In my science fiction novel, the aliens are arboreal and brachiating (i.e., they swing through the branches like chimps), which dictated their fashions. They don't weave or dye textiles, they grow fabrics and ornaments, taking full advantage of the brilliant colors, iridescence, and textures of the plants in their jungle home. Bare arms are a necessity, but both genders wear elaborate bangles and tied-on practical small pouches on their arms that are frequently also decorative. Practical belted purses and packs underneath their flowing robes and complicated decoratively embroidered slits for accessing one's belongings are frequent features. They are marsupial and young mothers wear specialised mother robes with sturdy reinforced openings to allow their joeys a view of the world. So my fictional styles sprang from practical necessity and I elaborated from there - i.e., I followed the path that human fashion always follows.

This video really got my creative juices flowing. It inspired me to create a whole new character for a future project (one that's in very early stages). An elderly lady, a mentor who helps my main character navigate life in the royal court. I now have a whole plan for her dress, how it stirs up gossip in the court, and how it represents her whole approach to navigating power among the nobility, and how it ties into the themes of the story. Thank you!

Oh wow, that's awesome & intriguing! This is the whole reason I make niche videos, I swear, just for stories like this.

Normally I try to pinpoint what moment or idea exactly that I loved the most about a video, but I was pretty much thrilled the entire way through, so I’ll pinpoint that!

Hey, may I make I suggestion? Something that has aided me greatly? I read tons of poetry, but whenever I feel like I'm at low tide, I will read go through poetry, backwards, line by line, and make a list of the words that jump out at me. (I divide a page into three columns.) I don't have to do this for long when reaction, almost chemical, starts to take place in my conscious mind, as associations start forming, and suddenly I'm flooded with all kinds of imagery (stimulated by the words) start to surface from my unconscious. I've also used a sketchbook when I'm trying to see a scene from another angle, to get the juices flowing. Thanks for sharing your creative process.

I'd say this is a rather technical video, but it's still great content.

As a Chinese adoptee, one of my favorite things to do with fantasy fashion is to blend western and eastern styles. I've been working on a Slavic Indian blend recently! So I love what you're doing here. Excited to see your books when they're ready ❤❤❤

Ooh I'm DEFINITELY gonna check out your channel. Just taking a peek at it makes me think you are my people!! And Slavic Indian sounds like SUCH a fantastic blend!
I do have some books out already! Any of these is a fine starting point. The Broken Queen is more epic romantasy, The Sorcerer's Concubine is a little more coming of age & the story of a marriage rather than just a romance, and Doll Girl Meets Dead Guy is more cozy & light & standalone.

I've always been fascinated by fashion and used to raid my relatives' wardrobes for old/vintage clothes, especially as a teenager when being quirky and different was so important! Also because I was poor and couldn't afford to by new clothing or follow trends (of a far lower quality!).
I'd just passed on my mum's jumper to my 12 year old. My mum bought it in the 70s, and I wore it throughout the 90's and early 2000. After all that use, it's still in the impeccable condition.
Yet when it comes to my writing, I'm not really sure about what clothes my characters should wear. Maybe because I'm not that good at description, without bogging down the story?
But after watching this, I want to have a bit more fun with fashion in my worlds 😊

Fashion can definitely be trickier to describe in a book without bogging it down. I try to focus mainly on the intersections of fashion and culture & personality, so not just a list of what someone was wearing, but say, characters commenting on someone else's clothing choice, or a character reacting to a new outfit and how they think they will be perceived in it.

As soon as I saw this I clicked because fashion is one of my favorite parts of worldbuilding! It was fun to see you sketch out the fashions from your world after reading the descriptions in the Sorcerer's Concubine series (I just finished the third one 😊) and enjoying them there.
My current fantasy world is technologically nearly identical to modern Earth and its clothing is mostly identical as well, aside from where I've decided to invent specific trends and historical/traditional styles and periods. There's one where symbolic embroidery that sent secret messages to political friends/foes was popular, for example. Also, the country it takes place in has no social concept of gender, so everyone wears whatever type of clothes they want without it being gendered. Not surprising then that I liked your bits about changing things up with the eyeliner and earrings!

In one of my projects, noble families have a wedding dress that will be used, generation after generation, with each bride adding something. The custom has fallen out of favor among nobles living in or near the capitol, but my MC has grown up in a small keep in the middle of nowhere and is heartily resisting her mother's insistence that they either import a seamstress and a bunch of fancy fabrics, or worse still, go to the capitol to have one made.
