- The Laidly Worm of Spindlestone Heugh, also known as the Laidly Worm of Bamburgh, is an old Northumbrian legend that dates back centuries. Closely associated with Bamburgh Castle and the Spindlestone crags, this story is about an unnamed king of Northumbria that marries again after the death of his wife. His new bride, who turns out to be an evil witch, grows jealous of the king's daughter. She curses her and dooms her to become a terrible serpent creature. Only the return of her brother can put an end to the curse, but he is presumed dead...

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain and Ireland. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place. - บันเทิง
A fascinating tale, expertly told, with a splendid tash.. Nice one my friend.
Cheers fella, appreciate you sharing!
“Down in the deep where the dragons used to sleep”
Good story sir
Well done!
I have never been to Britain, but the countryside always looks serene, beautiful and mysterious. One day maybe ...😅 and good Video 👍

@@balthiersgirl2658 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I recall reading this story, and it said that the worm’s saliva or skin was poisonous and kissing it three times caused Childe Wynd (I hope I remembered the correct spelling) to fall very ill so he had to be nursed back to health before he and his sister could go confront the witch stepmother. I don’t know if that’s correct, though….maybe there are different versions of the story? Or maybe I mixed this folk tale with a similar one from another region…😅
Believe this to be your best video yet.. the story.. the setting.. the magnificent scenery.. had me mesmerized from the start..
Would love to see more of these tales told in such an excellent and ethereal manner..
One of my favorite stories this.. was told to me by my sweet Mum long ago..
Btw.. have mentioned this before.. but worthy of mentioning again it is.. this tale .... and others you have done.. are enhanced by your beautiful voice..
Once again.. thank you, sir, for an extraordinary video.. 🌹
Jen999💜💙
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed! And you’re too kind! :-)
@@TheJollyReiver You are so welcome .. and so deserving as well :)
I love the mention of the people in the caravan park just see it as a bog but 'we' know how much more important it is
Yes aha
Brilliant video. I remember being taught in my junior school about the Lambton worm. I wonder why we had so many worm/serpent stories.
Yes I’ll have to cover the Lambton Work soon!
I was going to say, this reminds me a lot of the story of the Lambton Worm, which I discovered by watching Lair of the White Worm.
Another great tale, told brilliantly. The 'tash is looking good, mate, and so is the video, especially the drone footage. Three kisses? So much folklore has that magical number. Thanks for an entertaining telling, and, as always, look forward to your next adventure!
Cheers mate, appreciate the feedback!!
Sleeping Beauty was lucky not to be turned into the Laidly Worm.
thank you for a another great tale
My pleasure!
My neck of the woods.. thank you for sharing our local folklore story, and keeping the history of storytelling alive ✨
Men like you are why I keep my faith in humanity! Long live the antiquarians!!!

Wonderfully done! Would love some more content on the border reviers... 👍
I'm a Johnston after all. ❤

Putting together a huge video on the Reivers atm
I have visited Bamburgh as a child. Thank you for this wonderful retelling of The Laidly Worm. The work you have done to give background to the story is truly appreciated. Nice one Riever! ⭐👍
Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed!
This brought back memories of your old videos using drawings and paintings! I've had a framed picture of the Bertram painting hung on my wall for years to remind my of the Northumbrian coast and heritage.
Britain is my dream country. Beautiful and rich in history and legends hopefully someday I'll be able to visit
❤❤ hey Duke of Avalon Jolly Reiver brilliant job as we've come to expect as standard 🎉🎉🎉 Still rocking Captain E Blackadder 'mouse stash' your very handsome and sound even more captivating lol gut seriously bloody well done lad xx
Well done mate. This is a new legend and tale I've not heard of until now. Also...
4:17. JR is in the zone!!!
Cheers mate!
I'm loving the look with the Barbour, Wool Cap and Green Hunters. A double barrel purdy and a black lab would complete the look, or a border collie. Great video as always.
Great stories, great telling, great, filming, smashing classic men’s style too!
Good to see you back your truly in a league of your own hopefully more border reiver and ghost stories to come. Absolutely fantastic channel
Thanks mate, aye lots more videos to come!
Fantastic video. I don’t know what it is but Northumberland just keeps you hooked, the scenery and atmosphere, maybe it’s just my bias!
I love that there is a happy ending. What a beautiful place.
Beautifully told.
A fascinating legend. My parents loved visiting Bamburgh. It's a place I've yet to make on my travels up the east coast. Thank you. 🤗💗🙏
Poor Margaret, transformed to a dragon. Snow white is very similar to this story.
Some shared roots I think, with the wicked Stepmother and all😮
Fantastic as always, my friend. Your passion is always very refreshing and uplifting.
I love how added an adventure feel to this one. Everyone knows there's magic on our doorstep, but sadly, not everyone knows the magic you experience when we find these places.
If you don’t look for what the past has left you, you will not find it!
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed!
Great video! I was enthralled from the beginning and stopped what I was doing to watch the whole thing.
Anyway, for those not aware, this is the same castle (although not the same building) originally known as Bebbanburg and depicted in _The Last Kingdom_ . The show was also filmed there, even though the current Castle is anachronistic for the time period.
Sir Thomas Malory also identifies it as _Joyous Gard_ , the castle of Lancelot. I personally think that the 'Tower of Joy' that appears in _A Song Of Ice And Fire_ is a reference to this.
It's also been used in numerous films. _A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court_ , _Becket_ , two different versions of _Macbeth_ , _Mary, Queen of Scots_ , _Ivanhoe_ , _Robin of Sherwood_ , _Elizabeth_ , _The Last Kingdom_ , and mist recently, _Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny_ .
The first time I saw this Castle in a documentary, I knew that I had seen it somewhere although I couldn't recall where. Turns out, I've seen it all over the place. 😮
What a brilliant tale with a happy ending. I'm pleased karma got the wicked queen in the end. Thank you for bringing us your videos & for all your hard work & research 🙏
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed!
Wow! What a story! Never heard this one before. Interesting twist on the usually Princess rescue story. This time it was the brother who rescued her. Or did she rescue herself 😅
Very enjoyable🎉
Fantastic Video, well worth the wait. Unfortunatley i myself have not had a chance to get to Bamburgh and likly wont for anytime soon. This video will tide me over, the drone shots are fantastic also well done. Thank you again.
I look forward to these videos, your knowledge and exploration of UK folklore is amazing
Recently moved to alnwick, your videos have really shown me a new side to the area! you should do more videos about the history/folklore of Alnwick/bamburgh!!

Glad you enjoyed!
Honestly, you have found something you are amazing at, thank you sir for the good work!
Thank you!
One of my favourites of your stories!
What a story x so well told thanks x
Another amazing video! I love that you visit these places and show us the locations involved in the legends. I’ve been wanting to move to northern England for years now (I’m stuck in Pennsylvania in the U.S.). I love the fact that so many towns, villages, etc have such a rich history. The lore and legends for each of these places is so fascinating it makes me want to research every town’s history lol.
Thankyou..
Hare Krishna.
Damm good yarn loved it 👍👍
Cheers mate
I like these folk storys ..and your accent..i am from Birmingham.
Thank you :-)
Absolutely superb.
Great video! I loved seeing the corresponding places to the legend. I would love to hear about more legends that left their mark on the names of places around it, either way keep up the great work ^_^
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
I wonder if there's an abstract meaning of her being turned into a worm? Either way a horrid fate. Another great vid.😊 Thanks Jolly!
I have no doubt that all folklore stems from some ancient truth.
Fantastic! Loved it!!
Glad to hear it!
I think this video is one of your best yet, what an amazing legend!! Your footage is brilliant as always too. Keep up the great work, I'm really excited to see what you do next :D
Cheers fella!

What's the significance of the stag behind you 8 minutes in?
You don’t mind me asking mate where did you get that jumper from?
What happened to your video on Ahasverus; The Wandering Jew?
I think we both know what happened to it... can't have people know _certain tales_ now would we?
I wonder if the brother and sister are connected to Freyr and Freya
What if you can make up videos about dragons 🐉?
