True story. Me and my wife were having a holiday in the highlands of Scotland. It was autumn in 1998. We were returning from a night out in Ullapool to a little cottage we had rented in architibule, a small village on the north west coast. It was dark and we were driving along the hilly coastal road. Then suddenly a white stag raced down a hillside and ran straight across the road. It was lit up by my car headlights. I stopped and a few moments later a whole herd of stags and deer thundered down the hill following the white stag. It was like they were in pursuit. It was one of the most magical and breath taking scenes I have ever witnessed. I will never forget it.
I first kissed the girl who is now my wife and mother to our four daughters in The White Hart pub on White Hart Lane in an area I didn't know well a week or so before Christmas half a lifetime ago. Some years later we moved into our first family home in a new development and our agent spoke of what had been on the site before the build and we realised in talking with him further that it was the very same place. For those of us with eyes to see the unnecessary State execution of the White Stag this week is surely an omen.

Shortly after my first son was born I put him in the baby carry backpack, I took him a hike in a forest in fife near Macduffs cross. We were deep in the woods and I came upon a large tree freshly blown over with its roots sticking up. as I rounded the roots I came face to face with a stag. Close enough to touch we just looked at each other and shared a moment. It calmly just turned and left a deeply profound moment in my life.
Spotted one as a boy in East Sussex many years ago, he lived to a good age from what I heard from locals. One of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life.
I'm talking about 15 yrs ago. I used to live, best way to describe it, in a static caravan in a field! There was many deer around, & warmer evenings, once my son was in bed, I would sit on the 'door step', & watch the doe's with their young grazing in the field, (in West Sussex). One evening they all stopped grazing to look up & back further away from me. A moment later a white stag came round the side of the low wall built around the caravan, positioned himself so he could look directly into my eyes, as I looked into his, for a couple of mins, calmly. I'm sure I was holding my breath the whole time! Then he turned back the way he had come, the doe's started grazing again, & I started bawling in awe! My late Grandfather was magical with all animals, but had a special place in his heart for deer! I took that as a sign that he was still with me! I occasionally saw the white stag over in the next field, laying & watching, in the same area 1 day the rainbows end finished! (No pot of gold though). The whole experience was magical! (Sorry for the novel length reply)..

I like how you brought up the role of the white stag as a messenger and guide in various legends, saints' stories, and the Narnia book. One thing that I was surprised wasn't mentioned was its role in the Harry Potter series, with the stag Patronus serving as a weapon against despair, a form of spiritual protection, and a connection to deceased loved ones. In the last book, it even leads Harry through the forest to find the Sword of Gryffindor and reunite with Ron. After learning about the symbolism behind white stags, I think this was definitely deliberate. I was also touched by your story about seeing a deer and its fawn while in search of a hazel tree. One winter night a few years ago, I walked all the way down a highway to contemplate suicide by a bridge. On my way back home, I was startled to run into a deer right outside of my apartment. Like you and your deer, we just stood there staring at each other, in the snow and the lamplight, for what seemed like a long time; then I cautiously made a wide berth around it and went back inside. Reading the comments about the police shooting the white stag. Not sure I heard about this, but what a shame. The actual reason for my comment, though, was the story of you finding the hazel tree. I'm sure it was a very spiritual, mystical moment. I was wondering if you ever got to make your walking stick/staff? I do hope so. Anyway, thank you for another great video. Such wonderful narration. Thank you for keepimg these stories alive.
Like I have said many times, I much appreciate your work in trying to preserve and resurrect our native legends and culture which I tend to see, as our true selves. Keep up the good work!
Wonderful video! I always was fascinated with tales about the white stag, I suspect that he is a messenger of the old gods or perhaps he is part of the fair folks.
Great video. That story at the end really makes me think about how these mythological tales and ideas can start growing from such things happening to average people
Many years ago in Princeton, New Jersey, there was a beautiful white deer that appeared in a field on the woods' edge of the Institute for Advanced Study. This was such an historic area of the State. I used to watch for him each time I drove home this way. Then he was gone. I heard from a person I worked with, that someone had shot him, even though many hunters say that one is not to kill or eat the meat of such a creature. It was a tragedy. I will never forget the magic of seeing him, nor the loss felt when he was so wantonly, hideously killed. 🙏🏻💔🙏🏻
The otherworldly white stag, I like the idea that he can lead you out of faeryland too. Must be a very important creature then. Really well narrated , and stunning artwork too.. so magical.
So saddened to hear the news today. Just came to this video after seeing your telegram post. A great video indeed, however. What is your opinion on this dark event? Do you think it signals a turning point in that those responsible will pay for their misdeeds? Or do you think this could be a negative sign indicating the overwhelming power and evil we are up against?
I think if you really look at the symbolism, it only signifies something dark. I urgently want to interpret it as something positive, but I can’t see how. I don’t want to over analyse but it seems too symbolic. I think it can only seem negative.
There are a lot of strange things happening at the moment. For me, the appearance of the white stag in Bootle and its senseless slaughter is like the appearance of Christ and how He was slaughtered by those He came to save, by His death on the cross. The tyranny the world is going through is being brought on us by dark spiritual forces, as St. Paul put it, our struggle is not just against flesh and blood but against these dark forces. So for me the appearance of the stag - which is such a rare event - represents Christ and spiritual goodness, and is a warning of our need to be vigilant to the significance of what lies behind the imposition of tyranny across the world. The most acute example of this right now is in Australia.

I saw one about 2 weeks ago in Knowle dear park in Sevenoaks. Stop me in my tracks as it stood out against the green. I watched for a moment and saw that it was not alone. Absolutely brilliant and fascinating and I am into all of this sort of thing Legends and such like which I think that they are probably mostly true definitely
6:48 this reminds me of the story behind the Jägermeister logo, which depicts a stag with a luminous cross hovering between its antlers. The theme is similar (in that both stories seem to mark a transition between or meeting of pagan and christian beliefs). According to wiki: "This image is a reference to the two Christian patron saints of hunters, Saint Hubertus and Saint Eustace, both of whom converted to Christianity after experiencing a vision in which they saw a Christian cross between the antlers of a stag."
Oh sorry, I paused and commented before continuing to see you mention it, lol -- and the version you give (of a hunter seeing the stag in a forest, not a "mere" vision) is more like I remembered it. Anyway Duke, cheers for the video.

there are no coincidences. Only causations. what happened, happened because something willed it. Some consciousness, some spiritual being
This story was very insightful. I knew a white stag had something to do with me. No wonder my mom and I saw white owl's many years ago and even before I was born.
Thank you so much dear.
j'adore cette histoire et ta façon pénétrante de la raconter, elle m'amène en 11m30 là où j'ai envie d'être et c'est ...là. Merci à toi pour ce partage, merci
Many of your videos remind me of stories I had forgotten since hearing them 40-50 years ago. So thank you.
Wonderful video!
I always was fascinated with tales about the white stag, I suspect that he is a messenger of the old gods or perhaps he is part of the fair folks.
Hello, my friend! Good to hear from you again! 😄
Cheers fella. It’s been far too long since an upload.
🙏🏻💔🙏🏻
Beautiful video, thank you for sharing
Wonderfully told tale , brother.
Long and good health to you and your family. ♥️from Texas
The otherworldly white stag, I like the idea that he can lead you out of faeryland too. Must be a very important creature then. Really well narrated , and stunning artwork too.. so magical.
Thank you very much!
One of my favorite European (Pagan) parts of the lore. Thank you for making this video.
My pleasure :-)
@@TheJollyReiver hey, are you interested at all in being a guest on a podcast called HeimdallR's Home? To discuss English folklore and culture?
So saddened to hear the news today. Just came to this video after seeing your telegram post. A great video indeed, however. What is your opinion on this dark event? Do you think it signals a turning point in that those responsible will pay for their misdeeds? Or do you think this could be a negative sign indicating the overwhelming power and evil we are up against?
I think if you really look at the symbolism, it only signifies something dark. I urgently want to interpret it as something positive, but I can’t see how. I don’t want to over analyse but it seems too symbolic. I think it can only seem negative.
@@hempmaiden I'm racking my brains too, he came to warn us, and they shot him 😭
Could it be that it came with a message (positive) but it was shot down therefore the message wiped out? 😒
Just look at the state of Britain, and where it's heading. You have your answer.
Beautiful story of the White Stag or Hart as they are also known I would love to see one that in itself would be magical.
A thoughtful and comprehensive video essay - a very difficult juggling act - well done and thank you so much.
Thanks for this mate. This one spoke to the heart. I hope you are well.
Thanks fella, glad to hear it!
Nice pfp!
That was beautiful 💕
Greetings, Duke ... so good to experience one of your presentations again. What a beautiful lift of the spirit this gives ... story, imagery ... many thanks.🌷
I have gathered a few cherished representations of the stag in my home over the years. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you for your kind comment! It’s good to hear from you again! Glad you enjoyed! Ooh what kind of things do you have?

I have a small glass stag, a silver stag that hangs on the wall, a rather large black and white print of a stag ... and this really cool silver tray with legs, and all around the edge of the tray are stag heads. :-)
Oh, my friend ... I meant to share this. I hope it brings a smile. This precious little child calling out to a white stag.

A golf club near me has a white stag as its emblem. There is one living in the forest near the golf course. I got a fleeting glimpse of it and there is photo of it in club bar. They do exist
Oddly enough, we have some white deers around where I live. A couple of white does.
I saw one about 2 weeks ago in Knowle dear park in Sevenoaks. Stop me in my tracks as it stood out against the green. I watched for a moment and saw that it was not alone. I thought I would like to get a picture but as I moved to ready my phone it ducked behind a bush. I remained still and watched its companion who remained. I felt like it was saying 'no you can't have my picture but if you want an image take one of my friend'. On that I decided to just enjoy the moment and left them be. It was a nice moment especially to know that that creature is around there.
Thankyou for sharing these stories as not to be lost to time. Your voice is calming and beautiful. Perfect for these stories. Thankyou again and please keep it up
Still one of my favourite early Reiver uploads x
That baby dear was so cute, thank you for sharing.
Beautiful video mate. Magic.
Thanks fella
🤍 such beautiful energy, what a lovely story about your encounter with a deer
:-)
A video after my own druidess heart. Your experience sounds incredible! It was lovely to see the fawn! I have been immersed in Arthurian and Grail lore all day and this was icing on the cake. I hope you see one some day too. We have them here in Arkansas. Rare, but several are spotted each year. The fact that she led you to the Coll tree too. So symbolic all around. That staff was a gift from beyond the veil I guarantee it.
I NEEDED this 🙌
Thank you hinny 🧡
My pleasure :-)
when we had that hot spell back in england summer 2022 7:00 in the morning a young deer appeared out the brush about 30 yards away from me i was going through a tough time with mental issues feeling very low and depressed just sitting there in a quiet laybuy in my car on a beautiful country lane right by the head of the river tent.. i got a nice happy feeling like someone was watching over me it’s the fist time iv seen a deer i live in stoke on trent amazing beautiful animal
Hey Duke, wonderful, beautiful video. I think this is my favourite yet! Thanks so much for sharing this, and for sharing your own lovely experience. You clearly enjoy a special connection with the deer/stag. Cheers, Kitty. (shared to my fb page)
I’m glad you enjoyed! It’s been so long since I made a video, being so busy with work, so I thought I’d have to return with a very good tale indeed. Thanks for sharing, I saw it on my FB feed this morning haha.

Blinding video mate someone said they saw a white stag on the day of my dads funeral from their car
Thank you for sharing :-)
Thanks for all your work hopefully see you at a pa event one day haha
If you want to see a white buck like this. Come up to Scotland & visit Dunkeld, lots of white fallow in the woods around Dunkeld.
Great stuff, really enjoy the video! Your story at the end really blew me away because something similar happened to me.
I was in the woods near my hometown last year and I was also looking for some small pieces of wood to practice whittling with. I found this small bare branch that was perfect and on my way back home I spotted a White stag running past with group. I’d never heard of white stags before so I was really amazed. So glad I found this video, I told others about seeing it and they didnt seem very interested.
What a wonderful place
Outstanding video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for this , the white stag in Liverpool was a sign for all , I was very upset by this, I live in Woolton about 12 miles from where this happened, WHY? They could have got a vet? The future of those who took the life of this beautiful Soul will end badly , blessings to all
Any thoughts on the white stag spotted in Liverpool a few days ago? So rare they killed it 🙄🤔
This is a sign from the goddess.. Be Seeing You In The Beauty To Come. Great channel, just subscribed. Thanks 👍🏻

Close to my home there is this white dove always showing around whenever I'm around. she has brown pigments with white, very beautiful and cute, it walks around the street looking at me.
I love your personal story at the end. Magical moments. Good storytelling with a great voice.
Me and my mate saw a white stag one night out near Arn in Dorset, we were up to no good mind you and I looked up briefly from what we were doing and it was just stood there about the length of three houses away between two trees, huge
Thank you ! :) Powerful 'stories' with a depth and morality :)
My pleasure :-)
I have only recently discovered this channel, and I'm becoming increasingly captivated. Originally, the historical subjects like the Reivers fascinated me, but the folklore videos are giving me an education I never had. Thank you, Mr. Reiver. Please go on making such intriguing, entertaining and educational content. For as long as you can find topics to teach us about.
Cheers mate, I plan to! And I’ll never run out of topics!
According to wiki:
"This image is a reference to the two Christian patron saints of hunters, Saint Hubertus and Saint Eustace, both of whom converted to Christianity after experiencing a vision in which they saw a Christian cross between the antlers of a stag."
Oh sorry, I paused and commented before continuing to see you mention it, lol -- and the version you give (of a hunter seeing the stag in a forest, not a "mere" vision) is more like I remembered it. Anyway Duke, cheers for the video.
This is true yeah. I doubt many people will know the lore behind this as they down their shots tho haha.
Beautiful and true, thank you
Thank you so much for your beautiful and informative vid

It's great to have you back. I hope you'll do a Halloween theme video next time, or something similar.

I am so shocked no one's talked about how this legend probably helped inspire Harry, James' and Snape's Patronus in Harry Potter.
I thought the same thing! It's really fascinating to learn how many old myths and legends were incorporated into the HP lore.
Sensational mate well done
