Just wanted to say, Matt, that I'm really enjoying these One Take videos where you solicit people from the internet and drive their cars. Not a lot of people would do this sort of thing for their fans, and I think it's really cool that you find time in your day to do this.

TheSmokingTire Matt: I've seen the few videos of bikes you did a while back, they were better than the videos made by some of the print journalists who eat sleep and beathe bikes, but can't present for toffee (take a look at MCN videos as an example) I enjoyed Rideapart, but it got canned, jamie could ride, and present. There is a gap in the market for decent bike videos, of a decent length with good production and presentation values (Evo Car v Bike are good, but they are a car mag, so don't do many) A good presenter, who is merely a competent rider, will still make a better video to watch, than a "pro" who just gives us a 3 min video of engine noise, and cornering angles, with a poor voice over (if any). Jay Leno's bike video's are a perfect example of a casual rider who can present, and always worth watching
Personal is Nardi's more performance line of steering wheels for sports cars applications. Personal was a big Formula 1 steering wheel supplier for quite a long time.
I get so frustrated when people go on about how slow the Miata is. I have a 1.6 NA and I don't think I have ever needed to floor it. My '68 Commer camper van was slow, my MG midget was slow, my Frog eye Sprite was slow. My Miata is not what I call slow. You have roughly the same performance as an '80s hot hatch with waaaay better handling, and rear wheel drive. So the MX5 is not slow, just not as fast as some other sports cars. Am prepared for you all to disagree.
I don't get it either. So many OBSESS over power. They can't enjoy cars for what they are, because they never have enough power for them.... the first thing they do when they get a new car is plan how to get MORE power from it. It's like a sickness. They want to do 500 mph in a straight line - no shifting, no steering. And if your car can't do that... it sucks. I don't understand them, or agree with them.
I think many just have a very simple idea of what speed is - straight line, in addition to being consumed by the more is better mentally. The Miata of course is about less being more, so you have to understand that concept first of all. But it’s capable of maintaining great speed in the corners, highway passing in fifth gear, and exceeding all speed limits in North America without flooring it, I’d say it’s plenty fast.
I love my 1st gen Miata! A bit of suspension work, lightened flywheel, true roll bar, and a CF hood. For me it's the weapon of choice on the tight twisty lake roads we have around here. Only you've gotta keep in mind that it's a car that shines in an environment of tight twisty near goat path style roads. When it comes to open road or interstate it's lost it's luster. Then again that's why I have my Vettes.
MouseRat, I just inherited a 94 Miata. At 6'1", I wasn't sure if I'd fit, but I'm pleased to announce that I do, with almost 2 inches of head room to spare. If you have longer legs, I'd suggest finding a friend with one to see how you fit, but I don't see any major issues for you at 6'.
Patrick A there are some widely documented "Tall Mods" for the NA that involve removing a portion of the lower half of the seat. As you'll see on Thursday when I post the NA film, they work.
TheSmokingTire Seems like they're a fair bit more spacious than I thought! Seems like there's quite a few 'tall mods' for the NA (shorter dead pedals, smaller steering wheels etc). Thanks.
TheSmokingTire On top of this, revmoving the armrests(why are they even there?) and putting in straps, and putting in a smaller steering wheel made a huge difference for me.
TheSmokingTire Can't wait to see that mod and hope it is possible with my 2005 MSM NB model. I'm a skinny 6'2" guy and my head touches the ceiling. Occasionally my head hits one of those metal support bars for the soft top.
Ne1ld0 why wait for anything? Just google NB Miata Tall person mods. I have an NA but they are basically the same. I took foam out of the seat(google miata foamectomy) I put in a smaller steering wheel, and took out the armrests. Im 6'2 as well, My Miata has plenty of space
Determining whether a Miata has enough power is all about what roads you like to drive on. A Miata's stock power is really made for tight hairpin mountains. I took my near stock (68bhp @ 1700lbs curb) Triumph Spitfire to Deals Gap, and found that the car that takes 13 seconds to hit 60 had MORE than enough power for that road. Being followed by my brother in his much faster car, I felt like I could leave him for dust simply from cornering speeds. It felt like the perfect car for that road. Put my Spit on Angeles Crest though, it would feel incredibly sluggish.
Thank you for doing this video Matt. I have a similar setup in my 1999 miata. Like you said, it's all about keeping the speed in the corners in a miata. It's hard for me to pass cars at my local track, but trying to fing the best line for a corner, to brake as late as possible and trying to keep the speed as high as possible just to be able to pass a car makes the entire process more rewarding when it's succesfull.
4-5k is the number you're looking for if you want a decent Miata in California. This will get you something completely unmolested, with around 70k miles.
Jason Hochman Shit cupholders; those things get in the way of shifting; and speed is relative. Imho, my 10ae feels “decent” for everyday spirited driving.
Cars really don't need much power to be fun to drive IMO . sure the 500 HP mustangs and what not are thrilling but pushing a car to its limits on a public road and having fun is a lot better. I'm trying to decide whether or not to but a fiat abarth or a Mazda miata as a secondary car to have fun with .
UnrelatedNonsense There's a difference between "don't need much" and "don't have any." Of course, it depends where you drive, but here in CA, where the canyons have some pretty serious elevation changes, I would personally require at least 200 HP in my own car. This NB, as well as the NA I'm posting on Thursday, are really quite slow, even by modern slow car standards.
That road is perfect for the Miata. Mine is a 97 and right now it's the daily with no upgrades, but I'd love to do similar modifications to the one in the video and take it on a mountain road.
gregory549 It's important to find a balance between cars you'll never drive, and therefore want to learn about, and cars you can drive, to see if my experience compares to yours.
I bought this specific car back In November 2016 from a Chinese guy. He used this video on his Craigslist ad. It had 77k miles. Nowadays, it’s at 140k miles. The interior still looks great. I do drive it a lot, or used to, so the seat does have a couple of rips. I haven’t really done anything to it power wise. I have only added a roll bar, no more shakes at 70mph, and a sports suspension, oh yes, and a new transmission.
Definetly keep these One Takes coming, Matt ! I thouroughly enjoy them and it's a nice insight in what people actually drive, and it's already given me a few ideas for the near future :-)
NB Miatas are TINY. I valeted one and as a big dude (6'3, 260) I could hardly close the door without it completely crushing my left leg AND it was manual, so it was difficult to say the least. I have to say however the manual was one of the most satisfying, they feel like Audi/BMW shifters, which was really surprising.
Dang man, 10 grand? I picked up my '99 for $2600 and it came with the harddog rollbar already installed. It has 190k miles tho :P Still, the thing runs like a champ!
keep up the awesome videos! the fan car one takes are a great idea. As for the video, maybe it's just me but it looked like you were moving pretty good
I went to Angeles crest today in my 99 miata for the first time. It was so thrilling a little scary if your new and the sun sets. Driving in the dark in the canyons is supper terrifying. You can't tell what's coming up in the next turn at night. I kinda got lost in the dark with no gps or cellular service lol. But I have to say my car held well on stock suspension except for bilstein shocks.
Low power is great because you can use 90% of the power while not getting in too much trouble. I know that because of the fact that the most powerful car I have ever owned is my E36 318i with the M40, that has 113 crank HP.
Miatas of this generation would be near perfect if they could naturally put down in the neighborhood of 200hp at the wheels. I'm talking NA here, as I personally do not like turbocharged cars for the track. You may not even need to touch the bottom end, as a port job on the head paired with mild cams and ITBs along with supporting exhaust and fuel upgrades would bring you close to that after some tuning. I just wish the general public didn't have so much hate towards male Miata drivers, and because I somewhat care what people think it is preventing me from buying one lol.
I can tell you the hate is real. I had an 04 MazdaSpeed Miata, which was not a slow car by any means. But I would be out, minding my business and almost every time some 'bro' in a big Jeep or lifted mall crawler would start yelling out gay slurs. Absolutely blew my mind. Something about a guy NOT in a big truck offended their 'masculinity'. But it was always the same type of people that yelled that crap. On the flip side you do get a lot of thumbs up from the true car people. Just have to take the good with the bad.
I drive a 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 and trust me the general public only hates me for spooling up the turbo and blowing it all over their faces! On a curvy road or stop light to stop light, not many cars on the road can touch me. Power to weight.
Ne1ld0 Haha that's awesome, is stock? I bet there are some areas that could use improving, although Mazda does a pretty good job engineering their setups.
Random12231 lol you gotta laugh at guys with super low self esteem, a lot of it has to do with the fact that they have a tiny dick. Same dudes who wear 'Affliction' t-shirts with tribal tattoos and pump steroids into their ass cheeks. It's a sad world we live in.....but there are places like Japan and hell even here in Canada, where people don't give a FUUUUU.
miata has the drivetrain right(RWD) honda has the engine right(k20 vtec ) Now imagine a miata with a k series motor with rwd. I think the universe would cry in perfection.
Love these videos Matt. They give is insight in to builds that normal folks like us can actually afford. Would love to see you drive a circa 2006 range rover sport. It was sorta the original "Super SUV" and has become very affordable on the used market
Thomas Pendergrass you probably wouldn't like what I have to say about it, and if we're talking "super SUV" in terms of speed, the Cayenne Turbo had it beat by a mile.
Sarah Dell Pile of junk? how so? repair cost? I've heard very mixed reports on how bad the reliability/cost is on those things. Any high performance car will need more attention than a civic.
It's probably cost half the purchase price in repairs, granted most were under warranty. My fourth RR, all have issues, also had one Disco that shockingly was reliable but I sold it with under 25k miles years and years back.
Great little car!! I've always wanted to get one of these to use as a weekend canyon carver; I'm also in SoCal, so it would be perfect. Also something Matt forgot to mention is that $8,000 might get you the cleanest Miata ever, but $1,000 will get you a rust-free SoCal car with everything working but the engine... which gives you the opportunity to do any one of a myriad of engine swaps. LS3, JDM MX5 engine, 1UZ, the list goes on and on. And all of those swaps solve the issue with power in spectacular fashion. Matt, I believe you even drove a 1UZ Miata on Drive at one point; do you see that as a worthwhile car to build, for the price??
AcDc109 we were planning to shoot in October, but then Microsoft/Forza Motorsport offered to pick up the tab for ACGTH2, so we're waiting until May to film. Since we have a production budget this time, it should be out in the fall. We've already started production on ACGTH3: The Million Mile Lexus.
TheSmokingTire Awesome man! Thanks for the reply! Im glad im going to see more of the lexus you posted on Instagram. Cheers all the way from argentina!
I wasn't flat lining in my 99 miata btw but I think that has to do with the six speed gear box that I have I was always in 4 and 5 around 2500 to 4500 rpm. I never touched six unless I was in a straightaway. I'm not trying to defend the power band of the miata but I just wanted to share my thrilling experience
I’m 6 years late so I hope you figured it out on your own but I’m gonna answer anyway lol it depends more on your frame rather than your height, I’m 6’1 but I fit quite snug since I’m pretty skinny & my shoulder aren’t so broad, but anything above 6’ 3 & wide would probably struggle
I hate the seating position in the NB. I purchased an 08 PRHT GT Miata new. I REALLY enjoyed driving that car. It was one of the most entertaining cars I ever drove. The soft, body roll educing suspension was one of the things that added character to the little roadster. The steering would get light on accel and the roll of the chassis made taking turns at normal speeds a blast. I would love to get back in an NC but the market price is still high for them. The ND is on my radar.
The '06 - '08 NC was ugly and the suspension was too soft. The only thing I liked about it is the 2 extra inches of length you get for leg room. I bought a rare 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 because it was set up decent from the factory with Bilstein shocks and springs, front and rear sway bars, shock tower bar, 17" Racing Hart rims, limited slip diff, and best of all a turbocharger with 8.5 PSI.
I am not sure if i am the only one, but this video(along with quite a few others) will not buffer hd. I just watched the NA video in 1080, and went to go back to try watching this again, and it will only buffer in 360, nothing higher.
I'm 6"4 and drive a miata NA :p Not even tall man mods except some foam cut out.. Downside is I can't heel to toe because my steering wheel is between my knees. Also my knee cracked my tombstone. Other than that it's pretty practical.
I have a stock 944 I'd love for you to drive, but sadly I'm in Missouri. A 944 (NA) has a very similar power:weight ratio as a miata with ~160hp and 2700 pounds. I love ringing out the engine to access any power at all.
No, the had both a coupe and sedan. Anywho, GM parts direct sells the kit, 600 bucks and GM claims 348 tq and 280 hp. Super cheap power, check it out, it transforms the car :)
dang too bad not in TN id let u drive my 77 chevy nova, you'd be surprised how well it handles with stiff springs, good shocks, and wheels/tires... very little body roll
There are people who would roll a car 8 times and wind up upside down in a gutter aside the road... and they'd still be bitching that the car doesn't have enough power. If your first thought, if the first word out of your mouth is power... IMHO you are not really interested in cars.
Awww, no headlights that do the thing.

It's a sad world we live in.....but there are places like Japan and hell even here in Canada, where people don't give a FUUUUU.
miata has the drivetrain right(RWD)
honda has the engine right(k20 vtec )
Now imagine a miata with a k series motor with rwd.
Massive pile of junk, have one in my driveway I would glady sell you
Sarah Dell Pile of junk? how so? repair cost?
TurboLag23 The 1UZ was awesome, but for the same money, I'd probably go LS/T56.
TheSmokingTire Not to mention there's Kmiatas in the world now.
When will we see the next all cars go to heaven? I just loved it.
Thanks for the Wisco shoutout!
why did he spend the entire review bashing the car in the owner's face?
This is a great idea! Cheers Matt
Nardi Personal are legendary. Great choice!
LOL matt looks so funny in that tiny little thing!
Matt.... mention the fiesta all you want..... im counting the days till i get mine!
LOVE THESE EPISODES!
Funniest one take yet. So many good one liners.
I bought my '93 NA with 138k miles and VLSD for $1,350. These cars are all over the place, just be patient and you'll find a deal.
More of these vids! Awesome!
momentum is not only a lot of fun its the best way to learn how to drive like a pro.
Damn, shot down that flying to Wisconsin idea...
What's that tallest you can be to fit comfortably in one of these? I'm dead on 6 foot and I recon I'd struggle
I bought a rare 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 because it was set up decent from the factory with Bilstein shocks and springs, front and rear sway bars, shock tower bar, 17" Racing Hart rims, limited slip diff, and best of all a turbocharger with 8.5 PSI.
i do like the NC more too. looking forward to the reviews on the ND
The '06 - '08 NC looked like shit. The 2004 or 2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 (NB) is still the best version Mazda has ever made.
I heard from a bird that miatas are the best.
Wish you could come to WI to drive my cobra lol. Are you doing the hot rod Power tour?
you should do a walk around of each car at some point
i wish we had a road like this in belgium.
btw i love miata's
I am not sure if i am the only one, but this video(along with quite a few others) will not buffer hd. I just watched the NA video in 1080, and went to go back to try watching this again, and it will only buffer in 360, nothing higher.
I'm 6"4 and drive a miata NA :p Not even tall man mods except some foam cut out..
Downside is I can't heel to toe because my steering wheel is between my knees. Also my knee cracked my tombstone. Other than that it's pretty practical.
Somehow someway you need to get your hands on the roadkill corvette kart ! Trust me that thing we own the snake when its done !
I have a stock 944 I'd love for you to drive, but sadly I'm in Missouri. A 944 (NA) has a very similar power:weight ratio as a miata with ~160hp and 2700 pounds. I love ringing out the engine to access any power at all.
Ahh, I was waiting for that ST comparison. 😂😂😂
It's getting a little toasty in this B.
Too bad I'm not in LA, I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS Turbo and that thing is a beast!
I have the exact car, in sedan form. You have the "GM stage 2"?
MrsGondee Mine is stock, but didn't the turbo version only come in Coupe model?
No, the had both a coupe and sedan. Anywho, GM parts direct sells the kit, 600 bucks and GM claims 348 tq and 280 hp. Super cheap power, check it out, it transforms the car :)
Wow, Matt fits in a Miata... cool. :)
Hey Matt you guys should try to test drive a Honda s2000! Preferably an ap1 9k redline, but any s2000 like ap1, ap2, or cr sounds good to me! :D
These are great!
At the start of the video is that the area where they filmed fast and furious 7?
No comments yet about Matt excited for the D? Strange.
It's a lot more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow.
Come to Rhode Island and drive my SVT Focus!
If you are ever in Alabama Matt I will lend you my 2004 Mazdaspeed for a day if you'd like that.
Hopefully pick up my little mx5 soon. Compared to the 400bhp focus rs I drive already it will be slow but coming from an e92 m3 I miss the rwd
dang too bad not in TN id let u drive my 77 chevy nova, you'd be surprised how well it handles with stiff springs, good shocks, and wheels/tires... very little body roll
Matt, how hard are you driving in these roads on the One Take series? 7/10s or 5/10s maybe?
Hey Matt I have 2012 wrx stage 1 near LA. Is that something you guys would want to shoot?
Such a beautiful day and you have the top up ?
i love these videos
i see alot of comments bout ppl bein 6'0+ nd worryin bout fittin. a del sol looks so small but with an s2k seat, someone easily 6'2, 220lbs can fit
1:25 that joke went right over matts head lol
you should do some rotary cars soon
Nice little car. When are we going to see that black 5.0?
GT7786 a few weeks. It's not flat black though, just normal black.
There are people who would roll a car 8 times and wind up upside down in a gutter aside the road... and they'd still be bitching that the car doesn't have enough power. If your first thought, if the first word out of your mouth is power... IMHO you are not really interested in cars.
I have a stock fiesta st, want to do the review?
TheSmokingTire I had a 5.0 on pre order but one thing led to another and sadly couldn't get it.
back when we shook hands because no corona viris
im from cali can anyone tell me where this mountain range is at exactly??
More Miatas - Plz
