    • @Buster_Piles
      @Buster_Piles 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I was little in Newcastle the Lambton Worm story was told to us all. I'm also interested in where these stories come from, whether they're all the same story and whether they're dying out.
      Are they symbolic stories about the replacement of previous cultures by Christianity or something else? Crocodiles escaped from medieval menageries? The statue of George slaying the dragon in Newcastle city centre: is that the original story and perhaps these other stories local versions of it?
      I commented here as its an interest of mine, hoping to hear from anyone with an opinion.

    I recall reading this story, and it said that the worm’s saliva or skin was poisonous and kissing it three times caused Childe Wynd (I hope I remembered the correct spelling) to fall very ill so he had to be nursed back to health before he and his sister could go confront the witch stepmother. I don’t know if that’s correct, though….maybe there are different versions of the story? Or maybe I mixed this folk tale with a similar one from another region…😅

    Great video! I was enthralled from the beginning and stopped what I was doing to watch the whole thing.
    Anyway, for those not aware, this is the same castle (although not the same building) originally known as Bebbanburg and depicted in _The Last Kingdom_ . The show was also filmed there, even though the current Castle is anachronistic for the time period.
    Sir Thomas Malory also identifies it as _Joyous Gard_ , the castle of Lancelot. I personally think that the 'Tower of Joy' that appears in _A Song Of Ice And Fire_ is a reference to this.
    It's also been used in numerous films. _A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court_ , _Becket_ , two different versions of _Macbeth_ , _Mary, Queen of Scots_ , _Ivanhoe_ , _Robin of Sherwood_ , _Elizabeth_ , _The Last Kingdom_ , and mist recently, _Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny_ .
    The first time I saw this Castle in a documentary, I knew that I had seen it somewhere although I couldn't recall where. Turns out, I've seen it all over the place. 😮

    Fantastic reading as usual!
    On note of the Wynding, given the context of the location its probably in a reference to the story but as you said a "wynd" is a type of street with the term being very common across a lot of Northumberland land. Usually its used alongside another term to describe what the street was for so Garden Wynd is likely a street with lots of gardens or something to that effect.

      I agree Amber. Stories brought with us from the Pontic steppe when the Yamnaya/Kurgan people started their westward migration that ended up as western European people. The similarities in Nordic & Hindu gods and the oldest stories are as good an indicator of our roots as the recent DNA evidence.
