    This is very, very informative. But now I'm getting different messages from different top players. Some tell me that I have to get good and practice with one weapon, saying that 'Flexing' makes you not play a certain role too well since you're diluting your skills to other weapons, and now I'm seeing this which is encouraging flexing weapons to situations. Man, I just want a definitive consensus of which of these mantras to follow to git gud.

      Why not both? (I love your vids)

    • @hnglbanana
      @hnglbanana 7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      yeah, the answer kind of is both. half the battle in high level competitive play is learning how to move around and confront opponents. start by getting really good with one weapon, until you know the tricks and techniques of high level play, then branch out into other weapons to see how the same tricks and techniques apply to them. the more weapons you can apply that knowledge to, the more versatile a player you can become, until, like DUDE said in this video, you know how to be a strong and effective player in any mode/map

      I flex alot. Playing one weapon a lot makes my skills stale, plus using one tactic all the time isnt fun.
      Plus the more weopons you play you know how to deal with them and what thier taxtics are.

    • @johnw7707

      Most people learn about 2 to 5 weapons they can be really good with. That takes a lot of practice. Top players aren't just born better, the usually have more time to experiment and can pick up and maintain more weapons than people who spend less time of the game (not saying time is a linear relationship to skill, you have to work smart). A player like me mains the Tentatek Splattershot and Splattershot because they are very versatile (not mains in the way DUDE condemns by using it every time, but maining it as my default go-to weapon), but I can also use the .52 Gal, Dualies and some other weapons. I generally try to stick to meta weapons instead of finding a niche in some random weapon because we don't have a very solid meta yet in this game. This gives me a go-to weapon I can be good with, but some more flex to fit the mode, stage and my team's comp.

      Etce Being a one trick pony won't get you far but playing everything won't either. It's a fine balance you find yourself. Try asking yourself "How many weapons can I play very effectively without spending too much time learning them?" This will help you figure out how many weapons you should learn without sacrificing too many resources.

    I definitely agree with this video, however I think sometimes loyalty and pride aren't the only reasons people default to one weapon. Sometimes it's meta-illiteracy where they just don't know what does best so they use what they're best with.

    I have a couple problems with this video. I mostly agree with the notion that playing competitively can be fun, and I can relate to your frustration with scrubs who complain about the use of highly effective equipment/tactics. But I think you don't do a good job of communicating that properly or effectively.
    Case in point, you talk about "playing for fun" and "playing competitively" in a way that makes it sound like they are different, as though they have to be different. I actually find this rather condescending. "Oh, you just wanna play for fun, do whatever. You're not really here to win. But that's okay because you're *just* playing for fun." This may or may not be how you actually think, but I consider the topic easily misunderstood because of how controversial it is.
    You sound ready for a fight. During the introduction you were calm and conversational, but once you started diving into the meat of the argument you sounded like you had just come back from an angry reddit argument.
    If your goal is to persuade people to consider your idea, your message, then coming off so aggressively is counter productive because it will incite defensiveness in your audience.

  • @Lemon-hl7st
    @Lemon-hl7st 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Tbh I don't really consider the weapon you only use your main
    I like to think of the main as a weapon you can rely on
    Like a weapon your the best at, or you can use even when you don't know what weapon to use, you'll always use that one, since you know you will at least do decent at it
    Eventually you will find a weapon for that thing your confused for.
    So when I say "The Sloshing machine is my main" I'm mostly saying I'm good with it and can rely on it

    What you said really seems to make a whole ton of sense. I used to be an N-Zap main in Splat 1 and everything didn't always go the way I wanted it to until I started doing a ton of every weapon. I recently picked up the Splatling and it seems to be the best I'm at so far, but I always switch my weapon to make it work with game modes that the Splatling doesn't excel at in Splat 2

  • @D13djeej

    You have to understand that people using lesser weapons on certain maps and modes is still a good thing for accurately figuring out the current meta for every weapon. Pushing weapons to their limits instead of everyone just hogging the best weapon and ignoring everything else.

    • @cali2432
      @cali2432 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Bro rewatch the video he isn't saying that you shouldn't test lesser played weapons to see if they have their uses, he is saying that you shouldn't religiously play a weapon just cause it's your personal favorite. He is advocating being open to the possibility of unpopular weapons being meta and is encouraging people to test shit out and see if something works or not for yourself instead of relying solely on what is played most. He is discouraging maining a weapon cuz its your favorite

  • @samuelstephens6904
    @samuelstephens6904 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    "The top players actually experiment what is the most effective weapon"
    I think you are giving the pros a little too much credit. The early pre-1.3 meta was hardly "experimental." Teams were using the Tri-Slosher and stacking Ink Armor because it was a very simple, straightforward, and powerful strategy that anyone who has played a fair amount of shooters would recognize. It was most definitely an _easy_ thing to do.
    That isn't to say those who abused these things were less skillful (at least at the top of the competitive scene) or wrong to do so. Don't hate the player, hate the game and all that jazz. But I won't give them credit for it either. Someone who was truly interested in exploring the scope of the meta would not flock to the most obvious weapons so early.
    I agree with some of your points. If you are, literally, sticking to your guns and using personal favorites over what is "meta," then you should expect a more difficult path and shouldn't complain about those who do not. Branching out a bit, even if it's just in more casual settings, will make you a better player.
    But using off-meta weapons in a competitive setting is also fine. I'm not sure why you come off as ranting here in a video that is supposed to be advice, but it sounds like you are frustrated with how players using more "defensive" (i.e. slower) weapons are complicating your neat aggressive meta. That's why people like to use those weapons despite their difficulty. It throws a wrench into the works and punishes those who rely too much on the common wisdom of what is "meta." Some people don't want to just win. They want to win in style. It's an added layer of challenge. And that's why we play competitive games, no?

      This. Take Smash Bros. as an example. I _could_ main Sheik, or Mario, or ZSS, but I don't. I don't just want to win, I want to surprise my opponents and "disrespect" them, and win with style, which is why I main King 3D. The same applies in Splatoon. I _could've_ mained pre-patch Tri-Slosher in Splatoon 2, or the H-3 Nozzlenose in Splatoon, but I didn't. I main the Hero Charger Replica. You can surprise your opponents by flicking, Splat Bombs are *great* for disrespect, and Sting Ray (after the recent buff) is just plain good. Long story short, I couldn't have phrased it any better than you.

      BlackCherry The H-3 is definitely solid to say the least. But it's not _stylish_ or _fun_ (at least for me). I now main the E-Liter mostly for flicks, sneak attacks, (no scope, so I can keep my charge under ink) and Ink Storm distance kills. It's not the best weapon, but it's fun and I can be silly with it.

      The thing that holds it back is Tenta missiles. Every other special is great except them (and maybe bubble blower). Tenta missiles are useful, but just can't compete with the buffed specials. It's the same reason jet squelcher isn't that great anymore. All the other subs and specials are a lot better, even though the sub and special are decent.

    • @__cacti5118
      @__cacti5118 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      you obviously don't know meta. ask any good player and they will say that tenta is good because it's not supposed to kill, it inks turf that you couldn't possibly reach, it tells you your opponents positions and it provides pressure which can allow for pushing by forcing people into certain positions with the missiles. so yeah. sorry to be a jerk

    I agree with many of the things that you say, but not all. I'm training to be competitive for this game and I play Smash Bros competitive, and what you say happens in any competitive game. I don't have a main, but there are certain weapons I feel a connection to, and I want to use it. For you, it's all about winning mostly, and that's fine, but for others, it's not just about winning, it's about winning with the weapons you love. In Smash when I kick ass with Ganondorf, and use tech, people go "Woah, look at this guy, he's kicking ass with Ganondorf!!". It fills me with pride, and that pride is part of the reason I keep having fun and playing competitively, but what you say is true. I also play other characters in case I need them.
    I love the Dynamo Roller and I'll keep using it because I learned it well enough to do great with it, but I won't bring it to Moray Towers, so I agree, if you want to win maining is bad, but then again, it's not just about winning, it's about having fun for many, and certain weapons are what give the player the most fun, pride included. I think people that play competitive should balance as you call it "pride and loyalty" with your way of seeing it.

    I have to agree that being a meta slave is probably the most reliable way to ensure success. However, meta changes all the time (not necessarily due to new patches), and sometimes it's due to people being creative and finding new ways of abusing certain weapons.

    versatility is the name of the game. i actually struggled to get into splatoon at first because i was pretty much new to shooters and i couldn't keep up, even in turf. then i discovered the brush class of weapons, and the inkbrush nouveau became my first 'main', so to speak. it gave me the confidence i needed and i started to climb the rungs of ranked. as i picked up the tricks and strategies of high level play, i discovered that inkbrushes were fairly limited in their use (i now only use them on certain splat zones rotations), so in order to become a better player, i branched out, adding blasters and splatlings to my repertoire. i increased my versatility
    now, in splatoon 2, i'm trying to become more effective with even more weapons. after reaching s+ in splatoon 1, i had the confidence to try out shooters and chargers, and discovered that i actually wasn't as bad with them as i thought. all thanks to the knowledge i gained of higher level play. now i'm at least 'decent' with the majority of weapons, and could fill a variety of roles on a team. it's all about versatility

  • @nunoosorio3832

    Lemme brag a little.
    I don't have a Switch yet, but I still train in Splatoon 1.
    I enjoy honing my aiming skills with chargers, but I often use Rollers and Splatlings, because I'd rather use a Splat Roller in Splatoon 1's Kelp Dome, and I love how Splatlings mix the power and range of Chargers with the fire of Shooters, (even though I recognize that Splatoon 1's meta got overrun with Tentateks, Lunas, Carbons and few other weapons, that's why Nintendo should keep the weapons as ballanced as possible).
    I never went full competitive, but I wouldn't mind grabbing a Carbon or a Tri-Slosher in Splatoon 2 if I was part of a competitive team.

    I've only just now gotten around to this video and honestly...
    I agree with you 110% This doesn't just apply to Splatoon though, I can apply this to everyone game but i'll stay on topic.
    You are only limiting yourself with your self-imposed rules about how you play, i.e. "I don't use to use the Octobrush, it's too easy, etc etc".
    Let me tell you, Octobrush is one of my mains (my most used weapon actually) and I can tell you that when you use a weapon for a long time, you only see its flaws so I work on that and in turn, makes me a better use of said weapon. Of course, what DUDE is saying here is that you don't need to stick to 1 weapon for everything; you use *anything* to help you win and no amount of social justice or opinions from others is going to stop *you* from using anything to *win games*.
    A lot of the time, those people who complain or try to put you down for using a said weapon they don't like due to "being cheap or easy" are often worse than who they're telling off. There's no cheap or easy weapon in this game, it's the person who's putting in the work, never the weapon.
    There may be people who play this for fun but people like myself find the fun in *winning* and there's nothing wrong with winning, or am I missing the bigger picture of this entire game?

    THAAAAAANK YOU
    I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR AGES SINCE SPLATOON 2 CAME OUT
    Everything you said I completely agree with and people honestly need to start learning the different weapons and what works for them in any given scenario because that's just the meta. Adapt. People don't want to adapt though, people want their weapons to continue working for them instead of switching weapons. Why? **Because of pride**. Because they want to prove something to everyone that this particular weapon can best all others. Tell you one thing, that's gonna make you a sitting duck and I'm glad there are countless others who have the same mindset as I do when it comes to "maining": don't. Learn.

    Great Video. I got better by playing with different types. I use to stick to one but now I keep making sets for others and experiment.
    By playing other sets, you can understand strengths and weaknesses that you can use when fighting others who use it.

    For people getting into competitive (like me, I'm getting back into it....well as soon as I fix/buy a new left joycon): if you're not a casual player, you can still play this game casually with your favorite (but trash) weapon when you feel like it. Nobody plays competitively 100% of the time.

    I've actually been branching out weapon wise in 2. It was a mix of your advice (thank goodness I found your channel before the game came out as it also inspired me to finally try ranked in 1, something that... terrified me that I would be bad at but it's very fun) and that I was... once a 'Dynamo Main.' I loved how the Dynamo felt in 1... it's absolutely atrocious in 2, lmao.

  • @BotanistJeff
    @BotanistJeff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think that certain weapons can also help you develop skills which are helpful in other scenarios as well. For example, I decided to learn how to use the dynamo roller and got to the point where I was decent with it in ranked, which improved my ability to use the rainmaker because of the similar fighting style required by both weapons (what with the long wind up time and so on).

    Variety is what made the game fun for me. Early into Splatoon 1, I decided I would only play roller weapons. I got bored. I stopped playing for quite some time. Around the announcement of Splatoon 2, I started playing again. I still played rollers for the most part, but I would switch it up from time to time when I felt it getting stale. And I couldn't. Stop. Playing. Learning lots of different weapons is a core part of the game, in my opinion.

  • @Lolly74079

    I used to main a weapon in S1- the Heavy Splatling. However, I tried the Forge Pro and loved it after watching DUDE's video on it (and the maining weapon videos). Then I tried other weapons, mainly picking up the Berry, followed by the Slosher very late into S1's lifespan (up until S2 came out). I essentially switched between the lot. But now, I use several weapons- Heavy Deco, Forge Pro, Jet Squelcher, Slosher, Splash-O-Matic, Squiffer, Firefin, Enperry Dualies and Dualie Squelchers...
    It's the best thing I ever did.

  • @lunamaster123
    @lunamaster123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I feel the Tri-Sloher wasn't really broken. While it was the "best" close range weapon, there were still weapons that could fight outside its range. I believe the problem was that people didn't adapt to it well.
    While I agree with your message to not "main" a weapon, I think you sounded a little too angry. You also sounded like a strict follower of meta where "If your weapon isn't meta, then you aren't focusing on winning." I get using weapons that are effective for the situation, but there are a lot of weapons that fit the bill... and ANY weapon can be used effectively depending the player's play style. Having fun while being serious can be a thing. It's all about balance. Being flexible is good, but being comfortable is better in my opinion.

I have 52 gal, Dapple Dualies, and Sloshing machine too just have more options and I enjoy those weapons outside of my main “Class” You can still be known for a weapon and have backup options in case the meta shifts or in case the map and mode don’t benefit the weapon.

    It's always so funny when I see a Charger on the other team with 20+ splats, but then their team still loses the match. They focus way too much on splatting to the point where they just ignore the objective completely.

    • @lunamaster123
      @lunamaster123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Actually, you can kinda blame his teammates on that one. Chargers' great perk is their ability to get picks. Turfing and playing the objective isn't their strong suit. The closest you'll see a charger directly being effective on the objective is on Tower. Anything else, they should be focusing on kills.

    • @HyliaStar
      @HyliaStar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ace - I see what you mean about the bad teammates, but I have seen quite a few chargers before actively doing the objective despite them being Chargers. Either way, I just think the situation of seeing a person having many splats and still losing is funny to me.

      @pennyjpie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      So I don't main charger, but I have a lot of experience playing one since I like to learn weapons in order to learn how to beat them.
      The charger's job is to kill. From far away. Its a sniper. Its job is to keep the other team away from the objective by splatting them before they get to it. The rest of the team has to take advantage of that. If the team can't do their job, then it doesnt matter how many kills a charger gets. Am I saying a charger shouldn't get the rainmaker or get on the tower in trying times? Noo, of course not. But blaming the lose of a game on one team member, especially one that's actually doing their job, is not cool, its destructive.
      Likely those chargers you see get fed up with the team not doing their job and decides to do it for them. (I've had to do this several times, its hard as ass being a charger lol)

  • @skyguysZ
    @skyguysZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use a variety of weapons (most carried over from the the first game). I like to use the best weapon for the best mode/map.
    For instance, my favorite/best weapon is the jet squelcher since splatoon 1 day one. I simply in love with its range and overtime, it became my most turfed weapon. But as time moved on and the meta progressed, I realized that I can't use this thing solo for all the maps in that game. Then I found the n zap 85 (underrated splatoon 1 weapon but we've moved on) then the octobrush and so on. Both of these helped covered the jet's weaknesses. From these two weapons, I applyed hte fundamentals to some of the other top tier weapons in splatoon 1 such as the ttek, zimi, etc.
    That doesn't mean that my pride in my weapon choices has completely vanished. I never bought the .96 because I hated it's accuracy and I always wanted to be known as "the guy who uses this weapon and wins depsite the odds."
    Fast forward to splatoon 2, I was happy to know that many of my weapons are top tier in the current meta but I was sad that I can't use the jet as much because of the maps and cqc dominating atm

    Come splatoon 2, whenever I got frustrated playing the splatterscope, I changed to a very effective meta weapon to try and learn that.

  • @tiggerbiggo
    @tiggerbiggo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This advice is very good for people who want to be extremely competitive, but for me Splatoon is all about having fun, so I choose weapons that satisfy that urge for fun. That's all that matters to me as a casual player, if you're not enjoying the game what's the point? So play weapons that best balance effectiveness vs what you enjoy.
