    I run a 1x8 on a budget hardtail too, the narrow-wide chainring works fine for chain retention, I've yet to have a drop. I'd try it out before I spent extra money on a guide if your budget is super tight, or just loop a couple zip ties, ha.

      I bodged a chainguide for free by using my front derailleur removing cables etc and using the limit screws to stop it moving but staying in the same place. Works perfectly and was free

    Wow. Finally someone else riding a Cannondale trail 5 29er. It’s a great frame but that suntour fork was cast out of liquid garbage. Having replaced most everything on my bike, if you’re going to be going 1x then just get a shimano slx 1x10. You’ll get a good range and it will be a cheap and easy conversion. Would also recommend a brand x externally routed dropper. Especially if you’re going 1x and freeing up that cockpit space. Hope you find this comment.

    You can also make a front upper chain guide by using the front mech and winding the limit screws in to get it over the single ring. If the screws dont move it over enough you can use a bit of old inner cable to pull it over.

    I have “vintage” 1997 Trek 800 with 26in wheels. I just found out that I might be able to fit a 27 and a half. Can I? Should I? Is it a bad idea?
    Additionally, to make it happen, I’ll need to covert v-brakes to disk including a converter for it in the rear brakes.

    #askGMBNTech I have a 12x142mm rear Onyx hub and considering a frame swap to a bike with a boost hub spacing, I've looked at boost spacer kits and redishing my wheel and all seems well so far, but what about the derailleur? If I used the oem hanger and just indexed it to ride a little more to the center would my shifting be the same? Or should I try and put both spacers on the brake side then buy a 3mm chainring? Thanks.

    I have a question and I know I’m two years late
    I want to put a free hub on my trek marlin 7 because I don’t like how quiet it is I don’t know if this is smart or if it’s even possible but it would be helpful to know how I can do it

    • @tateerickson5820
      @tateerickson5820 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a couple of choices.
      1. Disassemble the freehub and put it back together using oil or less grease on the pawls (will make it louder).
      2. Try to find a new freehub. It will be difficult to find a compatible one because the mounting isn’t standardized.
      3. Purchase a new hub (Hope will probably be the loudest out there) and re-lace the wheel with different spokes too. This can get quite pricy, so I would not recommend going through with it just for the sound.
      Hope this helps.

    #askGMBNTech Hi Doddy, I am currently using a two pot Shimano Deore M615 disc brakes and I am ready to upgrade to a four pot system. I am interested with the new Shimano XT M8020 four pot disc brakes. Found out that the new 4 pot XT uses the same 2 pot XT lever, so if you just upgrade the caliper to the 4 pot you would get the same performance as a new set. My question is can I do this with my Deore M615! Can I use my Deore M615 lever and upgrade the caliper to the XT M8020 4 pot and get the same performance? Thanks.

I want to add an extender for less hike a bikes in the mountains(Pisgah is nearby) Sram claims these are not compatible, but the shop mechanic a few friends claim that single cogs and and extended cassettes do work , and they work good. When I contacted Sram, they said I should go to eagle nx if I want a larger range. But $380 is a lot compared to $50-100 for a cog or cassette , and works good in my budget. Why does Sram not want me to use these?

      Not the dropper, but your knees. Seriously, don't bend your knees more than you have to - that's why droppers are so cool - you can adjust to the conditions. The dropper will be fine. Really. :)

    #askgmbntech Hello Doddy. Is it worth to upgrade aluminium handlebar and seatpost to carbon on a XC hardtail bike? Worry about durability during riding in the mountains.

    • @michaelstewart9308
      @michaelstewart9308 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will be strong enough but consider spending the money on something that will have a greater difference on performance, such as upgrade to tubeless, nicer wheels, better brakes, better saddle, grips and pedals. There's a lot of things I'd upgrade before dropping a few grams by getting carbon parts. If you've already done all the important upgrades then there's no problem going to carbon bars and seatpost

    #askgmbntech Hi Doddy, I run conti baron tires. They've been on my bike approx. one year, the tires are the black chilli compound. Still lots of tread on them, but the tires feel less "tacky" on the trails. Is this normal? Or is it just the reduced grip due to tire wear? Thanks!

      If your bottom bracket isn't SUPER low than yes. But if you have rear suspension and it goes pretty far in its travell maybe it can hit the bottom bracket shell when landing.

    • @lenahygiena
      @lenahygiena 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by "stell doules" but you can use a crankset when its compatible with your bottom bracket. There are several types of those, like square taper, octalink, and uhh other shimano stuff)) if its vintage its probably square taper and you can chose any crankset that matches. Otherwise, proceed to replace bottom bracket too :)

      Yes. You could also run different tyres front and back to help correct the head angle back to the correct postion, something with big grippy knobs on the back and something with shallower knobs on the front.
      You could also run more PSI in the rear and less in the front to get the geometry near to how the bike should be when using the 100mm forks.

      Suntour has an upgrade program where you can get ~$100 bucks off of a new fork, you just need to give them the serial number of your bike and your fork. I upgraded mine to the Raidon, you just have to decide what to get and how much you want to put into a new fork (I ended up getting a trail bike about 8 months later so I guess it was a good decision, but if you are going to keep the bike a while it might make sense to get the next level up). I know the Raidon 100mm I have can go up to 120mm. www.srsuntour.com/pages/upgrade

    #askGMBNTech Hey Doddy, I'm a weight lifter who likes to use mountain biking on cross country trails for cardio. I need a pretty robust bike but I'm on a budget, so I opted for a fully rigid fat bike with a Bluto-compatible frame for upgrading later. So far this has worked out really well. Although I'll never be an XC racer I've been having a blast climbing; the rigid frame and fat tires make good use of my strength. Descents are a different story. The rigid fork dishes out a beating and with the steep head angle (69 degrees) that has me walking some sections I used to ride.
    So I'm thinking about that fork upgrade, but I've heard the Bluto fork is a bit flexy. Is there a better choice for someone my size (I weigh 18 stone)? Weight is no object; my new bike is four kilos heavier than my old one, and I don't really notice it.

    #AskGMBN Hi Doddy, I have put this question in to askGMBN a couple of times but no luck! Would you be able to explain how the freestroke nuts (as opposed to the reach bolts) on Shimano XT brake levers work? I find that as the pads wear out, the lever stroke gets excessive. Some people suggest on forums to bleed the brakes with the freestroke nut wound out, and then as the pads wear, wind it in to reduce the throw. But all the Shimano bleed documentation states that the brakes must be bled with this screw wound in. Could you explain? Thanks!

    Square Taper especially Shimano UN55 is defo not a downgrade especially when considering wear and longevity. Hollowtech 2 is ok but remember these were designed for Pro racing and those boys are not so much caring for long lasting parts hense why everything race is weight focused and not wear and tear. A UN55 will long out live generally Hollowtech 2 and take probably more of a battering even if the squeek freeks don't agree! I surfed and seeing a pro surfers board would tell the same story and would only be good for a season. Hope you have a fat wallet mate!
