I am a GH5 user and I always bring a pocket-sized grey card then just use the "select white balance" feature, point it at the grey card then done!

Just filmed a video yesterday, all fancy, in S-Log3, 4K 24, on A7III, 1/50. Sadly, as a long time photographer, left AWB on, since I shoot RAW, and photos are photos. The camera was set on a tripod, I (the subject) was sat next to the window. The clouds outside were changing (but not much) throughout the 20 minutes that I was recording. Then in post, tried to swap places of different parts of the video - and it was such a terrible mess, even though the video was shot in a relatively controlled environment. It was the most amazing feeling that I can still get things wrong - and this humbling feeling is exactly what we sometimes need as creatives.

I completely understand white balance and feel there are pros and cons on both sides of the manual/auto debate. Personally I still prefer (the majority of the time) to use auto. Filming weddings solo you’ve got so much to remember - 3 to 4 cameras to set up, 3 to 4 different microphones/audio sources to set up, frame rate, shutter speed, aperture, iso, as well as positioning and ensuring the record limits on certain cameras don’t run out, battery life etc etc. Auto white balance - for me - does a good enough job on most occasions that it means it’s one less thing to worry about - it would be far more difficult to fix a completely wrong white balance in post that you’ve forgotten to change, than an auto white balance that the camera has got a little bit off. There’s also the fact that the colours from different lenses will vary slightly, and your footage will still likely need a bit of tweaking in post regardless. Another time I favour auto white balance is on the gimbal, if you are getting a moving shot going from indoor to outdoor, auto takes care of that change and let’s you focus on a steady shot and good composition. Finally, a multi camera set up may have cameras, as you’ve pointed out in this video, that the lighting is different based on the angle the camera is facing (one could be majority window lit while another angle majority bulb lit). In this situation again I feel auto is a safer bet in what is usually a very time restricted moment in a wedding.
It’s certainly a interesting and debatable topic - similar in some ways to auto iso. Which again I feel has plenty positives to it, as well as a few negatives.

Its not that difficult dude. Our eyes are wired to see in 5600 kelvin, just set your white balance that way for all cameras and you are ready to go.

I Graduated there back in 2008 and back then celluloid film was still the standard. The instructors beat it into our head that video is inferior to film, and that film will always be the standard and that video will never be able to rival film. So when it came time to learn about video cameras, I didn't pay too much attention to the white balancing, grey cards, and color checkers. Last year I bought the A7S III which is my first "real" camera and I was so overwhelmed with all the stuff I had to learn. That being said, I still learned a lot of good stuff that can be applied to digital cinematography, and the school gave me a great perspective on the different roles on a "film set". Ever since Saw 2 came out, Darren Lynn Bousman has been that school's pride and joy, hopefully soon I can take that mantle.
