster anyway. They lied about completion times and having things done, avoided answering the questions of people in their steam forums, and just left their Twitter to rot even after pushing back the release date several times. Not to mention, I commented on one of the "Sample Game" trailers on their official youtube channel pointing out the title and concept were just a copy of an American Dad joke ("Wheels and the Leg Girl Detective Agency" vs. American Dad's gag "Wheels and the Leg Man Detective Agency"), and they deleted my comment without reply. :P Whoever's in charge of their social media should take a refresher on dealing with the public.
It's true that this is bad for beginners. I got this because I was TIRED of programming, but quickly learned that I'd be doing at least a little bit of it. Fortunately, they fixed most of the bugs you mentioned in this video and redesigned the layout a bit. I found VN Maker to be way better than Tyrano Builder as far as the power and control it gives you.
Thanks for making this video. I feel the same way as you. At the beginning, I was super excited about this software, but the longer I fiddled around with it, encountering bug after bug after bug, I'm tempted to go back to Tyrano or even Ren'Py. The only saving grace is since this company also made RPG Maker, I'm hoping VNM will improve with time...now if only I can just stick with this damn program until then...
And after 3 years, it remains kind of unsupported. Only the community of users help. It would be no wonder they make a new VNMaker and call it VNMaker Plus or something along those lines with all the bugs corrected and with more features but behind another pay-wall, like they did with RPGMaker through the time.
I've only used Ren'Py for visual novels, but I don't see why I would ever use anything else. It's 100% free, the basic coding process is simple once you take the time to look at what's happening, and there is so much room for customization.
I've never tried VNM and I'm glad I didn't. For making VNs, I'm using Ren'Py and I had nothing but good experience with it. It's a great engine for beginners and also advanced users since it's using Python as it's main programming language.
I'm using this in 2021, and I've noticed that on forums certain things are made extra complicated and yet the developers don't consider that something that has top be fixed. They're always like "that's a problem with YOUR GAME" as if VN maker isn't supposed to be straight forward and easy to use. It's REALLY complicated to learn if you're a beginner. There's so many things that I feel like should be easier to access and customize without having to go into the code so much. I do appreciate the fact that it's so easy to see what you're doing with the preview constantly there though. All this being said, it forced me to learn a bit about coding despite the fact that I bought it so I wouldn't have to code :,) at least I gained knowledge I didn't wanna have to have.
@@AnimeSimp234 still feels a bit shit. i bought it this black friday, and while i've been having a blast making a visual novel, the program itself is flawed. I mean, it works, but live2d support is SUPER outdated, it still requires live2d cubism 2.0, and that is so old you can't even download it anymore, the oldest available version is 3.2. so i'm stuck using the default demo live2d characters that come with the program. They say an update for version 3.2 is coming shortly, but at this rate 3.2 will be depreciated before they even support it (live2d is in 4.1 or something right now). that said, i don't regret buying it. i already sunk like 40 hours in it. it's fun and easy to use if you just want to make something simple. which i did... initially.
Do you still want to make Visual Novel? If you do, I reccommend CloudNovel. It's totally free and no coding at all. However, please! Read the documentation or watch the tutorial before you decide to abandon it if it doesn't achieve what you want. Also, if you have a question you can ask them on their discord where a lot of users, mod, admin chatting together there. And oh, it's okay if you don't want to make one and just want to play visual novel. Since it's a browser, online engine, we publish our visual novel online too so we will appreciate it if you just go there and play some.
Thanks for your review...you've saved me 60 dollars and a lot of time. Like you I got Tyrano and gave up on it...think its time to go back! Thanks again! : )
If only I had watched this before buying it $60 dollars wasted down the drain. I could have bought something else with that. And the company doesn't even reply to you when you ask a question about the game. The only tutorials available don't even help(at least it doesn't help me.) I wish I had watched this before buying it I regret it soo much
Renp'y is free and VERY simple to use. RPG Makers are also pretty easy to make a visual novel on, but cost about the same as VN Maker. Late but I hoped this helped
It was definitely disappointing. It was slow, laggy, buggy and the project files are so huge! I always found myself puzzled over why some things that should work didn't work and that the things that shouldn't work, actually works. Heck, the time it took me to try find out why things didn't work, would've been better spent on learning Python which was certainly easier and more straightforward. The manual was also severe lacking, almost useless.
Nice video, I wanted to buy this software for one reason only compared to the rest like Renpy & tyrano is the characters creation, for most of us who can't draw this might be the way to go. Tell me does Tyranobuilder have more character assets than vnmaker?
It really is a piece of shit, I hope Steam accepts my refund request. I haven't been this furious and disappointed with a purchase on Steam since forever. Oh, and BY THE WAY!! It was not developed by the RPG Maker guys, but developed by a single guy in Germany. Outsourced, and into the trash...
haha, thank u! i want to, i even have a few ideas for future vids i could make but they arent 100% concrete. i'll keep workin on it tho, thank you again!

Overpriced tbh. I only bought RPG Maker when the discount was on, which was 11 dollars. Even with that, it doesn't have that much content. Most of their games have this issue. They should try to lower the price
Thanks for the info but what about Character building does this software come with characters or is there any or have you come across a software that has that?
MoonStar there's a big difference between "I'm too lazy to learn how to use this program" and "this program is complete shit compared to other alternatives which are either cheaper or FREE"
correct your right about that but not in this case. also if your referring to vnmaker as complete shit then i think that proves my point above. Yes its mostly simple drag and drop stop but you still need 1 to put in the work to make your game and 2 to have basic logic and basic knowledge of how to structure and make that game. Also every program will have its goods and bads renpy is more versatile and open source but that means its encryption is not so good and you game can be easily decrypted (yes you can make a better encryption but if you can do that then we wouldnt have this discussion right?)
The problem here is that the whole marketing strategy for VN Maker was that it was supposedly a program for anyone and their dog to use when it isn’t at all. RPG Maker, on the other hand, has definitively proven that you can make a simple, yet versatile software with a minimal learning curve. I dare say that RPG Maker is better at making visual novels than visual novel maker itself. This means that the “laziness” in this case was not with the user, but with the developers who never gave a crap about creating a program that’s actually intuitive or easy to learn at all. It is possible to make a decent program for regular people to use, but it’s people like you who expect users to jump through all these impossible hoops and say that it’s just “basic human logic” to cover their own hide. P.S. by you I don’t specifically you I have you is smert enough to realized that
i know what you meant dw. but i founds it to be pretty easy and intuitive to make some simple vns with some simple choices..... now if you want to go deep in it its there that you have to learn it but to me it seems easy enough to drag and drop some boxes based on how you want to appear and write something in the text boxes. if you cant be bothered to do even that thats that the laziness i was referring too.
I delete my previous comment. This program is rubish. So I apologize. To create something worthy people must learn to code even for a visual novel. And aim for unity or something more common. Otherwise don´t expect to create something serious. Well was good until I noticed how bad it is. Fortunately I didn´t waste money on it.
Ren'Py is great. I didn't know shit about programming and python but after just watching some tutorials I've learned all the basic and it went really good for me. Not hard at all. They won't! It's an outsourced project. No one in Japan had any hand in this: A single guy in Germany made this and Degica licensed it.
