The shot of them coming out of the barbers shop Alex's was in Leeds at the top of Water Lane. It is now demolished & replaced by the tall building nicknamed The Dalek.
The difference is technoly & production. Prince Buster, is definitely slower, but is aimed at a different generation. Madness layered sounds, & faster tempo. Growing up with Madness they will get my vote, but Prince Buster, deserves credit for being one of the original sounds of Jamaica.
Unfair to compare the artist who built it with the artist who took it for a ride. Madness, Specials, Selecter was music of my youth & it introduced me to Jamaican Ska which I LO❤️E! 80’s Ska & 60’s Ska are both dear to my heart
I was 16 when the Madness version hit the charts in 1979. They blew me away. So different from the prevalent Punk, new wave and disco around at the time.
Taking in that Prince Buster recorded on outdated equipment compared to madness, was self producing and is a pioneer of reggae music, i must go with him. But i really love the madness version to
I really like prince buster and he is the original but for me madness is the best because I grew up hearing their version and when this comes on and me and my mates are having a good few pints it turns into a beer rain party and everyone is having it big time!
I grew up listening to 2tone but over the years I’ve delved into the original songs and 2tone influences and they both stand alone , both fantastic genres
Love Madness ! .. They took a song with a good riff and a good basic rhythm and made it into a classic piece of fun, dancey, joyful ska .. Kudos to the influential Prince Buster for his inspiration and originality, but for me Madness wins by a mile .. The video is absolutely fantastic too !
I discovered this song through Madness, and love it. But the PB version has more variations in the sax. It’s a difficult decision, but the little bit more fun in the Madness version makes me go for Madness
It's either this song, or their verison of "Madness", that actually had Prince Buster saying he did actually think the Madness version was better. As it happens, this apparently was just a short intro they did at their gigs. It was only when they went to record the album that they and the producer decided to do it as a full song.
I was one of those kids in the early 80s… My parents came from Jamaica with the original 7 inch blue beat records in their suitcases. When our English friends came round and heard these tracks been played by my dad… Completely blew their minds. The members of madness grew up in this hot bed of multiculturalism in Birmingham and this is the basis of all their music. Yes… The Madness version is fast and frenzied and quite exciting but we cannot deny the fact that Prince Buster is , As my dad always used to remind us, the perpetrator, the originator, and The instigator,
Madness were in North London... The pub in the video is the famous rock venue Hope and Anchor in Islington... Same interactions with carribean community though. The original is the original.. Kudos for that. Recording and production on the Madness version is better due to technology developments. Both are brilliant It's like Seals and Crofts "Summer Breeze" versus Isley Brothers cover... Both equally good
Its not a case of which is better, its the that they are complimentary, they are both brilliant. Madness are great fans of people like Prince Buster and his ilk and is more of a tribute than a cover.
Madness all the way for me. I still can’t understand how the U.K. Ska/Mod Revival scene didn’t make it in the commercial way in the US as it did in Europe. So many amazing bands and music. Loads of US bands and musicians found the music and were influenced by it, just never seemed to make it to the radio? Check out Madness’s version of Must Be Love, the song was originally by Labi Siffre who appears in the madness video as one of the violin players at the end, he takes off his shades and smiles at the camera. Mark Bedfords bass line on It Must Be Love is beautiful and understated but just makes the song for me.
Always Madness, if you have chance you should check out Ren and his music. his song Hi Ren is probably one of the biggest masterpieces I have ever heard also money game pt 3. Those videos are epic. He has a brilliant catalogue of his music that you can easily get lost in. He’s Welsh but recently has returned to the uk from Canada where he was having treatment. There’s also a lot of great music from the band that he played with called The big Push but has also sung with other amazing artists. He’s extremely happy for reactions and will help if any trouble comes your way if you post anything. He’s a diamond and I have noticed anyone that reacts to him gets tons of followers and when he recommends music the artist does, skinner brothers went from under 4000 to over 6000 overnight.
Madness recorded a Spanish language vocal that was used for the Spanish release of the single! Their version remains quite true to the original but personally i prefer the more organic sound of the Prince Buster version. Also worth a comparison is Prince Buster and Madness's version of Madness. The original version was aimed at Lee Perry who was another prolific producer at the time to which he retorted with a 45 called Mad Head. Rival producers/artists did this often in 60's Jamaica 😁
The original has two horns - there's the main horn with the melody and a high horn doing rhythmic ornaments. The bass, piano and guitars are all very low in the mix so only the horns, percussion and mouth noises are in the foreground. Madness only use one horn, but the have a much fuller sound from the guitars and keys. Plus they used reverb to fill out the sound. To be honest I wouldn't like to choose between them..
Prince Buster was Ska music, Madness was Reggie, as was UB40, I went from a Tamla Motown freak, to a full blown Skinhead Tonic Mohair wearing Mod, over night, Britain's music was influenced, by so many, I still love Sitar played by either Father or Daughter Shankar
The Madness version is a soundtrack to my teens and early twenties where the challenge was to dance as hard as you could for the full duration. It is was always a floor filler. Hadn’t heard the original before, nice and chilled.
As long as Prince Buster wasn’t actively abusing Scots folk on his recording then he was gonna win for me as Madness quite literally suck Donkey Balls IMHO . PB recording is 💯 authentic and hence has to be the winner 🏆 👍🏴

It was also the B side for the al copone a side which in respect should have been a a single at the time but it is what it is.

Different vibes altogether. The Madness version has more of a punk spirit to it. I like both but Prince Buster has it for me. Imagine if Prince Buster had the recording facilities that Madness had.
The Madness version is certainly a more "Fun" interpretation , the video clearly shows they're not taking themselves seriously, the choreography is designed to put a smile on the viewer's face . My dear late dad would have (did ) a silly dance to this - he was a professional musician - so I think he caught the vibe straight away . I don't think he'd have done that with the PB version .
