  • Oyster have long set the standard for luxurious blue-water cruisers, and the Oyster 495 is the new baby in the range. Even if you’re not in the market for one, it’s nice to dream, says Sam Fortescue

I think a Kraken 50 would be a better option.
Oyster are going with unprotected dual spade rudders and their keels are not integral.

If I had the money, I would have one of these SY made exactly like this one. The color of the haul and the sails are absolutely beautiful

So much light and volume in this blue water masterpiece! Everything perfect, but for three easy to correct flaws I could point: the owner's berth could be wider (queen), and the hull windows could be bigger (another set of three verticals, maybe?). Also a separate shower stool is a must for this size and ticket. Well done, Oyster!

Every sailboat review states it’s an easy to sail sailboat. I actually would like to know what sailboats are hard to handle and can’t be single handed, 50’ and below in size.

basically anything with 2 masts would not be single handed sailing

As an older Contessa sailor, me and the yacht, I dream about a boat like this. Sadly it will always be beyond my budget and most sailors, but it is nice to dream. If not we would all sail french mass produced 80's yachts with Renault 4's on the davits.😀😀

Don’t worry Ian your Contessa is a true proven blue water yacht. Is it the 32?

What about that transom though, doesn't that make the boat uncomfortable?

Not sure this is a blue water cruiser though as per description. Those huge wide decks and saloon with not much to hold on. Very high and exposed helm position, not very comfy. Lovely for easy summer cruising I guess if you like Ikea. All a bit irrelevant for me cos I couldn't afford the tender for it! But for me something like a Morris or Spirit is much nicer.

She looks beautiful but she's got an up stream battle with Amel and Halberg rassy. She's been priced to draw potential buyers from Amel & H.R. 12 steps to navigate on a long passage could be the deciding factor. I'm looking forward to seeing her in all her glory in the future.

You would pay the same premium for all the top builders, Hallberg, Swan ect. A French volumn production yacht would be much cheaper. I can afford neither but if I could I would go for the top.

would love to see someone do a review in foul weather. AP on and huddled under the spray hood exposing the helm positions as completely unsuitable for a Bluewater cruising boat. But of course the market for this boat don't sail in those conditions. They hire a delivery crew and fly out to Barbados for their holiday.

boat unrelated question: if that was the Danish summer, why does this get published in February?!?

    • @YachtingMonthly
      @YachtingMonthly  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, as much of our boat testing takes place in Europe, typically there is a glut of tests in the summer months and far fewer in the winter. So we typically have more tests than we can handle in the summer and these will be rolled out in the leaner winter months.

"Oyster set out to create a (yacht) that is easy to sail as a couple".
So, nothing new or original, got it.
Is it just me or are sailboat manufacturers literally just repeating the same marketing spiels every few years? Seeing something actually new or innovative beyond the level of "we moved the light switches three centimeters for increased convenience" seems rare
